Biggest loser today. The Oilers. Drai is going to bounce this summer after another run that ends before even reaching round 3.

Time to find a club that will be able to compete and pay him as the top paid guy in the NHL... at least until McDavid signs his extension with Toronto.
Nah Oilers will be fine , they may lose but making a bunch of splashy moves doesn't always work,

last year the east was loading up like crazy and freaking Florida came out of that arms race lmao

Let's face it, we would all be alright with this if our team did it.
The league must do something about this cap circumvention bullshit still though

They're still reaping the benefits of an advantageous expansion draft that brought in a boatload of additional picks. It's easy to score when you're immediately put on third base.
Was it really advantageous or was it just other moronic GMs?

Didn’t Florida give them smith and Marchessault so that they could protect Petrovic?

Theodore from Anaheim so they could keep Vatanen?

Columbus foolishly leaving Karlsson for them?

Exactly. Every team should just do it. Sit their stars for half the season and see how fast Bettman fixes the loophole.

Until the loophole is fixed, it’s legal. Good on McCrimmon for having the guts to use it

At this point they should just increase the cap by a percentage for the playoffs and the 20 man roster you ice needs to be cap compliant for the playoffs. Only way to stop this insanity.

My point is that they are not "manipulating" the rules, as you say, in any illegal fashion.
While you do understand that, insofar as you are blaming the league, not VGK - why does there need to be any blame placed at all? You're of course entitled to your opinion, but nothing is inherently "wrong" or "broken" here. These are the rules of the NHL, the NHLPA, and the agreement between the two. If you don't like it...no one is forcing you to watch and follow.
Yes it is broken when a team can create LTIR space in time for the deadline then conveniently return their injured players for Game 1 of the playoffs when the cap doesn't apply anymore.

It looks bad that Sharks have to give up 2 3rds on top of retaining for 6 years, but my guess is that Grier realized when trying to deal Karlsson how hard it is to get any value back for high priced vets and decided to take the out on Hertl when he could. It's not like having Hertl on the roster has any benefit for the Sharks at the moment.

They did get two 1st, even if late, as Edstrom was a late 1st himself, out of it. That's not bad, but it does show some level of desperation by Grier. Definitely not dealing from a position of strength.

$8 million dollars retention for a late 1st round and that includes signing bonus money which owners hate.

Yes you get the deal off your books

But that is a chunk of change with very little compensation

Bravo, at this point you just have to applaud them for doing what seems impossible.

It's not impossible to do what they are doing. It's simple, they are abusing the intent of why LTIR was put in place. Technically, you are circumventing the salary cap with LTIR and it's something the NHL/NHLPA has to fix because it's becoming a big issue now. Vegas fully takes advantage of it because they are the NHL's darling team that is allowed to do it. Before Vegas, it was the Bolts. Another team will probably try it next season, unless the NHL puts their foot down. A domino effect with LTIR abuse could happen and actually force the NHL to put a stop to it.

Nice job trading within the division SJ, you morons. Look how that worked out with the Kings trading Martinez to Vegas. The future of the Sharks look f***ing bleak, like a permanent bottom feeder team.

Not sure why other GM's aren't exploiting this loophole, they're dense or something...
