Kleven is a lot closer to being NHL ready than a lot of people thought. Extending Brannstrom and Hamonic and fitting Kleven in and timing will all play a part.
Kleven is our best prospect D right now. IMO he is ahead of JBD, Guenette and Thomson.
Is Kleven a bottom pair shutdown D or is he more than that. He could very well be more than that or he could realistically become more than that.

As of now I'd have no issues starting the year with as our D corps
Chabot Zub
Sanderson Chychrun
Brannstrom Kleven

Will Hamonic sign as a 7th D? To me he clearly can still play and he offers intangibles.
If he signs it could push Kleven to the AHL. I don't see them using Kleven, JBD et al as 7th D.
If Hamonic is in the starting 6 they will use a guy like Heatherington.
He looks much closer, no doubt.

I really would like to see him in the AHL for a year though, seems to be the most ideal. Letting him play 20 min in all situations would be great for his development.

Also let's us keep JBD or Thomson as a 7D.

5 spots on the blueline are locked up. I'm fine to let Kleven, JBD and Thomson fight it our for the 6th and 7th. Guennette will be getting called up as well. Let these guys battle it out for 3rd pairing minutes or dominate in Smellville. No need for Hamonic or Holden.

I believe the Sens told Holden that he won't be back with us next year.

I would bring Hamonic back in the Holden role and at around Holden's salary, but suspect he's too good to settle for that.

Dorion is probably going to want a veteran in the mix, whether they slot in at 6, 7 or 8. Hamonic is likely better than the alternative.

If the Sens view Kleven as being an NHL player, I see no reason not to alternate him and Hamonic as the #6. There will be injuries that will require both in the lineup at the same time. Kleven's used to an NCAA schedule so keeping his games down wouldn't be the worst thing.

Assen na yo!

No way kleven plays in the AHL next year.. he's too solid. He'll make our starting 6 no problem.
I think the problem we'll face is that we'll want a veteran as the 6th - like Hamonic. So, starting Kleven in the AHL becomes a luxury that we will have.

Absolutely. But it's not a problem, we finally have enough depth to let guys develop in the AHL so they can iron out the kinks.

Kleven was a lot better than I - or many other posters - thought he would be to start, and I wouldn't hesitate to have him on the opening day roster next season. But he could work on a few things to polish his game until Ottawa inevitably suffers a few injuries on the blueline and need a call up. Fantastic luxury especially considering not to long ago we were playing guys like Zaitsev or calling up Larsson or Heatherington to sub for injuries. These are good team problems, glad to see we're getting to that point

Yeah, I should have been clearer, I meant the problem with penning Kleven into the lineup is the vet presence required.

He's behind Chabot, Sanderson, Chychrun, Zub and Brannstrom. JBD and Thomson are waiver eligible. That's 7 D,

I'm not saying he won't be one of our top 6 d in camp, but if it's even debatable who of JBD, or Kleven should suit up, waiver/contract status will decide

He needs to be a clear cut above the competition, otherwise they'll do what's best for his development.

I can't imagine his biggest supporters believing he would have looked as good as he has.

When I think of his game now compared to what it was in the WJHC, it seems his development exploded.

He has a confidence and poise with the puck that I wouldn't have expected at this point at all. Major strides there. His mobility while a known plus seems even better as he is doing it against NHL players.

Have to admit I thought he was a year or 2 away from being positive contributor but I won't be surprised if he starts with the team next season. I would expect contracts, waivers, etc...may play a role and he finds himself logging big minutes in Belleville but he will be on a regular before the end of next season.

Huge win, if the early returns are an indication.

Traded up for Soogard in the previous draft, that seems to be doing more than fine.

Yeah, every team whiffs on these deals more than they hit a homer. Most fans tend to remember the negative. Like the JBD pick, while being the reverse as we traded down, is constantly revisited because of Miller's success, but I don't mind those deals. If they wanted Miller they would've drafted him and they figured the guy they wanted would be available later on. It didn't work out for the best, but they could've taken JBD with their original pick and not got a 2nd out of it.

The only deal they ever made where I was really critical about was with the Brown pick. I was ok picking him or Chychrun at the time, but why trade up 1 pick? Only explanation I've ever theorized was that NJ was split between McLeod and Brown so their GM settled the argument.

Sens had Brown in their top xxx, in a tier of his own. The difference between a guy in the 3rd and a guy they at the time perceived as in a tier higher than annoying remaining is minimal.

But if Jersey really really wanted Brown, they wouldn't have traded the pick. That's what I don't get, like how did that conversation go down between GMs?

I don't think he's too good for the AHL and I certainly wouldn't pencil him into the lineup just yet, but he's looking extremely impressive.

I'd like to see him start the year in Belleville as their #1 defenseman and get time on the powerplay to develop his offensive game.

My sentiments exactly, and put me in the group of pleasantly surprised at how more polished he is. Especially in the puck handling department.

Had kleven laid any of his signature open ice hits yet in the nhl? Or even tried? Im guessing he will try introducing that to his game as he gets more comfortable with the league and all that
Agreed, I think he’s trying to highlight his D game, keep things simple, and not do anything that might cost the team.

He wants to stick and so he looks to be ultra focused on his game. I. Er we’ll see more physicality as he gets more comfortable and some things become second nature.

Sandy said that he himself always focuses on his D first with a new team before he starts introducing different elements to his game. We’ve only just started to see what he can do offensively.

Would you be surprised if he cracks the starting line up next season? ;)

Dorion was right in all the praise he was giving him prior to his first game.

Alot of people were surprised that Dorion had Kleven along with Greig and Sogaard as our untouchable prospects. Now we can see why.
