San Jose has 2 1st this year, 2 1st next year,

Musty, Will Smith, Edstrom, Haultttunen, Cagnoni, Bystadt, and Eklund. San Jose has some nice assets.

Mukhamadullin too, I'm really happy with the prospect pool and hopefully we get Jr. Shark alum Celebrini to really usher in the new era. The past 20 years have had lots of highs that sadly didn't end in a cup, and the past couple years have been rough for sure.

It could be a decade for sure, but Buffalo is on their 2nd rebuild (atleast). SJ hasn't even put their first core together yet.

I guess the big advantage Buffalo had is they were able to move their core players, and had more younger-ish players. SJ had so much deadweight & no prospects, hard to replenish the pool quickly.

Yes theres no quick win for SJ. Problem with a gut down approach is that, except for a Crosby/McDavid type prospect, the losing culture seems extremely difficult to come back from.

Maybe it goes without saying, but I dont recall any team gutting everything to the ground like that and having a successful rebuild. Heck, even Buffalo cant seem to shake it off despite having numerous good pieces.

Like trading for an Audi A5 that is in the shop and doesn't run.

You are buying the Audi A5 that is in the shop but you get bring to a very hot girl to the Audi A5(while it is being fixed) so your wife does not find out:laugh:

I hope they have good fans. SJ IS the new Buffalo. Itll be over a decade before they get out of this

The Wings had this roster when Yzerman took over:

Their top picks were Zadina and Veleno and they had zero extra 1st rd picks as well as zero top 3 picks the entire rebuild.

Just 5 years later it looks like they will make the playoffs.

SJ will be brutal, but with the right management it won’t take a decade + to be respectable again.

Wear and tear because he basically had to carry the Sharks. I could see him thriving as a 2C or 3C. Less expected from him, less minutes.
2C for sure. 3C, yes in the playoffs when you're rolling 4 lines, otherwise his speed may be a hinderance. He is a responsible warrior though, and used heavily on the PK. Will definitely be able to give Vegas big boys some rest, that's for sure.

Honestly, can’t even hate on VGK that hard. It’s the GM’s job to find creative ways to build the best team possible, it’s the league who left this gaping hole in the cap.

It’s insane that the league have seen the 2015 Blackhawks, 2021 Lightning and 2023 Knights all abuse this loophole and win cups, yet still do nothing to close it. That’s exactly what happened, though. Obviously you should just have to be cap compliant in the playoffs too, but while this loophole exists, it simply makes sense to abuse the f*** out of it, as Vegas are doing.

The LTIR rule needs to be fixed. This is insanity. It should've been fixed after Tampa with Kucherov. That nothing has been done is beyond absurd.
Nobody has brought forward specific solutions that are actually feasible

The NHL won’t make stars miss the playoffs. They and the PA would not like that. The PA also won’t let “lesser” legit players sit when they played all year to get there

any other “solution” creates other problems

Every team plays by the same rules. They can do the same thing they just don’t have the assets and or the guts to pull it off.

It’s a competitive league, even if we pretend the salary cap was actually about competition and not taming player contracts, some teams are gonna do it better and imo it makes it more fun watching juggernaut teams— but teams that are super teams because they’re actually well run within a set framework and not just because they’re a rich city that can spend 300mil like nothing and wash away their mistakes

Surprised Vegas got pics back shocking trade though Goodluck with that contract in a few years ouch that's a long one and he's not young anymore. Gonna be funny if Vegas misses the playoffs this year

mike grier has to do good here
Just getting out of that contract is a win everything else is a bonus

One more year for Burns. SJ is running out of players to retain money on.
This has to be the first time a GM will start a season with no retention slots.

Yeah, you shouldnt use your retention slots so you can use your retention slots

That makes sense
Most teams try to keep one or two if they're tanking so they can retain. SJ has used them all for next year as well.

Couldn’t they just make it that whatever roster you ice in the post season is cap compliant?

aure you could acquire people to cover for injuries in the regular season but if you want to now play that player in the post season, then someone is sitting
