Say what you will about Lou, his teams have extreme discipline and are always hardworking. Dubas is running a country club like atmosphere. The little children obviously prefer a country club.

Theres a reason Lou has had more success every year with the Isles than we have had in 25 years.

I agree on most of this as well. One thing I might differ from some is the cause of this being the JT signing, not as much about the Marner deal ($2M extra to Marner isn’t what kills this)

I agree, that’s a really attractive FA, but the one instance I would pass is when I already have a 21 year old franchise centre and 3 important RFA’s coming out.

I don’t want to see Marner traded, but now they’re at a point where that might be the best solution to restructure the team. I think this was all avoidable so it’s pretty disappointing to be here having these conversations today.

lou offered Tavares 8 years at a AAV of 11.25.

Well, I'd like to see us add effective toughness before we make that judgement. That's not Thorton, Vescey, etc, and unfortunately that's probably not Simmonds anymore.

Tampa Bay also had a soft core. Stamkos, Kucherov, Point and Hedman are not known for their physicality. But Tampa augmented their core with guys like Coleman, Goodrow and Maroon, and the rest is history. I don't see why we can't do the same.

But again, we can’t add any quality. We can only add guys making min wage or just above it. We’re going to lose Hyman this summer because we can’t afford him.

The funny thing is the Leafs are actually really good. The defense and goaltending wasn’t a liability. Most teams would take a D core of Reilly/Muzzin/Brodie. You have Dermott being a 7th guy and Sandin struggling to get into the lineup. The depth scoring did its job. The top line had a bad playoffs. Inexcusable but should ideally be fixable.

People act like this is the 2004 leafs with some old dudes making 10m when it’s 23 year olds and Tavares.

We didn't know what we had... because we never had it.

You can point to LL's poor signings, old school thinking etc. But ultimately, he's achieved more with the Isles with less talent. Right now its not looking good for Dubas and Shanahan. Hope they prove people wrong, but a large segment of this fan base doesn't have much faith in Dubas at this point and its hard to blame them. Me, I'm not blaming anybody - I really don't care who's fault it is and what went wrong. No matter which way you look at it, this year was an UTTER failure, maybe the worst we've had yet given the expectations with what they achieved in the regular season and the talent this team has. It really doesn't appear the top players can handle being stars in the playoffs...or atleast not yet. Where does the blame lie if I had to choose? - everyone. The folks building the team (GM, President, etc), the folks preparing the team (coaches, other staff, psychologist, etc.) and finally the players themselves. On that last point though, most of the players were not playing poorly, so the blame rightfully should be on the stars who didn't play to their potential. If they did....Leafs are likely in the Semis right now at the very least.

Our salary cap troubles are overstated (at least for next year). Freddy leaving frees up a lot of money. Getting rid of Kerfoot frees up $3.5 mil - enough to pursue Toronto guys like Cizikas, Goodrow. Foligno might give us a discount and come in at around $2m.

Then there's the trade route.

We have more options for next year than people think. Just gotta pick the right ones.

That sounds good for his number 1 centre slot in New York.

What do you think he would have paid him in Toronto to be the number 2 centre?

I would guess the same but 1 less year. I’d rather money be spent on Centre’s than a winger.

hell, I’m all for trading Marner for Eichel

Matthews
Eichel
Tavares

down the middle? Good lord

They've both done good and not-so-good things with the Leafs. I don't see the obsession with comparing them and there is absolutely no way of knowing where we'd be right now if Lou had stayed. As always hindsight is 20/20. It's easy to bash after the fact when , if most of us are being honest, we thought we at least had the best team in Canada this year going into the playoffs. I'd love to see a thread whereby everyone "honestly" notes what they thought about the various transactions of this team "as soon as they happened" rather than after the fact, starting which the drafting of Willie. Not every transaction but the most important ones. I mean we're all GMs so I'm sure we all had it figured out right?...What the hell, why not throw in some things you wanted done that didn't transpire?

so if this is the case… why did the Leafs suck with Lou? Or does it only apply when teams win a bit.

also, if NY loses this year in the 3rd, would their fan base be happy? That’d be two years in a row they failed to make the finals. Is being a semi finalist all Islander fans want?

Never understood why people need to put down what Lou Lam has done as a way of propping up Dubas and his failings. It really looks dumber and dumber with each passing series win.
That narrative is Definitely not aging well......

We played at expectations with Lou. Now we are playing far below them.

Same as the rumoured Stamkos deal? $12.5M or so.

Up and comers didn't seem to scare Lou from big offers. He had Matthews coming in and made that deal to Stamkos. Barzal finished a point or two ahead of Tavares in scoring when Lou offered JT that deal

@Peasy Man. You're really scraping the bottom of the barrel when it comes to trying to defend Dubas aren't you? LMFAO.

Letting them do whatever the hell they want doesn't seem to be working too well either.

You think we had better systems with Babcock? I think our defensive play has improved with Keefe. I don't see that they get to do what they want. Though I think Keefe should shuffle the lines little bit more.
