Dude is making it really, really hard for me to keep my promise about reserving judgment until the playoffs. He does nothing at all. He is worse than Vesey.
Thanks for the clarification.Definitely felt he was in the same league as CuJo (better in his peak though), a hair behind Belfour, but the other 3 are some of the alltime best so no comparison there. The thing that held him back was after 1997 the team was AWFUL. Then he started dealing with injuries.
He put up decent numbers on some of the dark ages teams, but the team couldn't score most of those years and this was still an era where people viewed goalie "wins" as indicative of skill. 2000-01 was their best offense since the 97 season, but the team had a bunch of defensemen and 3rd/4th liners that weren't really NHL level talent playing major minutes and that was his worst statistical season before he hurt his knee...at which point the team started giving up 4 goals a game and you realize Richter was the only reason they weren't giving up 4 goals a game all season.
After that, he really started to battle injuries much more often and never was the same as in his peak.
But in his peak, he could go toe to toe with anyone in the league and hold his own.
If only by Blais' suckitude. At least Tarasenko hasn't concussed any Rangers yet. It's REALLY sad that Blais was more noticeable out there on the ice than he has been.
This would make a great thread of its own in the summer, but in short: most fans thought he was a decent goalie who played Big in Big Games. Rangers fans saw him stand on his head night after night after night and still lose behind some awful defences. Some saw the Stanley Cup, World Cup, and his play in the Olympics as proof he was clutch, we saw it as proof of his ability. What was the general consensus among Ranger fans on Mike Richter after '94? As an outsider at the time, I thought he was a decent goalie with a few great years. He wasn't in the same league as Cujo, Hasek, Roy, Eddie Eagle or Fatso, but that doesn't seem to be the sentiment among NYR fans.
That’s fair. The best goaltending I’ve seen was probably Luongo during his first stint with Florida. to me that was the epitome of consistently elite goaltending. This would make a great thread of its own in the summer, but in short: most fans thought he was a decent goalie who played Big in Big Games. LMAO McIlrath is right-handed you bozoThink Washington will give us McIlrath for him? We need a LHD...
From a Blues fan,
His treatment here was really strange. I think he was a great guy, teammate and did a lot for the city away from the ice. He never had a complete game away from the puck, but it was much much better Pre 2019. Since then, the effort has just deteriorated by the game. He appears "lazy" in all zones, but the most disappointing part of his game the last couple years is the offense too. He struggles to maintain the puck, receive the puck and doesn't get his shot off as quick as he did in the past. Coaches not once ever called him out. Media not once ever called him out. Half the fan base called him out, but the other half was completely oblivious. It was strange.
He'll still have his moments, but I'm not confident he's a guy you want playing 15+ minutes a night in a playoff series anymore.
Good write up. That's what he's been like here. From a Blues fan,
