Being an Ottawa home game, I could see them icing a pretty good lineup. Could be ugly
You think it will be as full of an Ottawa team as Edmonton iced last night against Seattle. By my count Edmonton only had 4, maybe 5 players missing that would be there on opening night.

With Leafs core 4 forwards not dressed nor their top 4 Dmen then this is essentially what is going to make up the rest of Leafs roster for this year for the most part.

Going to be interested to see how they perform on their own merits and not riding on the coattails of better players to get a better sense of what we have here.

Some good ideas there, but you're missing a shutdown line.

And since this line will produce zero offence, they are basically just there to eat up ice time while the top two lines rest? If the Leafs are going to go anywhere in the playoffs they need a 3rd line that can, ideally, shut down opposing stars and produce, or at the very least one of the two.

That line can, theoretically, both shut down and produce. Mikheyev and Kerfoot are both strong defensive players, Kase is a bit of a banger and can put the puck in the net.

Regardless, the Kampf line, whatever it may be, will be the shutdown line.

Nice chance for Robertson to show something.

Dermott still playing on the right side in this one, not the left. All three faves for the 5/6/7 spots on different pairs - though i think today is bigger for the other dmen, tbh.

yep if a team with 5 bottom 6 forwards and 2 bottom pair dmen dressed doesn't look great it clearly means we have no depth.

Not exactly setting up Dermott for success with Dahlstrom

So Engvall still hasn't played?

Hip injury I believe but did skate this morning.

Matthews-marner is our shutdown line. Both give Selke level 2 way play now. Kampf just ensures we don't get scored on much when the top 6 is resting.

Mik isn't a shutdown player. He's a speedy high effort that gives off the impression that he's strong defensively but lacks the defensive awareness of a true defensive stud. He himself wants to ditch this image of being a defence first guy via his trade request due to lack of offensive role.

The poster you are responding to, said Mik was strong defensively... and he is.

Not great news for Liljegren either that they keep using Dermott on his off side, presumably to force open a spot for Sandin.

Looks like D was decided before camp started as:
Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Holl
Sandin - Dermott

Most likely want to see if Dermott can cut it but there's a lot of variations they could do

Rielly-Brodie
Muzzin-Lily
Sandin-Holl

Rielly-Brodie
Muzzin-Holl
Sandin-Liljegren

He is not. Miks effort level and legs is what makes him useful. He's average at best when you break down the actual toolset. He has never shown strong defensive awareness to date.

Not sure why you're pointing out who I responded to. I touched on both Kampf and Mik because they mention both.

that’s simply not accurate
Yes because you say so. To date his body positioning along the boards is weak and he is below average using his stick along the boards. All traits strong defensive players have.

If he doesn't start finishing these chances his legs and effort produce, he's replaceable.

I don't think this is accurate. It's clearly a battle for those 3.

.

I can't tell if this is a joke or a serious comment. Perhaps you're just trying to make the point that their defence has improved, which it has. "Selke level" is way over the top.

Marner finished 10th in voting and Matthews on the cusp of entering that tier. Your comment is the real joke.

Sounds similar to "our toughness is our powerplay".

Sometimes I admire the ability to put the blue and white glasses on. I'm a skeptic by nature, I just don't have that ability. But if those guys are Selke level players, then a third of the league should be nominated for the Selke.

Two forwards who will be in the top 10 tier for Selke votes can't get a "selke level 2 way play" comment? They're on the same line. One of the hardest duos to play against excluding playoff failures. Some of you guys are so out of touch with the game, just sitting here spewing nonsense all day instead.

Well, they are good defensive players. But a shutdown line has a specific meaning. Your best offensive package will never be a shutdown line.

Yeah a 1/3 of the league gets selke votes right ?
