They just got a pick for a goalie swap , they can retain and help teams with the cap in otherways in 3 way deals .

Instead of retaining they just take a cap dump player. teams will pay picks for that too so I don't see it as a problem
Yep they could still take other peoples problem contracts for sure, I'm literally just saying it's super weird for a team to use all 3 a full year in advance.

Yes and no, The players the team drafted who went to other teams didn't really do all that much except for Suzuki. Brannstrom, Glass, Krebs, Brisson looks meh... Vegas had the ammo to take chances and when they didn't work they just didn't rest on the laurels. They kept at it. Seattle didn't have the same opportunities because GMs adjusted.
Even still I think Seattle is a good example because even in that context a lot of people thought they were making ‘what?’ moves

It felt like they were trying to be bad and draft high

They had the bad start, last season was good but arguably somewhat overperform in with some super high shooting percentages and now they’re back in the middle and the conference isn’t even that strong beyond the top few teams

George McPhee has his flaws as a GM without a doubt, but he’s is great to helm a rebuild

When you look at the sheer quality of goaltending available to both teams at the draft it's easy to see how advantageous it was.

Close, 66 is the record.
Glass?

They should have traded with a team that would have just sent a bad contract back 🤦

How the f*** does Vegas still have their 2024 1st?
It's a late pick and apparently teams aren't valuing picks in this draft outside the top 20.

I just said the league and the PA won’t want that. Sitting a fun star player is bad business, and even if the league wanted teams sitting multiple paid support guys instead (I doubt) the PA would certainly fight that

Ultimately the league makes sure the guys on LTIR are injured, but can’t stop them from coming back before they’re 100% (they’re not “miraculously healthy”. They’re most likely just not full recovered) as that’s NHL tradition to play hurt

Perks of being super well run teams
They could maybe fight it, but it’s still a very feasible fix

You can predict a decade out? Amazing!

I can make informed prediction based on what happened in the past and what is currently going on.

Of course if the Sharks draft a generational talent, they'll be competitive a little faster.

TD must be like Xmas for KM
Looks what’s available to trade for with
Vegas’s future 1st and 2nd draft picks.
While keeping some presents 🎁 unopen in LTIR

Well, there is only Couture and Vlasic with high priced contracts and I doubt those two have any trade value.
There's also the chance (previously mentioned in this insane thread) that Couture is done forever and will be on LTIRetirement soon enough. Then the only casualty of this was not being able to retain on Vlasic, but Grier probably decided that Vlasic was completely untradeable anyway, so that slot would never be used on him.

People keep saying "nobody has ever gone into a season with no retention slots." Well, arguably the mess that Grier inherited was the worst of the cap era with how many aging stars were on NMCs with term. So what else are the retention slots for?

The vision is pretty clearly to bottom out this year and the next year, and then Burns's slot is open, and we are drafting 7 times in the top 50 in the next two seasons.

Yeah, it could fail and we could become Buffalo. Or it could work with a little lottery luck and drafting skill. The chances historically seem to be about 50/50 in the cap era that a full teardown results in a disaster vs. a contender. I'll take the odds, because two years ago we were 0% chance building a contender.

Sorry to see Tomas go though. He'll be sorely missed.

570 posts talking about money and cap management :eyeroll:

Is Hertl still good?
Hertl is still a great puck possession C. He knows how to use his body and he has pretty great hands. He can make plays. He's not a pure goalscorer. He's no longer a 1C on a contender. He has injury history to his knees and just had a knee scope, which is why he's on IR.

Sharks fans are very emotional about this because Hertl is extremely likeable and he's the last truly beloved vestige of a great era of Sharks hockey. But ultimately as a long-term, NMC'd contract for a player who is past his prime and no longer a top line player on a cup contender, the return is probably market rate.

The Athletic says:
"In Hertl, the Golden Knights add another high-end forward who is good in all three zones. Hertl is a playmaker, has scoring ability and is responsible in his own end. He’s particularly good around the net and below the goal line and should help Vegas’ in-zone offense tremendously when healthy.

The Sharks get out from under a contract that maybe shouldn’t have been signed in the first place, because it conflicted with what the long-term vision should have been. But they make out well with David Edstrom (the Golden Knights’ top prospect) and a 2025 first-rounder, which should help this team push its rebuild along. This is the caliber of trade the Sharks have really needed in this process. Being without now two of their retention slots until 2027 hurts a rebuilding team’s ability to leverage their cap, but it would have been impossible to trade Hertl without that."

I think we are going to see the league create some sort of LTIR freeze at the end of the regular season. Players on LTIR cannot be activated for playoffs for X days... Effectively keeping them out of 2-3ish games.

To anybody familiar with the VGK Salary cap situation going forward: does the Hertl acquisition by Vegas hinders their abilities to offer Hanifin a long term contract?

If it's the 7 million for 8 years that I saw mentioned elsewhere then they should be able to.

On top of that Korczak is ready, he will be getting a smaller contract post-ELC and we can likely trade one of Hague or Whitecloud to recoup a 1st or something.

When the TSN guys mentioned Vegas I thought it was some random trade (like a 6th for an extra forward).

Man nobody saw this coming. I can't believe they got Grier to retain for that long. Bravo McPhee/McCrimmon.

Good old Bob McKenzie from the top rope with the last second shocker. Classic.

Guys semi retired and STILL has the biggest news scoops.
