Exactly what I said. You could look it up, and the whole "Muskoka 5" situation.
But I'll tell you what happened because I listened to it happen on the radio.
Leafs wanted to trade their Captain Mats Sundin, who had a full NMC. I guess he wan't interested in waving that and wanted to play out there year as a Maple Leaf, and wanted to re-sign.
Cliff Fletcher went on sports radio and said this, and the fanbase turned on Mats, because we could have got a sweet package for him at the trade deadline.
Sundin "retired" after the season but came back to the NHL and signed with the Canucks nearly midway through the season.
It was a classless thing for Fletcher to take that public like that, to get the fanbase to turn on Mats our beloved Captain in hopes of shaming him into waving his NMC.
I'd prefer not to go down that road with Tavares.
See, that's why I had to ask exactly what you were referring to. I'm surprised you think this is anything close to the same situation.
- Sundin was a far superior player despite being 4 years older than JT is now
- Sundin actually was beloved
- Sundin had been with the team for over twice as long as JT has now
- Sundin had pulled his weight from a contract and expectations standpoint every year he was here, and was continuing to.
- Sundin had played in 15 playoff series with the Leafs, winning 7, so he had a lot more reason to feel like the team "owed" him the chance to determine his own destiny
- You contend that management turned the fanbase against a player, I'm contending that in this case the fanbase is already largely against this player and need to get management to get the memo: complete opposite.
- Sundin was in an "expiring contract" situation (on a mediocre, aging team that everyone knew needed to rebuild) and it was logical for management to trade him and logical for fans to expect it as well. The idea that it was "news" when Fletcher said it on the radio, is ludicrous. The fact that the Leafs weren't making the playoffs, had Sundin on an expiring contract and did not trade him, would have told us all we needed to know, whether Fletcher said anything or not. He didn't turn anyone against Sundin who wouldn't have already been annoyed by his refusal to move. JT, on the other hand, is not an expiring contract on a mediocre team, he's just an anchor on what could be a contender. The stakes are higher. He's the #1 thing preventing this team from having a chance at a Stanley cup, this season and next, while the rest of the core gets two years older.
... and you're worried about "class"
Backing up a bit here, the whole point of my post was to point out that, as a fanbase, we either have the ability to influence management to fire Keefe or we don't. If we do, then we also have the ability to get them to move on from Tavares. Or, maybe we don't have the power to do either. But it seems, correct me if I'm wrong, that a lot of people seem to think we could do one, but not the other.
Not to take a firm position on the matter, but I remember whining and crying until they brought Clark back. And I remember Larry Murphy being run out of town for less than nothing just a year later. So it's not like it would be without precedent in Toronto.
"But we're so helpless," say Leafs fans.
"we can't move JT, has has a no move clause and he won't waive it no matter what they say. And besides, he's our beloved captain and it would be classless."
