I like this return for St. Louis, Zach Dean is a prospect that has been developing nicely in the Q as a 2-way center with a good work ethic.

Zach Dean is a player that knows how to get to the net, but will definitely need to get stronger, may need some seasoning in the AHL in Springfield before he earns a spot on the Blues roster.

This is a fair trade for both sides as Vegas should be pleased with adding a player of Ivan Barbashev’s caliber.

Barbashev is a good 200FT player and is also a reliable penalty killer, does all the things a bottom 6 forward does and more as an extremely versatile forward that can play all 3 forwards positions.

That's it? That seems dirt cheap I'm surprised nobody beat that.
Before last year barbashev was a 4th liner who had his highest point total as 26 in 5 seasons. Last year came out of nowhere, and while this will be his 2nd highest point total, it is nowhere close to last year. He also is one of the worst defensive centers in the league ranking in bottom among centers in xga and he is a rental.

Dean was a 1st rounder in 2021. Not sure what kind of value barbashev was expected to have. He's not the 60 point player from last year.

I didn't think Barbashev would bring back a 1st rounder, I thought it was more likely he'd bring back like a 2nd and a prospect or something like that. To be able to get a 2021 1st rounder who has progressed decently well for him is a hell of a return.

Vegas is going all-in, so I get it, but they seemed to pay a really expensive price for Barbashev here.

St Louis isn't the kind of team that needs a full on rebuild. I expect them to make some moves this summer km draft day to retool. With the draft picks they have brought in they can still have a good draft while moving some stuff around to help them improve now. This trade seems good for both sides. Vegas is really trying to compete for the Cup. They don't seem to have many good prospects to begin with , eventually they will have to do something about that. They atleast seem like a team players are attracted to sign with or be traded to.

Realistically he is 45 pt player that can play in shutdown line as well. Definitely a valuable piece in a cup run.

This also means that Barbs almost certainly walks to UFA now, LV is the last place to have his asking price in cap.

The guy is 20 years old and barely a point and game player in the junior league. Bad trade for St.louis

He's 1.29 ppg. That is more than barely. He is 14th in the Q in ppg. He apparently had some injury issues this year which may account for his down production. He made the WJC team for Canada over our other Q prospect Bolduc, who is well over ppg at 1.82. So Canada's WJ management liked what Dean brought beside pure scoring.

I'm not too familiar with Dean so I won't say you are wrong. But as a Blue's fan, there is some upside. I definitely like we went for a prospect that is potentially nearer to ready than a late 2nd round pick would be,

Barbashev isnt a playoff player. Wrong move Vegas! Should hept this asset

The line he was on in the cup run of Steen Barbie and Sundqvist was actually pretty solid for us during the cup run.

His stats are fairly skewed by being a 4th line player for almost all of the games aside from last season. He's a middle 6 forward who plays his role. What his role on Vegas will be who knows. He's never going to drive a line, but he is a pretty good complimentary piece especially if the line is forechecking.

What does the leafs have that would have beat a recent late first rounder, that's developing toward a solid middle 6 player?
The Leafs have a bunch of good prospects. Not sure why they would beat that offer though considering the Blues would also need to take a player back or retain. 1st rounder for Barbashev is a win for STL.

I'm not talking about the Leafs, I'm not even 100% sure he's needed after the ROR trade.

But NJ, Carolina, Tampa, Colorado etc.

I can't believe nobody beat that
The Blues are trying to avoid a 5-6 year rebuild. By getting a 1st rounder D+2, they can help accelerate icing a competitive team quicker than a late second which is what a pick would have been. I don't know other teams who would give up that D+2 1st rounder in your list.

That's a bad return. A 2nd rounder in 2023 would have been better.

2nd rounder from a contender (late 2nd) would not be a better return than Dean.

I checked Capfriendly the answer is no but close. They drafted Hague 34th overall.

What's even more concerning they have 2 players total on their roster they've drafted.

He’s part of the Meier return if they get him mostly likely.

Interesting return. Barbashev is a tough one to pin down on value. He's not really the 60pt player from last year, but he does have some of that element to him, as a guy who can move up the lineup as needed. He's got that versatility. Really the type of player Vegas built their initial success on actually. Going to be interesting to see how his Vegas stint influences his "value" in the UFA market this summer. That's a contract i'm really curious to see, how teams view him as a player.

It's curious to see it be a single, recent late-1st type prospect. Kind of looks like a fill-in for Barbashev's role, that isn't actually too far down the pipe compared to a straight up draft pick. I expected more like a 2nd + other pick, or lesser prospect. Definitely looks like St.Louis prioritizing this "fast track" retool here. Also continuing to stockpile assets to throw at a guy like Meier though.
