Competing in the playoffs and giving yourself the chance to win the cup isn't worth it?

A shot yes, but a real legitimate shot is not realistic.
This "shot" comes at the expense of 5.3m cap hit for the next 47 years or whatever it is, plus losing two future potential stars is no worth it.

Do you really, REALLY think our garbage lineup will be able to go on an LA Kings style run? Where is our 3 headed monster at center? Grabs, Mcclement, Steckel...lol. Where is our stout D? And for what it's worth, Quick >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Luongo. This trade doesn't make us cup contenders, it makes us 8th place contenders.

I'm not willing to part with Gardiner for that.

So you do not want to make the playoffs until we are capable to finish 1st in our division years down the road?? You do realize that before you win the cup, teams usually make the playoffs FIRST. The Hawks, Kings, Ducks, Bruins all made the playoffs for consecutive years before their cup wins. It's a long process, but making the playoffs is key.

And I'm not willing to part with Gardiner, never said I was. Kadri, yes.

I really hope to God it's that burke wanted to do either of these deals but the Boards said no and fired him....

... ah who am I kidding the board will probably force Nonis into making deal number 2 arg.......

My evil side is hoping Nonis does do that deal because quite frankly I then get to laugh at all the Burke haters and that just seems like a great thing right now.

I would be beyond giddy if we somehow got Gardiner out of all this, lol.

I think I will take the week off just to head to TOR with my pitchfork and torch as I will not be pleased at all.

Bozak is a potential star?

If the leafs trade Kadri+Gardiner for Luongo...

What happens when Luongo is done? Chances are that will be in the very near future, so what was the point? We will be right back to square one, except with no Kadri or Gardiner. This whole trade is messed up.

Making the playoffs to gain experience applies when you have a young core that needs to learn how to win...doesn't really apply to trading top young assets for a goalie on the decline with a massive contract to sneak in for a couple of years.

5.3m for 10 years is so hard to stomach though.

Plus the Hawks, Wings ,Kings, Ducks, Bruins all had a #1 center.

I believe he's talking about Gardiner & Kadri.

Oh well then I'd agree, no way do I want Gardiner to be traded. I have no problem losing Kadri and Bozak for a legitimate goaltender, something this team has needed since 2006.

I'm starting to get scared nonis is going to fold and destroy the leafs for years to come by getting lou. At least with Burke you knew Gardiner was untouchable. With nonis who knows what happens.

nonis got lou for cheap so Im hoping this is the case, however if he parts with kadri and gardiner I'd be livid.

Supposedly Nonis is the one that did the leg work on the beauch for lupul and Gardiner trade so I don't think he will but who knows.

I don't want to trade Gardiner! Kadri+Bozak however is something I'd be open to. Because in three years, can we honestly say that Bozak and Kadri will even still be here. I know Bozak for sure won't.

I'm confident the Leafs won't mortgage the future to bring in Luongo.

Gms are fired for mistakes they make, not for mistakes they might make. I don't think the Luongo fiasco has anything to do with Burke being fired.

Colborne + Bozak + perhaps a 2nd round pick is more along the lines of what fair value should be in a trade for luongo

Personally, while I acknowledge that Nonis is probably more amendable to acquiring Luongo than Burke, I don't think much should change. Nonis is not JFJ. He has General Manager experience and a solid record to go along with it. If Vancouver wants too much, then I trust he will look elsewhere.

The wildcard is ownership. If they are demanding that the team makes the playoffs this year, even at the expense of the future, then we have some cause to be worried and those worries would extend beyond just overpaying for Luongo. Ownership must give complete autonomy to management for this franchise to be successful.

I dunno about the Ducks. Andy McDonald was never anything to write home about. He certainly had a good couple of years there, but how much of that had to do with a reborn Selanne?

The love for Kadri is insane the kid is very overated tell me what you have seen from him at the NHL level to justify him being a super star many make it out to be if we can get Luongo for him + Bozak would be a steal.

let's try to keep in perspective his age when he played these nhl games. not every good player in the league breaks into it like hall, crosby, tavares, etc.

i also don't see many people claiming he's going to be a super-star. i think he is the best forward prospect toronto has and he looks to have the tools necessary to be a very good nhl player, fitting into the top-6 roll.

and it's not necessarily that i think the value is off with kadri being the centrepiece of a luongo deal. if we were a better team overall, maybe this move makes sense. considering the current roster, it just doesn't make sense to me
