Apparently, Robertson impressed yesterday.

As far as players who need to flash in this short window, Matthew Robertson looked smooth and confident in the scrimmage, setting up Panarin with a beautiful seam pass from the point for a scoring chance.

And in the practice group Rydahl, the 27-year-old who’s in North America for the first time, did not look out of place. A good shot in drills and good skating ability. If he doesn’t make the team out of camp and chooses to stick it out in the AHL, he’d likely be the first call-up if the Rangers need a center. He looked capable on his first day.

The line designations matter. Where are people pulling this idea from that magically Gallant is going to evenly distribute ice time? The top two lines are going to get between 18 and 20 minutes guaranteed. The "Kid Line" will be lucky to surpass 14 minute range, most nights it'll be between 11 and 14 minutes. On nights when he feels like it that line will get 11 minutes max. When you take into consideration special teams it's even worse. None of the players on line 3 are going to get PP1 time. PP2 always gets junk time at the end of the power play. And it's doubtful any will get on the PK. This is how Gallant has always operated. Why do people think that will suddenly change?

If Lafreniere is kept on line 3 it will be another year wasted. He should be getting top six minutes in every situation. PP, PK. He should be developed into one of the go-to guys on the team. He was a first overall pick. Not some 2nd round swing at the fences. On every other team in the league this is what would be happening.
It's DAY TWO of training camp, my guy. Take a chill pill.

In regards to Hajek/Jones, I have no problem with Gallant showing Hajek the opportunity to start camp. He's the "veteran" of the two. Say what you want about Hajek but he was in limbo with the team all last season and then some. He's likely worked his tail off this summer like every other player wanting to improve. He's paid his dues to at least get a good look.

The thing about all of this is us fans are sitting here looking at lineups and we make our assumptions on players based on the games we watch on TV and whatever other media we are fed. We aren't sitting in meetings, coaching and basically living with all of these guys like family for 8-9 months of the year.

Hajek has been at almost every practice, road trip and team function over the past 3 years. When hes up in the press box not playing, he is out of sight and mind for the fanbase. But he is an individual, a real person who you have to look in the eye and try to develop just like everyone else.

Its just as much about respect, even if he may not win the job. Jones will have to take that spot from him, and it's very possible he can, and will. But you extend the look to the guy with seniority in this regard and for all intensive purposes is at the same level with the other 2 or 3 guys fighting for the 6th-7th spot
I think you can have this line of thinking when it comes to putting Sammy Blais on the first line as well. He is a guy that came to new team and had to sit out an almost entire season due to injury. This is Gallant showing that Blais should have confidence and that he is respected by the organization. It makes his first day back less stressful.

I agree with this. And I think his teammates and coaches notice this too. I happen to think Blais being on the first line to start the camp is a nice move by Gallant. Guy played a handful of games, ended up injured for almost a full calendar year. Got screwed out of earning a higher salary. Worked his butt off. Tried to hang around the team. It's a nice acknowledgement by Gallant to start him in a place that lets him know that he's still a valued member of the team. Plus, it allowed GG to avoid starting off on the wrong foot by putting one of the kids on line 1 while keeping the other two on line 3. Keep em together for now and make adjustments as needed. But that kid line if kept together is going to be fire.
I just made this same comment before I saw yours.

I don't think Rydahl is going to leave if he goes down. He's on a one-way.
You know, if the CBA allowed for a higher ELC minors salary based on draft position, maybe more kids would be okay with playing in the AHL rather than going back home to the KHL/SHL/Liiga.

Laf, a 1st overall pick, has an 80k salary in the minors. As a first overall, he was unlikely to ever see the AHL, but not every pick is ready right away. 80k isn't much of an incentive when players can make 2 or 3 times as much playing overseas.

Honestly, one of the best things that could happen to this team is Hajek turning himself into a nice, steady, bottom-pairing d-man. He has the skating and puck moving skills. He just needs to make quicker decisions and gain strength. In terms of team needs, a cheap, young, bottom pairing d-man wouldn't be a bad thing

Kreider has been doing this for the past couple years. How did Vince not realize this?

I think Vince was kind of a casual Hockey fan before getting this gig. I remember him making a big deal about one of the Rookies taking the "rookie lap" as if it was something that didn't literally always happen.

  • Haha

So if Vesey-Rydahl-Hunt is the current 5th line and Goodrow hasn't been skating- who was rotated with Carpenter and Reaves? Gauthier?
