NESN UPDATE - NESN’s Jack Edwards announces retirement

When I was a kid, I asked my dad why he always sounded like he had marbles in his mouth.

When I was older, I put two and two together.

If you are suggesting he was under the influence, Derek got sober long before he took the Bruins color job. Now were the years of abuse the possible reason for his speech? Could be. But he was most definitely sober. Bobby saw to that.

Since it is this close to the season I doubt NESN has a replacement for Jack. I just hope he's well enough to do it, there were times when he was really off his game.
While not knowing what the issue is, if it is aphasia, my Dad was able to improve once he started speech therapy. Long term it is still a losing battle but can be managed to a certain extent. Again, we don't know what is/was causing the problem. We always thought it was micro strokes at the beginning because it is so similar to how some people speak after having a stroke but a scan showed no damage.

If they have him back in a different capacity, I almost guarantee he will make fun of himself for how he was starting to sound calling pbp. That's why he's the man, apart from how angry he makes other fanbases, and a certain niche of Bruins fans who are too self-serious and pretentious to appreciate the gilded show of a local broadcast.

One of the very best to ever do it.

For me Jack is part legend, part cringe. But I can certainly get why some absolutely love him and some absolutely despise him. He’s polarizing.

But judging by those here in this forum who don’t like him, I don’t think what makes them feel that way is their pretentiousness or being too “self serious”….it’s just their preference man. Different strokes is all.

Any number of people could do the play by play. The announcers aren’t that important to me because I can see the game on TV for myself. They’re just there to provide a little insight. If we were talking about radio, that’s a different story.

What I’m most concerned about is Jack’s health. It’s obvious to everyone that something is not right. Whatever is wrong, I pray he is getting the care he needs to live as well as possible.

Early years Jack Edwards was great to listen to. Can't say the same about him today. I could do without the weird rants and tangents he goes on.

Or maybe we like our broadcasters to actually broadcast the frigging game, instead of playing whacky characters or ignoring the play-by-play for his clown shoe antics.

So if you’re not on board with Jack Edwards, you are self-serious and/or pretentious.

Interesting judgment.

I am still waiting for someone, anyone to show
me a link or verifiable source showing NESN is considering moving on. So much speculation and implication without any actual information from what I can see.

This is where I am. When the puck is dropped, call the game.

Very few PBP people do that anymore.

During the winter classic I counted 13 times that there was a shot on goal with the announcers yakking away about who-knows-what. And I only watched the first 2 periods!

Jack does the same thing, as does Brick.

Winter classic is a network production. Completely different audience.

There are many excellent PBP guys doing hockey for NHL teams.

It's been like 3 months with no indication from NESN that there's any change to the broadcast crew. And you know Jack isn't isolated from all the chatter about this. 99% chance he lurks here and on twitter and has read all the complaints, so maybe during the summer he rested his voice or did some speech therapy or something and he'll be better in the fall. We'll see.

Yeah, seems way too close to the season starting to make a change. Also, unless whatever has been hampering Jack has worsened, hard to believe they wouldn't let him call the games in the historic centennial season.

Despite the claims of some, Jack is a professional and obviously takes a great amount of pride in his work. Wouldn't surprise me at all if he is working on things over the summer as you suggest he might be. It would be great if he comes back better than he was last season.

He'll probably be the only person affiliated with the Boston Bruins who will have a better performance in 2023-24 than 2022-23.

I think the optic perception of objectivity has invaded, and pervaded, the sport way too much. There is something to be said for clouding the excitement of a game, which is what it is, not a longitudinal experiment with rote fairness in analysis. I don't care about Tanner Pearson's zone entry metrics, I want to hear about what Pavel Zacha thinks of a meatball sub, personally, and I want that facetiously analogized to a saucer pass while I watch the game from my couch.

Not to speak out of school, but I also don't think you should be allowed to post a graph or chart without contextualizing or parsing it within your post, adequately and summarily. The misperception of comprehensiveness on the part of popular analytics has culturally degraded a lot of the fun of the sport.

I work in analytics, btw.

Does it have to be these two extremes. Can I settle for a Dave Goucher?

I don’t want a statistical nerd pumping stats the entire game the same way I don’t want Jack edwards drooling over the sound of his own voice while he spews out his 15th metaphor of the first period.

Jack's definitely cooked, no doubt. I am speaking to the outspoken scorn of the style and the culture behind it.

Im not surprised youre surprised.
Youre not from here.

Polls also have Marchand as most hated player. It is what it is.
I am from here and I am surprised by the support for Edwards. I don't think he's good at his job and it takes away from the viewing experience. There's a reason I watch the neutral broadcast in the playoffs over NESN.

to each his own.

the point s the person questioning is from Toronto. What else would one expect. Here on Bruins Board.

Why do you think I’m from Toronto? And how is that even relevant to the discussion? I hate the Sabres but I still appreciate Rick Jeanneret.
