Is Hertl still good?
Hertl is still a great puck possession C. He knows how to use his body and he has pretty great hands. He can make plays. He's not a pure goalscorer. He's no longer a 1C on a contender. He has injury history to his knees and just had a knee scope, which is why he's on IR.
Sharks fans are very emotional about this because Hertl is extremely likeable and he's the last truly beloved vestige of a great era of Sharks hockey. But ultimately as a long-term, NMC'd contract for a player who is past his prime and no longer a top line player on a cup contender, the return is probably market rate.
The Athletic says:
"In Hertl, the Golden Knights add another high-end forward who is good in all three zones. Hertl is a playmaker, has scoring ability and is responsible in his own end. He’s particularly good around the net and below the goal line and should help Vegas’ in-zone offense tremendously when healthy.
The Sharks get out from under a contract that maybe shouldn’t have been signed in the first place, because it conflicted with what the long-term vision should have been. But they make out well with David Edstrom (the Golden Knights’ top prospect) and a 2025 first-rounder, which should help this team push its rebuild along. This is the caliber of trade the Sharks have really needed in this process. Being without now two of their retention slots until 2027 hurts a rebuilding team’s ability to leverage their cap, but it would have been impossible to trade Hertl without that."
