It could even be a Zach Dean!A boat's a boat but a mystery box could be anything!

Blues are building quite a solid and young top-9 up front. Kyrou-Thomas-Buchnevich-Neighbours-Snuggerud-Bolduc-Dean-Alexandrov-Toropchenko. The retool will be fast for them
You answered your own question. A (presumably late) 2024 2nd probably (or if) sees NHL ice typically D+3 which puts his rookie year 2027ish. On a team that is trying to fast track a retool, that doesn't work. Blues easily say no.I'm surprised Vegas couldn't get him for a 2nd(would have to be a 2024 2nd but still)
Same draft as Knies (57th) and you see him as untouchable. Don't get me wrong I completely understand how D+1.5 years affects a prospects's value and Knies > Dean right now, but your comment makes it seem like Dean's value has collapsed purely on the conjecture that non-gaudy offensive numbers for a 20 year old is how a prospect should be judged. Dean actually made the WJC over our own pick Bolduc (who's having a great D+2 campaign). Dean sounds like someone with a limited ceiling but a fairly high floor. If he's a fairly safe projectable third liner then getting that for Barbashev is pretty solid. Boston was probably the only team who might have given a late 1st for Barbashev and they spent it, so if it were Dean versus two seconds (especially if the buyer already shipped out their 2023 2d) or Dean versus a 2d plus B/B+ prospect we'd take Dean. That's it? That seems dirt cheap I'm surprised nobody beat that.

But your point was the Blues didn't get value and the Blues don't need a prospect who can play in the NHL at the end of his 2023 season. They need a prospect who is likely to play in the NHL, and he's projected as a third liner like Barbashev right? My point in bringing up Knies is, if the Blues could have gotten a whole lot more, then Knies is that kind of more, but it's also not difficult for you to understand why Barbashev didn't bring Knies. So if they could have gotten a whole lot more but still less than Knies I am not sure what type of prospects you mean. The comparison doesn't really work though, the part you are missing is that there is a legitimate chance Knies plays in the NHL following the end of his college season.
There is a reason why we wouldn't trade him for a rental.
Where does the post state they are bigger names?Today I learned that Lafferty and McCabe are bigger names than Ryan O'Reilley and Vladamir Tarasenko.

I think you summed it up pretty well here.Interesting return. Barbashev is a tough one to pin down on value. He's not really the 60pt player from last year, but he does have some of that element to him, as a guy who can move up the lineup as needed. He's got that versatility. Really the type of player Vegas built their initial success on actually. Going to be interesting to see how his Vegas stint influences his "value" in the UFA market this summer. That's a contract i'm really curious to see, how teams view him as a player.
It's curious to see it be a single, recent late-1st type prospect. Kind of looks like a fill-in for Barbashev's role, that isn't actually too far down the pipe compared to a straight up draft pick. I expected more like a 2nd + other pick, or lesser prospect. Definitely looks like St.Louis prioritizing this "fast track" retool here. Also continuing to stockpile assets to throw at a guy like Meier though.
Blues should make a move for Chychrun, especially with all the extra assets they've gained the past couple of weeks. We are more worried about our defense. Our top 4 all have term, cost $23.5M combined and does not have a true #1 D amongst them. Defense is the weakest part of our team this year. We need to fix the D for the top 9 to matter. Thankfully, many of us believe hiring an Xs and Os defensive coordinator will go a long way to fixing our issues there. But we still need to move out someone and bring in a top pairing guy....no easy feat.
Why would a rebuilding team go to such lengths to get two months out of a UFA?This means more for the Blues for Meier than it does Vegas imo
Takes two to tango. If Bill Armstrong is going to ask for the moon then I hope the Blues don't pay that price.Blues should make a move for Chychrun, especially with all the extra assets they've gained the past couple of weeks.
Leddy only makes 4mil AAV?Blues D contracts make it difficult to fix on the fly.
Krug has 4 more @ 6.5 AAV, 17 mil over next two years.
Faulk and Leddy at 3 more years @ 6.5 and 4.75 AAV's respectively.
Parayko @ 6.5 AAV for 7 more years.
Scandella one more year @3.75 AAV.
Leddy only makes 4mil AAV?
Definitely only 4mil.Thought it was 4.75 mil, could be wrong.
Yeah that's not happening barely ppg in the Q in his draft+2 season getting outscored by a 18 year old defenceman on his own team. Smart move by Vegas to trade a prospect that isn't trending well and get value. More team should do this instead of holding on to them til they have no value.Dean looks like he'd fall in the Neighbours tier of prospect. 3rd line floor than can maybe push into the top 6 during his prime. Very happy with this deal.
oopsI was told that he was going for a 1st round pick?![]()
As noted, Leddy is only $4. Scandella is only $3.25 as well just for the record. Assuming you're talking cap hit, not actual dollars...Blues D contracts make it difficult to fix on the fly.
