What is wrong with Timo Meier?

Calm down guys, it's so swiss to have a slow start, same case for Nico

I love Timo, I guess you could say he is kind of inconsistent, but when he is feeling it, he's an unstoppable force

It seems to me like it's just a carryover from after the deadline...where it didn't feel like he ever really meshed, or had any actual chemistry with either of the Devils top-2 Centers. On paper, there were all manner of reasons to think it'd be a perfect fit. A solid, bigger, quasi power forward scoring winger sounded like exactly what the Devils were kind of lacking to play with Hughes. Or the Swiss connection with Hischier. The links were there forever and it made sense.

But in reality after the trade, it just always looked out of sync to me. Sometimes, certain players that you'd expect to mesh, never do. Chemistry is always a bit of an experiment. Doesn't always go the way you'd expect.

Sometimes really good centers like that...really just need a skilled grinder beside them. Someone who will just plug away, do the spadework, and leave the actual play driving to them. That can throw someone like Meier completely off kilter. As well as just raising questions about how good he even really is. How much was just piling up points as a focal point on a bad team? Now that he's been comparatively demoted to a more "supporting role"...that can unsettle a player and throw them off their game as well. Some guys just aren't ever able to be as useful in that capacity. Their utility falls off hard when they're not at the center of everything and playing with prime, top opportunities and license to be "the guy" on a line.

I feel like doubling down on it after that iffy initial trial run was probably a mistake. Especially at the price they're not paying him for a very long time to come. But when you go out and make that kind of big splash...it's awfully hard to walk that back and basically admit you might've goofed or misjudged.

He wasn’t a threat out there at all. He messed around with Shesty and almost died for his sins. Congrats on the contract.
So you didn’t watch the games just highlights, got it. Talking about contacts when your team handed out the Trouba, Panarin and the Trocheck contacts lmao. Enjoy your one big hit and series loss.

There’s a lot going on here, despite everyone wanting to dance on Meier’s grave, that is missing from most posts in this thread.

1. Timo is and always has been both a slow starter as well as a streaky player. He’ll explode for 8 goals in 5 games, then go scoreless for 10. It’s just how he is, it’ll even out over the course of the season.
2. Timo has always been a lazy player at times. His effort level is not great and yeah, he is prone to bad stick penalties. Something you live with for him.
3. He’s always been a player who is best with the puck on his stick, which is why he thrived the most with linemates like Hertl, Pavelski, and Couture, who are excellent off-puck and only need small touches to be effective rather than long stretches carrying the puck. There’s a reason Meier was never played with Thornton for any serious amount of time despite being that prototypical goalscorer you’d think would thrive with Thornton.
4. He’s spent his whole career up until now on a team that was built to wear you down in the offensive zone with methodical cycling, putting everything on net from the points looking for tips and rebounds. Now, he’s in a quick-strike, transition-focused team that is more creative but less oppressive than the good Sharks teams Meier was on in 2017-2019. Honestly, I thought that he would thrive with the Devils, but now I see that there’ll be a pretty significant adjustment period.

I’m certainly glad the Sharks traded him and didn’t have to sign him to that huge contract, but he’ll be just fine in NJ.

Didn't expect a reasonable, well explained post in this dumpster fire thread. Thank you good sir!

ps. I can't really take all the "told ya so" comments seriously after 3 games. Timo will be fine.

If Timo goes pointless today, this thread will be insufferable. But if he has a good game, this thread will be insufferable.

You know, now that I think about it. Maybe Timo prefers Nino Niederreiter over Nico. But then why would he -resign with the Devs, unless...he's just trying to secure the bag so that he could live his lifestyle.

+/- is a stupid stat
Meier is a stupid player.

But I agree.

I did watch the goals against though:
#1: Not at fault
#2: Cherrypicking- chilling somewhere in the NZ while his team turns it over on the breakout
#3: Inexplicably guarding the empty ice in the middle of the slot. Too bad the ice can't score, but the Islanders players can.

...and the Devils go 4 for 5 on the Power Play tonight.
Even a broken clock is right twice a day. Green has proven at multiple levels that he simply lacks the intelligence to be qualified to coach at the professional level. He's caused a ton of damage everywhere he's coached with his incompetence and lack of professionalism.
