There was nothing good about his D, unless we pretend that Tanev doing all the heavy lifting means jack shit.
Funny, since away from Quinn he was absolute shit and Quinns worst numbers were with Tanev. One guy did carry another, just not the one you think.

I disagree completely, but thats ok

He got caved in in games 1, 4 and 6. St.Louis had periods that whole series where they dominated possession, so I don't put all of that on Hughes and I'd say he was good overall but, part of that has to fall on your best players. It was a really good first playoffs for a young defenseman, but dominant feels like a stretch.

Lol watch the #'s Nurse puts up this year. Oh, and he can actually play a lick of D too! We have the #1 offensive Dman in the NHL that took a discount and wanted to be here.
Oh Snipey thanks for the laugh, I really needed it.
Those 2 simply put were complete dog shit away from McDrai. There's a reason several articles were written showing Tyson and Nurse were the product of playing with them, the most interesting part was when they broke down how utterly useless the points Barrie got.
Look at it this way, when was the last time a Dman finished tops in points and got absolutely no Norris consideration? You do understand how pathetic that is right? Quinn at least got some votes in his rookie year. but no your right Barries the shiznit.

Do you know what's the funny thing? I didn't say Tanev carried Hughes. I said he freed him up to play at his best because he would hang back and clean up. Tanev benefited from Hughes far more than the other way around, but it also showed Hughes needs a partner who knows his role and can play it well. As for Tanev sucking, yeah he did last season because he was asked to do more than he can with the puck on his stick, that impacted how he defended as well because he couldn't focus on that one part of his game. He's a one-trick pony, a guy who has to keep the structure and stick to the basics, or else his bread and butter falls apart. I hope Makar gets a partner like that as well, and not Ryan "I'll pinch whenever I please" Graves.

Quinn's worst numbers were with Tanev are also in part a product of who he played against when paired with him.

Ooooooh, articles written! That’s certainly convincing.

Wow, I was expecting a bridge. Both sides taking a bit of risk, but I think Nucks win this one.
It’s only around $750K less than Heiskenan on an 8 year deal on the AAV. Miro the better overall D. Less than the $9 mill that Makar got on his 6 year deal which it should be.

I like all those deals. RFA D contracts haven't jumped into the stratosphere the way the F contracts have. Both Heiskanen and Makar are on really great value deals.

Hughes has some warts defensively, but he's also paced for 60+ points in each of his first two seasons. If he gets no better than he is today, he'll likely spend that whole contract in the top 10 in scoring among defensemen. That's not bad for $7.5m.

Surprised they didn't push for 8 years at that price tag.

Yes. This is not a meet in the middle sort of thing to get the players signed before the season starts. Absolutely not that.

Crazy how the Canucks didn't push for anything in these negotiations.

lmao, you're not understanding my point are you pal? my point is benning and canucks couldve took the advantage of the shortened season

Hahah. No. That wasn’t your point.

Holy overpayment

the kid hasn't even played a full season in the nhl

you joined the thread and not knowing anything about the player, you googled him to find less than 82 games the last couple seasons, assuming he wasn’t always in the line up.

Now ur trying to say it’s this completely other point and it’s very transparent. Give it up

one UFA year gets the big bucks
pretty solid value and term, too bad they couldnt get all 8 years, something like this wouldve avgd 8.25, shouldve been affordable..

I also like the timing insofar as the end aligns with OEL's money coming off the books

Elite offensively, replacement level defensively.

You sign this deal hoping the offense remains while hopefully improving in his own zone.

No, you sign this deal hoping the team develops around him. He needs a partner who can cover for him while does his thing.

Its a good contract and 6 to 8 is just a difference of couple of years. Not a huge deal unless you see Hughes be a 10 million dollar player during the years he has signed.

I think he will be fine defensively as he improves that side of his game while I agree that he will need a shutdown D man beside him to balance the pairing. Someone like a Tanev or Larsson

If that's what it ends up being, I think it's pretty fair.

Dahlin the most recent comparison is 3x6m but ends at 7.2... Even just applying 7.2m to Dahlin for 3 more years (which in reality is highly likely to be more). It would bring Dhalin to $6.6m AAV for 6yrs.
