Bo Horvat and here's why.

If the Leafs were to acquire Bo, or Monahan If he keeps up his level of play, or another player.

If they can acquire a #2 center It solves the top 6 wing issue because It allows them to move Tavares to the wing.

Imagine a full time line of

Tavares Matthews Marner

Or Tavares Matthews Nylander

Or Tavares Horvat Marner

Or Tavares Horvat Nylander

So many options.

and then If you ever needed to you could always run.

Matthews
Tavares
Horvat

Down the middle.

The primary idea for getting Horvat would be to move Tavares to the wing and solve the need for a top 6 winger instantly.

But If they ever wanted or needed to do It during a game the secondary option of being able to run a 3 headed monster of Matthews Tavares Horvat down the middle should the situation call for It is also enticing
Same thing but with that Kadri guy

We don't need a top 4 if we use Giordano as he should be. He might actually be the best dman on the team.

Toews or Horvat.

A forward that can score but is ultra responsible in his own end.

I'd actually prefer toews because he'd be way cheaper.

And the pipe dream is toews+Murphy.
Yeah, I have had my eye on Toews since the offseason. The ideal would be the Giordano treatment where we acquire him at the TDL and he re-sign at the minimum in the off-season.

A player we can throw in the bottom 6 who can score

This is our bottom 6 at practice today:

Kerfoot - Kampf - Engvall
ZAR - Holmberg - Simmonds

Which one of those guys can you honestly count on to score in a playoff series?

1st Tier: Cam Fowler, Adam Henrique/Ryan Strome

2nd Tier: Luke Schenn, Zach MacEwan,William Carrier.

I’d use our late first in the first scenario. Makes a lot sense needs-wise and we have a decent trade history with the Ducks.

Second tier: Hits. Think Carrier would be toughest to acquire. We could parlay middling assets for the most part I would think.

Well you would go a long way by swapping Simmonds for Malgin, even if he only has 4 points so far this year.

Also remember that you can have Jarnkrok/Robertson + Knies in that mix too.

I think 3C is the place to add, assuming someone looks good at 2LW (Malgin, Robertson, Jarnkrok, Knies, or Kerfoot), but the Leafs do not have needs right now if they are fully healthy.

Whatever best upgrades are available, any position. All things being equal, preferably a couple of hard driving bottom six forwards who don't shy away from contact or the net.

This team doesnt need much ... just scoring ...

Enough with this we need defense bullshit , if a mayfield going to help this group score ? , we need scoring .... engvall, kerfoot, zar, kampf, simmonds, malgin, bunting holmberg cant reliably score, each guy can have xg of 100% but its meaningless if the puck doesnt ever go in

We have have four or five David Kampfs already, wtf do we need another one for?

Multiple reasons. If one of Matthews/Tavares/Kampf/Holmberg get injured, our 5C is forcing one of our wingers like Kerfoot/Jarnkrok/Engvall/Nylander to play C. Preferably the Leafs add another C instead of not having any real C depth at all.

Also, since Kampf is a UFA after this season and will likely get overpaid in free agency, adding Sturm at 2Mx3 would make sense as Kampf's replacement after this season.

It's to bad we didn't sign Perry and trade for Nick Paul.
3 yrs ago I wanted us to sign Perry some people here thought he was finished.
Nick Paul stick scratching my header why we didn't try to trade for him.
These are the type of players we should be going after at the deadline.
Our 3rd line except for kampf does nothing.

Kerfoot and Engvall pics me of they do nothing
Kerfoot gives the puck up at bad times like last might and take dumb penalties like last night.
Engvall watch Roberston on how to take out a player. A rookie that is the smallest player on the team.
If they are both here come the playoffs we will lose again.
TB and Boston will chew them up.

Why would anyone overpay Kampf? He's a defensive specialist who can barely score, and not a good option for a 3C. Neither is the mediocre Sturm. With Muzzin out long-term there should be better options available as rentals, ideally someone who can play at both ends since depth scoring has been awful to start the season.

Kampf is a pretty excellent depth piece that works. I would keep him for continuity and just know he can fill that role and well.

At the deadline I'm thinking we should get a couple of the best high end forwards we can. I still don't trust the makeup of our defense, but maybe we need to make a correction here and be able to win those 5-3 games and give the Big 4 a feeling like they have more scoring backup. The defensive strength of this team will be by committee and not necessarily with high end personnel.

I think Kampf is actually a good candidate for a bargain extension by the Leafs.

His low offensive totals I think will neuter a lot of potential free agency interest from teams.which don't realize how good he is defensively

I think he ends up with a longer term extension with the Leafs
