for many many years, being reassigned did not prevent the player from playing an NHL preseason game afterwards
we haven't seen that the last few seasons tho.
not sure is its a formal restriction, or teams just focused on figuring out their opening day roster

Thing is I feel like gallant was gonna give Jones that spot pretty much no matter what happened

I think the D alignment was pretty well set coming in. It was Jones spot to lose. Seeing Robertson one more game was going to make no difference. How great could he play in one game that would change their minds?
Let him go to Hartford and play regularly so he's ready when needed. People worry more about what "they want to see" that what makes sense for the team. Most of the extra guys brought in are just bodies to practive against.

Idk why people thinks Robertson got hosed. He is not better than Jones. He’s probably better than Hajek but any of us could be better than Hajek

This is also true. We used to see guys from the Hartford camp appear in preseason games. Believe the same happened in baseball--guys assigned to the minor league camp would still randomly appear in Spring Training games after being assigned. I think it is/was permitted because none of the preseason stuff is "official" action.
Yeah, look, I'm a big Robertson fan and always have been, but getting one preseason game instead of two isn't some kind of slap in the face and it isn't going to inhibit his development. He was "pretty solid" last year for a rookie pro, but my take then was that he clearly needed to spend time this season in the AHL, and I haven't seen or heard anything since to make me believe that's no longer the case and he's ready for the NHL now.
And, honestly, even if it ends up he is ready, and Jones/Hajek need to go, that will work itself out, too. I was livid a few years ago when Lindgren went down despite outplaying Hajek, and that took all of like 10 games to be corrected. I wasn't a huge fan of giving that spot to Lundkvist last season, and while he got more burn (as a better prospect, he should have), that whole thing eventually worked itself out, too, when he and Schneider flipped.
Chances are Robertson will go down and have a nice season in the AHL, see some action in the NHL throughout the year, and be ready to really push come this time next year. That's the likely scenario, IMO. But, if Jones sucks, Jones will go down and they'll bring Robertson up, and he'll fight with Hajek for minutes. NBD.
They have had plenty of looks in practice scrimmages. He was meh in his one game. Go to Hartford and get to work.
The Rhode Island trip looks to be the regulars, the bubble players (trying to trade 1-2) and those who definitely figure in the future. (e.g. Othmann, Cuylle, Garand)

OFFICIAL: #NYR cut Training Camp roster by 8 players: Turner Elson, Karl Henriksson, Patrick Khodorenko, Olof Lindbom, Brandon Scanlin + C.J. Smith are assigned to @WolfPackAHL. Brennan Othmann has been returned to Flint of OHL + Adam Edstrom has been assigned to Rogle BK of SHL.

Stinks for Othmann for now, but he should look at this as probably making the team right out of camp next year, and never seeing a day in the AHL. Go crush it kid.

Don’t see the point in sending Othmann away so early.
I have no delusions of him making the team. But why not keep him up as long as possible to give him extra work with the big squad before sending him to Flint? Would seem to be better for his development.

After tonight’s game they likely waive Tinordi , Domingue , Gauthier
We will see if Vesey or Bartkowski get deals but they may still end up on waivers soon
I think the whole 4th line tonight is sent down too

Who said Robertson got hosed? He played one preseason game. Can we get a look at him more than once? That's all. The Rangers played 4 preseason games in 5 nights this week. There were plenty of opportunities.
I thought Cuylle looked awful against Boston. He is getting another game tonight. He isn't making the Rangers roster next week.
Because the big squad is about to start tuning up for the regular season. I think AV did this bullshit of keeping around big rosters and dicking around in training camp/preseason instead of getting ready for the season to start, and it was annoying every time (and his teams often started real slow)
Doesn't matter if "we" get to look at him, the Rangers coaching staff are the ones that matter. We're not making any roster decisions here. They have seen enough of him in practice, scrimmages, and the game he got.
Cuylle is probably being sent down after tonight, they need bodies for the back to back games

So little has changed during this Camp, so far.
About the only drama is whether Vesey and/or Rydahl grab F spots 11,12,13, or 14 from Carpenter, Reaves, Hunt, Gauthier.
And w Rydahl waiver exempt, no urgency re him.
Bart likely wont get NHL deal, didn't have 1 last year, and if he does, likely waived to demote anyway, but Pack already would already have Welinski, Tinordi, maybe Hillman, as vet D...
I always hated this. It felt like we’d get to the final 2 preseason games and still have no idea what the roster was supposed to look like.

I would have liked to see Edstrom and Rydahl on the same line. Maybe it would have worked. Both can skate big and defensively responsible
sad that #37 scrub that played last night is still with the Rangers. He is awful

We’re not making the cuts, so we don’t “need” to see him more. Those making the decisions feel he’s better off with the AHL team. Same as Othmann and his junior team.

waiver eligible guys cannot get demoted before clearing waivers
that's why Elson, Smith were waived yesterday, and then demoted today
Welinski (as well as Gettinger) were waived by NYR earlier today, likely to be assigned tomorrow
