Confirmed Trade: [VGK/SJS] Tomas Hertl (17.05% retained), 2025 and 2027 3rd round picks for David Edstrom, 2025 1st round pick

Don’t especially like this trade from San Jose’s POV when you factor in the six year retention for over $8m. The retention alone is worth Edstrom or more.

Would think if Hertl were traded this summer he’d return at least a 1st+2nd without any retention. With a good possibility the 1st would be an earlier pick than the Vegas 2025 1st.

On the other hand Hertl has a full NMC, so SJ didn’t have full license to trade him to any team he didn’t want to go to.

When the TSN guys mentioned Vegas I thought it was some random trade (like a 6th for an extra forward).

Man nobody saw this coming. I can't believe they got Grier to retain for that long. Bravo McPhee/McCrimmon.

Guys semi retired and STILL has the biggest news scoops.

and not that I'm complaining but Vegas getting two thirds from San Jose seemed odd

This all started with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2015.

And when they did it, the GM brought it up to the table at their next annual meeting in Boca Raton.

The league ruled that the loophole was legal and that they were not going to close it.

End of story.

Can’t blame Tampa Bay, Vegas or any other teams moving forward.
I’m coming back to this post into quote it in the future.

Valuewise you don't love SJ throwing in a pair of 3rds, but ultimately getting out of Hertl's contract & getting the two 1sts is a positive move for the organization.

SJ's just in a tough spot, they are going to be bad for awhile.

If your an SJ fan I think you just want to see a clear path out of this tunnel, and not become the next Buffalo.
They can recoup those 3rds and more taking on cap dumps over the next 2-3 years

Doubt they will. Seems the saved money is an attempt to recoup lost income from attendance. Also, even if they do, the difference would be high thirds vs the first pick of the third.

When you look at the sheer quality of goaltending available to both teams at the draft it's easy to see how advantageous it was.

Glass?

"Come to San Jose! Hockey's NEWEST Landfill!"
I mean it's a place to be for a bit , you get exciting young draft picks pretty fast and you have something to cheer for as you start building something

Nobody wants that full Hertl contract, you have to retain.

San Jose has a pretty good prospect pool, they need to hit on a couple high picks and the rebuild won’t take long.

Next trade deadline if they want to trade Vanacek, Granlund, Rutta, or any player they sign to a 1 year deal, they won't be able to retain on them.

There may be nobody left to sell right now but in a full year a lot can change.

I guess it may not matter but it's highly unusual to retain for multiple years on 3 contracts.
I’m joking. So you think they shouldn’t have made the deal, considering Hertl had a NMC, etc? All of those players are much lower priority to move than Hertl was due to contract

Pretty confident that Vegas knows rule changes are coming to prevent this kind of abuse moving forward.

So they figured might as well milk it all they can before those rule changes happen.

They already pissed off everyone, why stop now?
