The name of the game is winning the Cup. They won last year and might win again this year. Who cares about picks and prospects if you're winning?
Uh. Ok. Sure. Enjoy it. For now, is all I’m saying. Tell me Knights fans aren’t going to care in four years when they are bottom feeders.

Vegas is a ponzy scheme, they'll trade their picks away every year until some of their contracts go busto and full unmovable albatross. It's interesting to see how long it lasts. At some point, they are going to have just an absolute desolute decade, but for now they are always going to be a high demand destination due to being a cool city and no state income tax so it can keep going for a bit at least.
Most late picks don't amount to anything anyways, might as well use it as currency.

As long as Vegas continues the LTIR cycle and makes these types of savvy trades, there's no reason why they couldn't keep this up indefinitely. Obviously it will fall apart at some point since some moves will blow up on them, but it's hard not to give them credit.

They're playing chess while the rest of the league plays checkers.

Buffalo fans can help them through it, like Big Brother Big Sister

But you only get so many retention slots. Right?

Yea, but the Sharks were screwed with long contracts. They had to do something. It would be bad if this was a minor deal and they had other big contracts to retain on, but clearing Hertl, Burns and Karlsson while still getting value was important. This is a pretty big package considering the deal might still be ugly in 3-4 years even with the retention. Then after next year when Burns’ retention ends, they can probably retain on the final two years of Couture’s deal.

Hertl won’t be an albatross for 3-4 years probably. The question is why this is allowed NOW when he is clearly due back for the first month of the playoffs. And whether the Devils or Senators will get fined a pick for this circumvention.
One pick is so 2023
Gotta 2 picks now

So tomorrow we find out Greer got a new job with Vegas and submitted his resignation to San Jose at 3:05pm today?

Bettman better do his lottery rigging thing for San Jose to get the 1st overall pick. They gonna need a few of them.

Did you read where I said I'm blaming the league, not Vegas.
Vegas is definitely manipulating the rules as Tampa did with Kucherov but I fault the league for allowing this nonsense.
My point is that they are not "manipulating" the rules, as you say, in any illegal fashion.
While you do understand that, insofar as you are blaming the league, not VGK - why does there need to be any blame placed at all? You're of course entitled to your opinion, but nothing is inherently "wrong" or "broken" here. These are the rules of the NHL, the NHLPA, and the agreement between the two. If you don't like it...no one is forcing you to watch and follow.

Vegas are changing the game. If they win another cup, teams need to start taking the same approach and it'll be brilliant for more crazy trades.

I don't get this from the Sharks, surely Hertl could have gone in the summer for more?
