What is wrong with Timo Meier?

He needs to play with Hughes to even create scoring chances?
His best chances last game were on the 2nd PP unit, away from Hughes. Got robbed a couple times by Comrie.

He is likely a better fit away from Hughes, I don’t think that they’ll end up together

This was an impressively premature thread. Some really historic takes in here after a couple games.

Glad he is playing better. I don’t think any of the criticism was solely about his start to this season, he didn’t look quite himself ever since the trade. Nothing premature talking about months of play.

I don't really think this is true. He was himself last year after the trade. The pucks just weren't going in. Now to start this season it wasn't just the pucks not going in but he looked bad (still wasn't concerned over a few bad games though). Playdriving wise he still has to pick it up this year. Only a 45% xGF so far

I thought he looked better in the playoffs but he did not look comfortable at all in the regular season in my opinion.

6 game point streak (8 points total) for Meier since this thread was created.
Both sides of this argument are annoying since most people are just counting his points and that's the entirety of their argument either way.

If you can't watch all of his games, I just look at how the coach uses him, and listen to the things the coach says about him, and how often he's being used in certain key situations, etc. Using those metrics, it seems like he's been playing up to his contract.

Lost in the mix of younger, superior talents around him that have also already established some chemistry together before he arrived/without him. Also potentially Timo may not see eye-to-eye with several of those other players and/or coaching staff on a personal level and it’s taken it’s toll on the ice. Who knows.

Or he’s playing injured.

Was fed lots of minutes on a horrible Sharks team and shot the puck a ton, leading to overinflated offensive numbers.

He and his agent finessed the hell out of the Devils on this deal. Somehow they watched him put up .5ppg then be invisible in the playoffs and still gave him this contract. He is a ~$4.5mil player absolute max.

I suppose if you only looked at stat lines and didn't watch any of the games, you could come away with that conclusion.

I don't think Meier will live up to his contract, but this is a ridiculous take - the guy still put up 35 & 40 goals the past two seasons, including scoring at a 35 goal pace with NJ. He's not a $4.5M player.

Playing like absolute crap now since returning from injury. Reasonable to think that the injury is still affecting his play versus him suddenly completely falling off a cliff at 27 years old, but we'll see.

6 game point streak (8 points total) for Meier since this thread was created.

After this post, Meier had 3 goals in the next 5 games and then got injured - so he had 11 points in 11 games pre-injury.

Wasn't playing amazing, but was much better than the current version. Since coming back he's pointless in 8 games. Devils need to shut him down for a while and (hopefully) let him fully heal. Doesn't seem like he's really helping the team much out there.

Could be worse. Could be Johnathan Huberdeau or Johnny Guadreau. Timo time is currently experiencing some unforseen and unfortunate delays. We are diligently working on resolving these issues.

If injury is playing a big part on this should NJ not put this guy on IR for a bit? Maybe some time off for extra rehabilitation would go a long way.

I think most NJ fans agree with this approach, but without knowing the extent of the injury I'd guess (a) it's not something he's at risk of aggravating...though you do have to wonder if it impacts his skating if that alone could lead to a different injury and (b) they must think an injured Timo is still better than whoever the replacement would be, which at this point is either Tierney (who has been godawful this season) or Brendan Smith as a 4th line forward that can also play PK as a defenseman (not needed as much with Nemec taking Hamilton's spot due to injury and being able to contribute on the PK). Personally, I'd go with Smith and let Meier rest up through the Christmas break. Again, tough to say how much that would actually do for him without knowing the extent of the injury. I do wonder if he rushed coming back a bit too as his first game back from injury was against San Jose.
