Well, he does need to play, so if you have him as the 7th, AHL it is and call him up when the injury happens.
Yep.

I also believe both Thomson and JBD will be waivers eligible next season. They'll have the inside track to be the 7th defenseman. We should roll with Brann and Hamonic as the 5th and 6th d-men, and the better of Thomson/JBD will stick around at the 7th defenseman, and the other one goes on waivers.

However, if Kleven truly blows our doors off in camp, solidifying himself as a 6th defenseman, I could see him stick around, and bumping Hamonic down to the 7th defenseman. But Kleven would really have to force the issue, similar to the way Pinto did last year.

Maybe another team was after that pick

Never thought about that, totally possible

He might get the Brannstrom treatment no matter how good he is given his waiver status. Lots of ups and downs, and never ending debate here about how the Senators are doing the right/wrong thing

I wonder if they keep Chychrun on the LS and move either Chabot or Sandy over.
Given Chychrun misses 10-20 games /yr I’d rather have a steady RS and have Kleven or Branny move into the top 4 on the LS.
More natural that way IMO, no need to move a player unfamiliar with that side part way through or off and on.

From the sounds of it Zub and Sandy will be our shut down pair, and so we’re likely to see more of Chabot and Chychrun like we saw before injuries.

If there is a new coach that could obviously change.

Would you be surprised if he cracks the starting line up next season? ;)

Yes. Once everyone is healthy he'll have a lot of competition. Also, it's a very small sample size. We've seen this before many times where young players, or veterans (Joseph for example) play well is short bursts. The key for young players is to stay consistently solid.

I like the idea of him getting loads of important minutes in the AHL but if his current play is an indication of what he can bring consistently and shows it in camp I think he forces the teams hand.

I never have an issue when a player who deserves to be in the NHL skips the minors. We could use that bit of good fortune.

If Brannstrom is back and Kleven makes the team we'll have 5 LHD in the lineup.

I know guys can play their offside, but it will be interesting to see how we haddle it.

It will be interesting to see how the Senators manage pairings next season. One of the issues after Chychrun arrived was all the experimentation trying to figure that out. Normally you get a guy and slot him into the hole you were trying to fill, but it wasn't so simple with 3 guys on the left all deserving big minutes. Would have been better to sort that out in training camp or early on in the season, which they'll be able to do next year.

How it gets handled by this place...once there's clarity in the DeBrincat situation, the next round of endless debate will be: should we trade Chabot for a middle of the road RHD with a smaller cap hit since he's a luxury we can't afford and need to get better depth? Incited by the media with nothing to talk about all summer.

Don’t think there’s a reason to have him in the nhl full time. Have him be on the first pair in Belleville. Hamonic can play bottom pair.

Agreed 100%.

We want to develop his game especially his offensive game, loads of minutes down in the AHL will do wonders for his growth.

Given Sens don’t have a pick in the top 3 rounds…thoughts on Kleven to Arizona for Yotes 2nd (38oa)?

Lol, no thank you. Kleven's worth more than 2nd to the Sens. He is a keeper as a potential mid-pairing, physical defenceman with a blast from the point.

He played solid making his debut for the Sens in March.

Even if the Sens felt there was someone they liked at that spot, we're basically just kicking the can down the road.

What Kleven is on track to become is the sort of guy we don't really have in excess. Plus we need him now, not in a few more years.

At the moment Ott will need to move on from another defenceman for Kleven to be in the lineup next yr. IMO Brannstrom would be the odd man out if they want Kleven in their lineup & at the moment anyway there is no indication of that. He does have the size & mobility they need more of on the backend, without him they are rather small & soft on D. I think JBD & Hamonic sharing the bottom 6/7 spot could work out with Kleven playing the 5th LD spot. Contracts & the numbers game could play against it though as it has in the past.

Chabot - Zub
Sanderson - Chychrun
Kleven - JBD/Hamonic

I like Kleven and Branny as a third pair. Branny went through a lot of shit to get to where he is. Up and down. First pair to 7th guy. Left and right side. PK and PP at different times. He could be a good partner. Especialy if Kleven is up and down between the Ottawa and Belleville.

Branny keeps getting underrated. Yeah, he’s small, but he can game. Don’t the advanced stats support that? And he looks good doing it.

He can aldo handle top-4 minutes. Given how injury prone this D squad is, he’s needed.

I’d be shocked if at least one of Chabot, Chychrun, or Zub aren’t injured within the first 15 games of the season.
