Nonis was just on TSN radio. He said he wants to improve the goaltending position but isn't looking to move the good young players that they have worked hard to acquire. He also mentioned doing moves to benefit the long term future of the team.

The more I listen to Nonis speak today the more I think he's not going after Luongo. I really think the Leafs are trying to add to their young core, and don't want any part of aging veterans.
I hope this is true.

Nonis will be on the Fan590 at 6 p.m.

Maybe im just paranoid after all

I didnt like the tone he was using at all during that interview in regards to young assets

I've debated with myself a lot over it, but finally I think

We shouldn't go after Luongo. Price is quite high. Kadri is showing promises lately, Gardiner is a no-go and I really don't want that albatross of contract that will haunt us forever.

Just hoping Nonis doesn't trade away those young players... Not that I don't want them traded, but not for Luongo.

Everyone is available.

However, you'd hope a great young goaltender and center were the correct targets.

I can't see Gardiner being part of the package from Toronto's perspective.

1) Besides goaltending, Toronto's defense is their most suspect position. Why would Toronto further worsen one position to improve another?
2) Gardiner is likely to be a stud in the near future. Players like that aren't easy to come by, and I can't see Nonis being willing to sacrifice him to improve the goalie position.
3) You can see from all the responses in here that trading Gardiner away would be a highly upsetting event for many fans. With that said, Canuck fans were crazy for Hodgson as well and look where that left us.

Sure, as a Vancouver fan I could *love* to see Gardiner in a Canucks uniform. I just can't see it happening.

I still say that Gillis isn't exactly in an ideal bargaining position so while I think under ideal circumstances Luongo would be worth a fair amount on the trade market, I'm pretty sure he will be a little limited as to what he can get in a return. With that said, I'm not entirely sure how strong Toronto's trading chips are for Vancouver:

Kadri: Smaller than the kind of player the Canucks have recently been seeking and RFA at end of season. Tons of potential, but so far unproven at the NHL level.

Bozak: While he would be a good fill-in for centre on the 2nd line while Kesler is out (and subsequently dropped to the 3rd when Kesler returns) he's UFA by the end of the season and could very well sign elsewhere.

I could see Colborne being the kind of player Gillis might try to seek out, but he's not a huge piece of the puzzle and he's also RFA by end of the season.

I said in an earlier post that I'd be happy with Bozak + Colborne... which I think would be fine too by most Toronto fans. But now, I'm not so sure that'd be enough from a Vancouver perspective. Still, if it is the only/best offer available....

If Jake Gardiner is getting dealt to the Canucks (He isn't)... Then it would be Cory Schnieder coming back, not Luongo.

Thank you. Sounds like maybe the world isn't falling after all. He could still be interested in Luongo, but he's saying enough that makes me believe he isn't handing over gardiner-caliber young talent for a 33 year old goalie.

I wanted Nonis in charge from the get-go, so here's hoping he's the guy I thought he was. He's had plenty of time to learn from Burke (both in terms of what to do and what not to do) so now is his time to shine.

And regarding the goalie situation, would it be funny if he traded a package including some veteran guys for someone like Bernier (for a Bernier / Reimer tandem) after Burke basically shot down any chance of the Leafs getting a younger / less proven goalie? I'd be more able to stomach that, depending of course on costs, then selling the farm for a goalie that's already peaked.

I'd like to see how Reimer doesn't under Carlyle before Leafs management does anything crazy.

If this trade doesn't happen I'm not believing a single word out of John Shannon's mouth again. He's been on this move for months now.

The thing about those guys being RFAs is that they've been spending majority of their time in the minors and won't command a ton of salary. Unless Kadri or Colborne joins the Leafs and produces some big numbers, they won't command very much money.

Bozak + Colborne, I would definitely do.

Is this a dream?? A rational Canucks fan?

I feel as though Nonis is an extension of Burke and his philosophies, but may be more "cooperative" with MLSE, but I still don't see Nonis doing Kadri + Gardiner. Kadri may definitely be used, but Gardiner has been treated as a golden prospect under Burke.

Why Bozak? Don't see how it makes sense for either team. Bozak is the #1 center on the Leafs (for better or for worse), and he's be the #3 center on the Canucks. Bozak is not exactly your prototypical 3rd line center either. I thought that the Canucks would be looking for a top 6 winger, which we have a decent amount of (Kulemin, Macarthur, JVR, Frattin likely competing for spots on the 2nd line).

Well for one reason: because Kesler is out with an injury, they could use another centerman.

Why would they need wingers? They have Booth, Raymond, Burrows, Kassian, etc. They don't need wingers. Connolly is still a very good centre who people tend to forget about. He never really got a fair shake with Kessel and Lupul, and I wouldn't mind seeing him back there if that meant we had a #1 goaltender. And in the new NHL Bozak is a typical 3rd line centre. He can produce offensively, be responsible defensively and win draws.
