Kleven is another guy that Ottawa has needed for some time, a big mobile D who can hit & has a bomb from the point. They are not moving him but will look to get him inot their lineup as soon as he is ready & he already looks ready to me.

Branny amd Kleven. That is the depth of playoff teams.

Yea, I don't see it ... they are both left shots & while Brannstrom could be ahead of him at the moment, I don't see that lasting long. And they have enough right shot D that they should be able to fill all 3 RD spots. I think Brann at some point soon will get traded, we'll see.

I think Kleven will make the Ottawa Sens roster for opening night next year and will play with the Sens in Ottawa all season.
If you are saying you believe Kleven will be one of the 6 or 7 best DMen in our organization to start the season, I wouldnt push back on that. But I dont think he will start the year with us

Who are these RHD we have enough of?

Zub,

I guess we could gamble on JBD and Thomson?

Zub, Hamonic, JBD, Thomson, Guennette & it's most likely Chychrun will play the right side.
Hamonic is a UFA, we'd have to sign him first, Guinette, JBD and Thomson are all completely unproven.

Brannstrom may very well get traded eventually but you're counting your chickens before they hatch, until someone steps up and proves otherwise, we need Brannstrom right now.

I don't think so, they may even go on the open market & pick up another RD or make a trade for one. We are talking about a 3rd pairing D which are easily replaced every summer. They need to do something with JBD given he is eligible for waivers next yr & will most likely be on the roster since he was also defenceman of the yr in Belleville last season. He also seemed to do quite well playing with Kleven last season although a small sample. I just don't think we can win in the playoffs with Brannstrom on the backend, he's just not good enough offensively or defensively.

So, Brannstrom is an experienced D that can play both sides, can kill penalties on your second unit, step into the top 4, even the top pair when injuries hit, has offensive upside even if it hasn't shown up in his production lately, and will likely get extended for under 2 mil, that's not something you can readily find every offseason.

Needing to do something with unproven mid to low upside guys like JBD and Thomson is one thing, but Brannstrom is currently the better player with better upside, you need 7 to 8 D at the NHL level on opening night, and this year is a make the playoffs year, not a try out the new guy and see what you have in him, year.

Heck, there's a really good chance Kleven ends up in Belleville due to his waiver status. He needs to be head and shoulders ahead of the competition to make the team,

Id be very surprised if kleven makes the team out of camp. Mainly just because of a contract standpoint, they wont let JBD get to waivers so hes in over kleven automatically. We can also pencil in chabot chych zub and sandy (Which leave 2 spots). I think we will sign hamonic so that leaves the spot between branny and kleven.

we have 1: a proven nhl ready d whose a bit undersized but has shown great defensive metrics and a great eye test. He also has great offense abilities and is one of the best players on the team at that first breakout pass.

2: A big defensemen who can throw his body around but is not yet proven at the nhl level. Best case scenario for him to project into a 3-4 defense.

To me its a very easy call!

However part of me wants branny to get traded just so he can get away from all these negative fans and have his career grow into a top 1-2 D who excels on the pp

You may be right & I agree due to contracts Kleven could start in Belleville but I don't see all these positives people mention when they describe Brannstrom. He occassionally has a good game, but just as often has crappy games otherwise he would be higher up in the lineup. You mention he can play both sides & can step into the top 4 yet he still plays on the 3rd pairing & is behind ... well ... everyone else on D with the exception of JBD & Kleven who I already prefer over him.

It wouldn't surprise me if he is still here next season, but it also wouldn't surprise me if he gets moved especially if they bring in a better D. I think our defence is too soft for the playoffs & need at least another tougher D besides Hamonic who I think will be re-signed, at least for a yr. If Hamonic is re-signed which I think he will be that puts Brannstrom into the 6th spot which IMO either Kleven or JBD could replace. I'm not even sure he would return much in any trade right now, what do you think his value is on the open market?

Kleven may lose out in the numbers game as he is safe from waivers, but some seasoning in the AHL will do him no harm. He needs to play minutes to grow his game and bring his physicality and offence to the pros, BSens is the perfect place for that. Ottawa is supposed to be challenging for a playoff spot next season, so will likely look to lean on experienced NHLers.

They won't like losing JBD on waivers, so like Peter Parker Kelly before I see him staying at least as part of the 22-23 men roster.

Both Thomson and JBD are on waivers if not on the team, Sens aren't sending them both down for a double whammy, though I think only 1 would be claimed.

I could see them being traded for picks. That's what I would do anyway.
I suspect JBD is kept up as a 7th D, Thomson may be traded or waived and Kleven starts in Belleville.

Alot depends on if we sign a UFA, but the way I see it, right now Brannstrom is our 5th D on the depth chart. He's shown on more than one occassion he can log 20 mins a night, and can play both special teams if you need him to. He showed a lot of improvement over the season, and he won't break the bank.

I figure we eventually will move on from him but until we actually have a better option I don't see him going anywhere

He might be ready; we shall have to wait until preseason in October to find out.

I would love to see you as a GM. Half the team would be giant monsters, 1/4 would be kids with less than 20 games experience and the other 1/4 would be kids in the minors who haven't even been drafted yet.

But we would get skated around ;)
I doubt that we have plenty of very fast skaters on this team & if Formenton comes back he's another. I just don't think you can win in the playoffs with Brannstrom on the backend & I would much rather have Kleven & Hamonic as my 3rd pair. They make our defence much harder to play against.
