Top six is fine, we need an impactful third line. With the sudden plethora of serviceable D, and soloist goaltending, Dubas can use the cap money to shore up our forward depth. Look at the cup winners, our third line is awful in comparison, Kampf aside.

2LW and 3C is probably our biggest needs, especially since Robertson is hurt. Knies can hopefully take 3LW or 2LW, but if not Kerfoot is gonna have to be in the top 6 probably

We could use a defenceman with grit, but imo we are pretty set with Rielly, Brodie, Gio, Sandin, Liljegren, and one of Holl or Timmins. Then we got Benn and Mete as 8/9.

Stand pat (I honestly wouldn't have that as an expectation even if this team maintains its current roll through to that time-TDL). As of right now, I'd likely look to bolster the forward group with a winger that could play on the 2nd line.

Nothing. The team is playing fine and frankly they need to prove they can win a playoff round before the team sinks even more assets into bolstering them for the playoffs. Have wasted way too many assets just to go out in 7 games.

We must not forget history, full stop.

FORGET ABOUT WHAT HAS HAPPENED EARLY THIS SEASON!!!!

In the playoffs, last three years, what have we been missing?
1) Tough physical D-man in top 4
2) tough physical winger in top 6
3) G that can win a series

That's what we need . . . I think we can forget about #3 for NOW . . . and concentrate on #1 and #2

It's gotta be a top-6 center to play on the third line. I think we can still find minutes to play them, especially if we are defending a lead. Something like:

Bunting - Matthews - Nylander
? - Tavares - Marner
?- O'Rielly/Horvat - Jankrok
Engvall - Kampf- Zar

Gritty middle 6 forward.
Top 4 gritty defensive dman.

The team is playing great right now, but after 6 years of getting knocked out in the first round, I think it's pretty clear success in the regular season doesn't equal success in the playoffs. It's an oversimplification, but I think one of our primary issues in the playoffs has been inability to protect the front of our net, and inability to drive the net of our opponents.

With Muzzin out especially, our blueline is certainly on the "soft" side. I say top 4 above, because I don't think a bottom pairing guy playing ~12-14 minutes a night moves the needle enough, and we already have Jordie Benn internally if we want a physical bottom pairing guy.

Either ROR or Timo Meier

ROR provides us an elite 3c with cup winning pedigree. He's a playoff monster and we can make him the matchup center against the likes of Kucherov/Point and Boston's top line. He already owns Marchand/Bergeron/Pastrnak lol

Meier gives us the physical, scoring power forward we've dreamed of. Come playoff time we've struggled with scoring goals and this is probably the best scorer you could get. It also gives us a lot of options for how we set the lineup. Do you want him on line 2 with Tavares/Marner? Do you want to run Matthews/Marner, Tavares/Meier and give Willy his own third line? The additional positive behind him is that he will be an RFA at the end of this year. So, even if we shell out assets for him we will still have his rights and can deal him somewhere for good value. Look at what Minnesota got for Fiala in a similar situation. This way, you may burn a first + something else to get him, but you'll end up recouping that value

what would it take to get one of them?

Whatever we do, we 100% don't need another dman. Top 6 LW or upgrade at 3C would be our biggest need but even then I think this team could win the cup as constructed if they can play like this in the playoffs.

I would LOVE ROR I have a thread about him on the main boards he's my top target.

But there is a guy we aren't talking about and we should be.

And that's Sean Monahan.

He's played really well for Montreal, I don't think he's going to cost a top asset to acquire but at the same time he makes our center depth ridiculous.

Matthews
Tavares
Monahan
Kampf

Who could match that down the middle?

Not many if any.

I also want Luke Schenn and Nick Jensen.

This run is proving to me that you can never have to much defensive depth they are literally playing their #10 defense right now in Connor Timmins.

Go get another body or 2

With Benn, Schenn is not needed. Benn can play both sides.

Timmins is better than Schenn IMO.

Really like the Monahan idea.

Really not that interested in Monahan. I get he has been playing well for Montreal but he is getting offensive opportunities he wouldn't get here and isn't good enough defensively to make up for that.

You think Timmins is better than Schenn after 2 games? Only one of them being good, really? are you sure?

After missing a full year and looking this good.....I would hold off on any D upgrades and focus on upgrading up front instead.

He had 3 rough shifts on a bad skate to start the game. The rest of his game was very good. 2 good games.

Even 2 good games is a small sample size.

Lars Eller
Ivan Barbashev
Tanner Jeannot

Jonathan Toews if we can get similar kind of deal than gio

I dont want to see leafs going to overpay player like ROR, meier or whatever and finally just be disappoint. Just making smart move and add some intensity and grit with player also able to contribute offensivly ( not kind of simmonds or clifford)

Agreed/ But the Leafs don't have to make a trade today, or tomorrow. There is time to see what they have there.

Right now IMO LW/#3C is more of a pressing issue, although I am liking what I see from Holmberg. Always on the right side of the puck. Not much finish though.

I look at Anaheim and see Henrique and Comtois.....with retention, I wonder if there is a deal that can be made there.

meier is the move ....... and should be the priority.
not only does he solve the 1LW problem this team has had for a decade but also buntings gets pushed down the lineup in a more appropriate role.
also from all the suggestions being put out, it wouldnt be a rental because hes an RFA at the end of the year. At that point depending on what he wants for money, you can trade him for assets or get creative
