Ritchie-Matthews-Marner and Bunting-Tavares-Nylander seem like they will be the top 6 on opening night, barring something unforeseen. Spezza, Mikheyev, Kerfoot, Kampf, and Kase should be locks for the bottom 6 with Semyonov, Simmonds, Robertson, Engvall, Ho-Sang, and Brooks in the mix for the last spot.

For defense, the top 4 is pretty obvious and Liljegren/Dermott/Sandin will fight it out of the other two spots. Menell is probably the #8, but I doubt he'd clear waivers

Holl is a very good #4 dman, and has been a very good member of one of the better top-usage matchup D-pairings in hockey the past season and a half.
With respect you are completely wrong Holl would not even make well over half team defenses in NHL .. he is playing with Muzzy who should be a top 4 guy on Team Canada with Doughty .. Muzzy is only Leaf that truly deserves it .. and Canada would be much better off for it

With all due respect, you are incorrect.

Wonder if the guys going knew they aren't considered NHLers by the coach?
The have to dress a minimum number of NHLers in each preseason game, I think I read 8 if my memory serves me.

I highly doubt they mind obv but if Liljegren keeps playing great beside Muzzin I'll be plenty pissed if he doesn't make the team over Sandin who's a defensive liability and a turnover machine at this point in his development

Muzzy will not be making team Canada. He only made the team which was 8 years ago because Doughty and him had chemistry. This is team Canada not Lithuania

As for Holl, he's good where he is. He's not the best 4th D but not the worse either. There are Maybe 8-10 other #4 D in the league ahead of him

I think most of them do. There is a requirement that some NHLers play so I do think they will feel unconsidered.

Sounds like tomorrow's roster is going to be filled with guys lower in the line-up and on the bubble. Here's hoping Liljegren, Sandin and Robertson are in.

Why was Doughty the only dman that needed a chemistry partner?

Chris Kunitz who without playing with Sid and having great chemistry would never have played in the 2014 Olympics team

Muzzin is good but not team Canada good.

Rielly is the only leaf who should be on that team as a 5th-7th d-men imo

Name me the Canadian dmen that are better offensively and defensively than Muzzin at even strength.

I'll name them you won't agree so it's pointless.

Muzzin wasn't great last year in tough defensive matchups. Him and holls possession stats dropped when moving to the hardest competition for defense pairs

He also isn't an offensive d-men. He can make a solid zone pass but their are several more dynamic 5v5 offensive d-men on team Canada including Letang, Makar, and Theodore who have better natural puck moving abilities. 2 of those 3 guys didn't have as many high quality offensively capable wingers/centers as Muzzin had.

He's also not a great skater, and has been caught flat footed several times in his tenure with the leafs. Team canada has a series of capable high speed defenders they can rely on to not be at risk of being burned on a bad/offensive read like Muzzin would.

Team Canada has a younger and better Jake Muzzim who if healthy will be a tier above Jake. His name is Aaron Ekblad

Team canada should go with

Makar, Letang, Hamilton, Theodore, Rielly, Ekblad, Pietrangelo, Doughty

As their 8D with Rielly and Doughty on the outside unless they have big seasons leading up to the Olympics

Rielly could be replaced by a PP specialist who could be brought in should some of the main guys struggle
