This is 100% to get out from under that contract. Sharks weren’t going to get more even if he were a pending UFA at the end of his current contract (2030 or whenever). He plays a hard game and if you’re a Sharks fan you can see the wear and tear already starting to take shape. If the Sharks were contending now he would be a boon but that’s not the case. I reckon it’s a good trade for both teams, comparing their situations is apples to oranges.

Having said all that I am going to miss Hertl so much. I was about to get a Sharks Hertl sweater too. I hope he wins a bunch of cups with Vegas.
Fun must be always!!

My hate Vegas so much for their blatant cap circumvention but my god do I ever respect them for their IDGAF attitude towards it.

I really hope other GMs start taking notes and acting in the same reckless manner of we will trade/ trade for anyone at anytime
Guess who is the architect of these sneaky trades. Their Hockey OPs/President, George McPhee! He use to pull this act with the Caps. Act like nothing else is going on and then at the last sec(or beyond since deals trickle in as far into as 30 min after the deadline has passed).

It looks bad that Sharks have to give up 2 1sts on top of retaining for 6 years, but my guess is that Grier realized when trying to deal Karlsson how hard it is to get any value back for high priced vets and decided to take the out on Hertl when he could. It's not like having Hertl on the roster has any benefit for the Sharks at the moment.

They did get two 1st, even if late, as Edstrom was a late 1st himself, out of it. That's not bad, but it does show some level of desperation by Grier. Definitely not dealing from a position of strength.
Sharks didn’t give up any 1sts. They gave two 3rds. But otherwise this is the correct statement from a pure business perspective. Cap era. You have to pay teams to take contracts off your hands.

Need everybody to remember, Sharks are planning for 2027-28 season and beyond

It's not impossible to do what they are doing. It's simple, they are abusing the intent of why LTIR was put in place. Technically, you are circumventing the salary cap with LTIR and it's something the NHL/NHLPA has to fix because it's becoming a big issue now. Vegas fully takes advantage of it because they are the NHL's darling team that is allowed to do it. Before Vegas, it was the Bolts. Another team will probably try it next season, unless the NHL puts their foot down. A domino effect with LTIR abuse could happen and actually force the NHL to put a stop to it.

Until a non-Florida/Vegas team does it, I can't see it getting fixed. Just like the floor circumvention for the Coyotes. Darling teams, what can you do.

Vegas are changing the game. If they win another cup, teams need to start taking the same approach and it'll be brilliant for more crazy trades.

I don't get this from the Sharks, surely Hertl could have gone in the summer for more?
If Matthews and Marner had magically been injured just before the TDL, that would free up $22m+ in caps space for the Leafs. I think the Leafs need better Management.

Wear and tear because he basically had to carry the Sharks. I could see him thriving as a 2C or 3C. Less expected from him, less minutes.

This all started with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2015.

And when they did it, the GM brought it up to the table at their next annual meeting in Boca Raton.

The league ruled that the loophole was legal and that they were not going to close it.

End of story.

Can’t blame Tampa Bay, Vegas or any other teams moving forward.

On paper wow but a lot of players will basically have no chemistry with each other besides practice. We all know how physical and fast the playoffs get. Also Hertl contract in a few years will be brutal.

Was Stone not activated prior to season ending last year? And if he returns this year, they’ll be compliant again. People need to look at the minimal dollars they actually added.

Remember the NHL warned teams last year, and said what Tampa did, won’t be tolerated again. That players need to be activated prior to season’s end. They literally added Hanifin for what? $1.5 million??

They will have huge decisions this summer, but for this season, they have used like 40 players. At the end of the day, they will have used not 1 cent more than the cap allows, and won’t be able to add playoff players without being compliant (with those players) the last day of the season. They just play the actual cap better than anyone else. They’re not circumventing anything. They get teams to retain, etc, etc.

Mark Stone is as competitive as anyone. He’s a physical mess though. Nobody’s faking injuries. It’s just pure laziness people don’t actually research how they’ve done this.

Vegas plays on Hall of Fame mode while everyone else plays at Pro. Not only will they do this, they will probably get a better return than this if it turns out they can't keep him when the cap counts again.
