Confirmed with Link: [VAN/NYR] JT Miller, Erik Brannstrom, & Jackson Dorrington for Filip Chytil, Victor Mancini, and 1st 2025 (Top-13 Protected, Unprotected after)

Its not really the same comparison.

1) Miller has a NMC which limits the value in return. It appears he would only waive to like 3 teams, Rangers, Canes or Devils. Canes were out. Probably only down to Rangers.

2) Miller is 32 years old this year compared to Horvat 27 at the time of the trade. Thats a huge deal

3) They were forced to trade him with everything thats going on basically... which also limits the return.
All true.

They still didn't need to settle for this return.

Chytil is a #3C when healthy.

Rutherford was not kidding when he said "we might not even get a #2C back but..."

This is a pathetic return for a guy who is just 8 months removed from being a top 10 scorer in the NHL.

Well there it is. It’s ok… I like Mancini. I guess we get the 2026 1st unprotected if the Rangers’ pick is top 13 this year? Chytil I just hope the guy can stay healthy. No chance we keep Rangers and our 1st I assume?

Yep. Don't get why people are pissed or surprised at the return. JT Miller did not hold much trade value. 1st + Chytil was as good as could be reasonably expected.

I've said many times before, there were too many red flags on Miller. He's 32, long contract, NMC, known toxic malcontent. Not exactly a bidding war.

Which is a good thing. You get him during his prime for fair market value or lower, and moving forward, 8 million is the new 6 million given the salary cap numbers released this morning.
6 million is still gonna hurt if the player is done and dusted. see: loui eriksson

that's the whole issue with Miller. He's 32 years old. point production has plummeted for many a player that age. NYR has an example of a player the same age and on the same contract as Miller in Zibanejad who, as I recall, no-one here wanted to touch with a thousand foot pole, even with a raising cap

Everything about JT Miller is a risk. Trading him is a risk. He was an all star with 100 points last season. Keeping him is a risk for the reasons we all know.

Take your pick which part is more risky.

Miller is not a 100pt player anymore - I doubt he'll ever come close to that again. Still a 1C for a 2/3C plus a 1st and cap space.

Lots left to be figured out. The window is closed though - if it ever was open.

Chytil has some good upside when he's healthy so it's a big gamble in that regard. Before his concussions he was showing top 6 potential at minimum.

Hard disagree. Hughes is a much better captain and leader than Horvat ever was and I still think his contract is putrid even with the rising cap.
Im glad Hughes is the captain and that doesn't happen without the Horvat trade, but Miller was always a ticking time bomb and you could've seen the writing on the wall and have gotten much higher value for him at the time Horvat was traded

Just don't understand why these guys couldn't get over the rift. Completely f***ed over this team's contending window. Petey better go on a heater now.

We badly need to add a couple of core forwards this summer to replace Miller and Boeser. I'll reserve judgement on these moves until after draft/free agency.

Hes never really gotten the opportunity in NY.

His average ice time is 14 minutes per game. Hes got one less 5v5 point than Miller this season.

Its not like he plays a lot and can never score. Not saying hes going to be an all star, but theres some undeveloped potential there.

Also remember, yesterdays price isnt todays price.

8 months ago doesnt mean anything. Its what hes going to do today and moving forward.

if that is return, then don't trade him, its not rocket science you moron (pointing at the canucks GM)

Very disappointing return. I get that we have been backed into a corner but the team should never have let the situation get this bad by waiting it out. If the issues are as bad as they clearly are given this trade, you need to make this decision at least 3 months ago if not over the summer. If they're not as bad as they seem, wait it out until the trade deadline. I feel they couldn't have timed this worse.

Not going to dance on any graves here.

We literally let these players into our living rooms every couple of days and so emotional ties are strong and emotional responses are high.

I think we made the absolutely right choice and I think time will show that.

I know the cap is going up and Miller's contract will look better relative to the cap.

But he's a heavy and laborious skater. He doesn't float across the ice like Hughes or Niedermayer, it's all hard push with him and I'm not sure that ages well.

The dressing room stuff has been talked about to death. I'm disappointed in how Petey has looked this year, but I think there are mitigating circumstances and I think he's the kind of guy that IF you trade him you then spend 10 years trying to find another one.

I'm very hopeful we keep him.

-

I like Chytil. The injuries are a risk, but if it's any consolation, if he has his career ended then he's on LTIR and then we have even more cap space (which I hope doesn't happen).

I don't know a lot about Mancini but apparently he's a decent prospect. Maybe this means NO MORE DESHARNAIS!!!!!

The first can be relayed into another center, a D. Or we can keep it.

The conditions on the pick are amazing too. Like, I'm really not convinced the Rangers have the horses to be a contender anymore. I think they're delusional about where and what they are and I think they will crash soon.

If they finish 12th worst, then we have an unprotected pick in the McKenna draft and then, who knows?

It's not sexy and some of it requires research. I think a lot of us have to figure out who Mancini really is.

I also like that we traded him out of conference, and to a team that I think is making a stupid mistake in acquiring another 32 year old.

If it was the Avs, there was a chance that they bully the conference with their two headed monsters for 3 years before Miller regresses.

On the Rangers? I think they're kind of f***ed. They may make the 2nd round this year, but I think they're a setting sun.

-

I think what we do with the space, possibly the pick, and time will show this to be a good move.

Even if for some, there needs to be a period of mourning first.

I agree, I think he has potential based on his offensive game to be a decent 2C. His defensive game may need work though and Toch may not like him

Next moves should involve:
-Selling off every UFA.
-Seeing if anyone is willing to take on DeBrusk, Myers, Desharnais, etc
-Trading Pettersson after he fails to rebound and has zero excuses left.

What I expect:
-Aquilini to throw a tantrum
-JR/Allvin to mortgage the future to salvage this shit
-Team to moronically spend to the cap the next 2 summers.
-Team to finish bottom 10.

LOL why not just trade Quinn Hughes as well. What did DeBrusk and Myers do to deserve to be traded?

i dont get why jt miller has low value. as long as hes on a contending team hes not going to have any problems. and hes going to be primed in for another 2 years of beast mode. he was the player that would of got many teams over the hump.. they should be fighting over him. he has high value

Oh that will absolutely happen at some point.

This team needs to have a shot of winning before Quinn Hughes becomes a UFA. This team is so far and away from that now. The forward group is being led by Elias Pettersson now.

Accepting the adage that the team getting the best player in the trade wins, this isn't all that bad.

Miller (32)
Branstrom (25)
Dorrington

for
Chytil (25)
Mancini (22)
Protected 1st
+3M cap space

They got younger, a middle 6 centre, a right shot D-man whose floor appears to be 3rd pairing NHL D man. The Canucks are less competitive today from a pure talent perspective but in two years the value of the pieces will most likely favour the Canucks.

And not having the last 3 years of the Miller contract is significant value.
