I am not sure Menell should be a full time option. He is a good #7 or maybe a sheltered #6 who can be an offensive specialist. If I am looking for that kind of guy, I think Duszak can fill the role. Short of Menell being a dominant offensive defenseman, the gap between Menell vs. Duszak is not really one that the Leafs should concern themselves to the point where they need to worry about losing Menell on waivers.

I also don't know if Menell really plays all that much for the Marlies. I can see this being more as a paper transaction for cap reasons than one that has Menell playing a lot of games for the Marlies. The Marlies have too many defensemen (especially offensive defensemen) as it is.

Gadjovich's skating is still messy for an NHL player. I would be surprised if he is claimed, especially with Joey Anderson also on waivers. The only thing in out favour for Anderson is his contract may ward off teams from claiming him. If he had one year left, he's probably claimed.
Even in the most sheltered role imaginable, Duszak will still get exposed defensively on a nightly basis. He is a bad defensive player at the AHL level, he would be one of the worst in the league if called-up. He could not handle that even in the pre-season.

Losing Menell is not the end of the world but he'd be a great asset to have if he does pass through. He's essentially what many are hoping Hollowell turns in to, so to have that as your next man in line behind Liljegren would be great insurance. Otherwise, there's really no player on that Marlies team that is ready to fill in.

I bet one get claimed, no clue which. Wouldn't be surprised if NJ said give us that back & claimed Anderson, they know him.

I'd be shocked if neither got claimed.

Menell was acquired for a conditional 7th with only preseason games being played since. Can't imagine his stock has changed so this will be a matter of team need and available supply of RD. Anderson was traded for Johnsson but hasn't seen much NHL action since then (1 GP?). A reunion with NJ could be possible. Contracts will always play a factor. We'll see what happens.

I definitely see the Leafs trading for a Bogosian type defensemen sometime into the season.

Still not sure why Joey Anderson was dropped in favor of Simmonds and/or Gabriel.

Not that I am suggesting he's gonna get picked but would have liked to see him get a fair shot. I have no doubt he can easily outplay Simmonds and possibly outhit him too

There seems to be this preferential treatment for players who are FA signed it seems

I thought Anderson would be a guy who was getting a legitimate look. He was hardly used. I figured they would groom him for Simmonds role/spot.

He does have a nice affordable 750k 2yr deal; he's shown he can pk at the NHL level and is suited for a more defensive bottom 6 role. I think that's at least of consideration to a lot of teams, biggest question is he good enough for a roster spot, he obviously wasn't for the Leafs. I think he has more suitors than Menell but Menell is the better player.

He's also only 23 but I doubt he has much of a ceiling as a player. And yea he only got 1 game in with the Leafs where he took a bad delay of game penalty, hopefully that helps; AHL stats weren't great with the Marlies either.

If for some reason Hakanpaa doesn't work out in Dallas I'd do Dermott for Hakanpaa straight up. Apparently Leafs had tried to sign him at 1.5m too.

How did Gabriel not get cut
He was clearly a worse hockey player than all the other forwards who were cut other than maybe Joey Anderson.

I recommend following Kyle on Twitter.

good look on who’s left and what our depth looks like on the Marlies and organization

Of course we'd say yes to that deal, he'd be great to have. He's out with a broken finger right now, but should be ready for regular season.

It's possible. A few might take issue with you though. They think that Liljegren is a lock at #6 position and Dermott/Sandin in and out for the #5 position.
