This is a fair trade for both sides as Vegas should be pleased with adding a player of Ivan Barbashev’s caliber.

Barbashev is a good 200FT player and is also a reliable penalty killer, does all the things a bottom 6 forward does and more as an extremely versatile forward that can play all 3 forwards positions.
He’s not good defensively at all. Just because he hits and will sellout to block a shot every now and then doesn’t mean he’s a defensive stalwart

He’s got 1.3ppg….

Jesus some people have no clue what they’re talking about.

Kidney isn’t close to as good a prospect as Dean with regards to an NHL future.

Dean is the most NHL transferable player on the Olympiques roster, by a sizeable margin.
Some people form an opinion despite a lack of factual support and want everybody to know about it.

There was no first round “pick” it was was a drafted player. Oops.
Yeah…and? It’s not like people have been saying that he was guaranteed to land a first. That chatter all came from insiders saying he could land a first, not that he would. And a recent first round pick absolutely could be considered to fall in that bucket in terms of asset quality.

And he landed the equivalent, which is even better than a late 1st this draft.

Dean ain't no Kostin.

I'm not talking about the Leafs, I'm not even 100% sure he's needed after the ROR trade.

But NJ, Carolina, Tampa, Colorado etc.

I can't believe nobody beat that

Not sure if serious.

All those teams you mentioned have bigger fish to fry. Most of them are after Kane and/or Meier. And Colorado in particular, need a high scoring 2C, not another all situations middle 6 player. They already have the likes of Lehkonen, ERod, Nichushkin, Compher, etc, in two-way roles.

Judging from your post, you don't have anything good or insightful or even accurate to say. So keep your thoughts to yourself; I didn't ask for them in the first place, AND it's necessarily a f***ing load of hot air.
Bro you posted on a message board, doesn't matter if you asked for his opinion or not. He has every right to give his thoughts. Just because you don't agree doesn't mean you gotta be pissy.

...And I have every right to call someone wrong.

I'm cool with this. We got a prospect. Blues can re-sign Barbie in the off-season.

All good. Thanks Vegas.

I honestly wish Vegas would just sell instead of doing shit like this.
I love it. For 3 months on Barbie's contract we get your prospect. You might get a leg up on signing him in the off-season, but there is no guarantee.

you will love Barby. Go watch the game against Pittsburgh yesterday on ESPN+, and listen to the announcers rave about his 200 foot game. Loves to play heavy and has a little vinegar in his piss!
Barby is not a good 200ft player. He hits but he is poor defensively. Rated by metrics as one of the worst defensive centers in xga in the nhl and a major part of why our team defense is so bad(it's not only on the defensemen)

You do realize how bad and incoherent the Blues have been this season, right? Just look at some of the other players like RoR, Kyrou, Krug, Schenn, etc.

I know other Blues fans have said he's a C that's playing on the wing but I personally much prefer Barbashev as a winger. I think a big part of his poor defensive impacts in his career have been due to turnovers on the breakout and below average defensive zone awareness which are both minimized when he's on the wing. Also if he can take a puck away high in the defensive zone his skating and strength lead to some breakaways.

His defensive metrics have been bad for ages. However, some of those are misleading, so it's not the only measure. As a big Barbashev fan, I'll say that he's a good penalty killer, and he does have a 200 foot game, but it's incomplete. He goes to the right spots on the ice and he wins battles, but he often coughs up the puck in bad places that result in loss of possession or rushes against. I don't have stats to back it up, but it's my armchair belief that's why his metrics look bad: he's a poor possession player, but he's good at checking and good on the rush and around the net.

All of this is correct and I'm still glad we got great value and Barbie gets to play on a contender again.

Although his underlying metrics are underwhelming, I think Barbashev should still be a good fit for Vegas. His specialties physicality, skating, and excellent finishing are most needed and should allow him to thrive in a complimentary role. His combination of skills is actually quite rare too. Win-win for both teams in my opinion.

I get that Vegas is obviously adding for the playoffs, but seems like a steep price given the targeted player. Barbashev can help the bottom-six, but he's not really well-rounded.

Wasn’t there a thread that said a 1st and a 2nd…I guess it is more of an or….late 1st or early 2nd. I don’t know enough on the prospect beyond where drafted to evaluate that.

Teams do this when they want to win the cup.
Sure, Avs traded away Helleson and Barron which led to the Cup. However, Lehkonen and Manson are twice the player that Barbashev is. I am not saying never trade away Dean, but you could've found a better target or hell, a goaler who's more of a need for VGK than a random power-forward winger which is filled up and down Vegas' lineup. Trade Dean and more for an RFA type of player instead.
But what if Zach Dean ends up like Dominic Turgeon then the trade would favor Vegas.
Always a chance my Dutch leader, however, Dean has all the showings of being much better in every way than Turgeon. I am not saying he's going to light the world on fire as a pro, but he has all the makings of becoming a very good 3rd line centre at both ends of the ice. Those are very valuable in the playoffs.

Given that he hits often and hard, can play up and down the lineup, center or wing, and all special teams, that's the definition of well-rounded. You shouldn't use him in a shut-down role, but that's true of most players, especially bottom-sixers.

He's not good defensively, so that really limits the types of situations you can use him in. Kind of a big knock against being "well-rounded".
