The View From Section 301
I think LA earned their fortune last night and I don't think Anaheim played that much better than them. Ducks even caught some breaks on both their goals thanks to Quickie. The biggest hurdle was the loss of RR tho.
The Ducks seem to snuff out most of LA's prime scoring opportunities, but all year long they have scored some pretty crappy/scrappy goals against LA themselves.
I'm actually gald they don't have Penner anymore. He seemed to step up against his old mates.
Still that being said, it is going to be a tough series. I have no gut feeling about it one way or another.
I agree wholeheartedly with the bolded (with my own emphasis added); we were in Section 301, with a great view of everything, and overall, this was a game of stretches...for instance, the first 5 minutes or so, heavily favored the Kings (the shot count was 5-1 at one point, IIRC).
On balance, the play probably favored the Ducks a bit more, but it definitely wasn't a territorial slaughter like some are saying (although admittedly Quick did have to make a few tougher saves than anything Hiller saw).
I also agree 100% about Penner; I suspect the outcome would've been different last night if he was still on the Ducks (especially in a tight game like that). Thank God for shortsighted trades, hmm?
Lastly, I will say this: while the game was "close," it quickly became apparent that the Ducks as a team are noticeably faster than the Kings (there are of course exceptions, like Pearson; I'm talking
overall). That's why I think the Kings MVP last night was actually Kopitar; he controlled the play physically when he needed to, and used his speed --which I had forgotten how much he had (of course, I might be thinking back to last playoffs, when he looked like Maxim Kuznetsov) to neutralize the Ducks' rushes.
