Committing long term to Rielly might be this regimes biggest mistake.

He looks like he got the bit by the big contract syndrome. Remember guys like Kubina, Beauchemin and Komisarek all struggled with living up to their contracts once they got paid. He's not a smart player and he relies too much on running around with pure athleticism. He doesn't know how to play defense.

A lower end #1 who’s elite on the breakout and an elite passer. Historically, he’s also been very good in the playoffs as well.

But he has no shot, is only sporadically physical, and if he was putting points up at his usual rate would be signed to an okay deal dollar wise but with too much term.

Even before his deal what is his value? A 1st, a 4th, a B-level prospect and a 4D or middle six forward who makes a little too much money. You’re gonna have to hit on that first or it’s a bad trade.

I love Mo, but he has always had his shortcomings and his play this year has been unacceptable.

Whatever he is we’re stuck with him.

Can someone help me remember a team that did well in teh playoffs with someone like Rielly as their 1D?

Can't shoot on the PP
Can't make smart plays/passes on PP
Telegraphs every freakin pass
Can't play body
Can't play 2 on 1
Can't clear the crease

WTF

Would you do Matthews for Eichel and Theodore if Matthews wants $14 million plus per?

The only issue with that is you're relying on fans/fanboys to objectively value one of their long time players. You're always going to overvalue what you have especially if you drafted and developed the player.
And most of the fan boys are also Dubas lovers who defend the boat anchor of a contract Dubas gave him by saying he would have got $9M somewhere else when there is zero evidence of that. I was hoping Dubas traded him before his last contract ran out because at $5M some other GM may have taken a chance on him. Now he’s worse. At best a 4-5 and overpaid by millions. Top four dman can either defend or are great offensively. He’s neither and is killing the PP. Keefe doesn’t have the balls to do what’s right and take him off the PP and give him sheltered minutes.

Yup!

Problem is Leafs can't know what Matthews wants until July 1st; after that his full NTC has already kicked in.

Firing Babcock was one of the biggest mistakes they made including handing over the keys to the franchise to a freakin' rookie

There's a big reason why the Bruins are so much better than every other team in the league...they have players who buy into the team, who aren't greedy and want to be part of the solution to winning a Cup, like Pastrnak, who has already locked himself into an 8 year contract at a discounted price of $11.25 million per...while Matthews is still counting pennies on how much he could screw over Dubas and Leafs again.

He's essentially Jake Gardiner right now, relying on physical attributes with nothing else going on upstairs. Scary thought as to what Rielly becomes once his foot speed goes.

Morgan genuinely seems like a good guy, took less than market value to remain a Leaf and all that good stuff. But even at 7.5m I was uneasy commiting to the player for another 8 years, would've been ok going in a different direction.

The problem with Rielly is that he isn't a top pairing defenseman. Plain and simple.

The other problem is that we don't have others who can play the top pairing.
He doesn't need to be top pairing, that is McCabe - Brodie

You have the other 2 pairs split time relatively evenly. Rielly's pair gets the soft usage with offensive zone stars and the Gio pair matches up more in the defensive zone

Lets hope KEEFE has the balls to do whats right.

His job and Dubas is on the line. Hope they smarten up and not pander to "feelings"

He's never been great in his own end, but it always seemed like his added offense made up for that. This year, his offense meh'diocre, and hes one of the worst Dmen without the puck. I just think he has to play in the #4 spot and relegated off the #1 PP; at least give someone else a sportin' chance.

Took less than market?! No team in the league would give him 7.5. None.
On many teams NO dman gets more than 5. And there are dudes much better than Rielly.

He can't shoot, can't defend. What we are paying 7.5 for? Points? There is always somebody picking up points on a bad team.

This contract is unmovable. All Dubas contracts are terrible. But this... He is giving out money like a simp.
