A player who gives his best effort every night to convince people that the team would be better without him
Effort has to be paired with competence though.

Committing long term to Rielly might be this regimes biggest mistake.
Can someone help me remember a team that did well in teh playoffs with someone like Rielly as their 1D?
Can't shoot on the PP
Can't make smart plays/passes on PP
Telegraphs every freakin pass
Can't play body
Can't play 2 on 1
Can't clear the crease
WTF
And most of the fan boys are also Dubas lovers who defend the boat anchor of a contract Dubas gave him by saying he would have got $9M somewhere else when there is zero evidence of that. I was hoping Dubas traded him before his last contract ran out because at $5M some other GM may have taken a chance on him. Now he’s worse. At best a 4-5 and overpaid by millions. Top four dman can either defend or are great offensively. He’s neither and is killing the PP. Keefe doesn’t have the balls to do what’s right and take him off the PP and give him sheltered minutes. The only issue with that is you're relying on fans/fanboys to objectively value one of their long time players. You're always going to overvalue what you have especially if you drafted and developed the player.
Would you do Matthews for Eichel and Theodore if Matthews wants $14 million plus per?
Yup!
Problem is Leafs can't know what Matthews wants until July 1st; after that his full NTC has already kicked in.
Firing Babcock was one of the biggest mistakes they made including handing over the keys to the franchise to a freakin' rookie
He doesn't need to be top pairing, that is McCabe - BrodieThe problem with Rielly is that he isn't a top pairing defenseman. Plain and simple.
The other problem is that we don't have others who can play the top pairing.

You have the other 2 pairs split time relatively evenly. Rielly's pair gets the soft usage with offensive zone stars and the Gio pair matches up more in the defensive zone

Disappointing.
Took less than market?! No team in the league would give him 7.5. None.Morgan genuinely seems like a good guy, took less than market value to remain a Leaf and all that good stuff. But even at 7.5m I was uneasy commiting to the player for another 8 years, would've been ok going in a different direction.
