Even in the most sheltered role imaginable, Duszak will still get exposed defensively on a nightly basis. He is a bad defensive player at the AHL level, he would be one of the worst in the league if called-up. He could not handle that even in the pre-season.I am not sure Menell should be a full time option. He is a good #7 or maybe a sheltered #6 who can be an offensive specialist. If I am looking for that kind of guy, I think Duszak can fill the role. Short of Menell being a dominant offensive defenseman, the gap between Menell vs. Duszak is not really one that the Leafs should concern themselves to the point where they need to worry about losing Menell on waivers.
I also don't know if Menell really plays all that much for the Marlies. I can see this being more as a paper transaction for cap reasons than one that has Menell playing a lot of games for the Marlies. The Marlies have too many defensemen (especially offensive defensemen) as it is.
Gadjovich's skating is still messy for an NHL player. I would be surprised if he is claimed, especially with Joey Anderson also on waivers. The only thing in out favour for Anderson is his contract may ward off teams from claiming him. If he had one year left, he's probably claimed.
Losing Menell is not the end of the world but he'd be a great asset to have if he does pass through. He's essentially what many are hoping Hollowell turns in to, so to have that as your next man in line behind Liljegren would be great insurance. Otherwise, there's really no player on that Marlies team that is ready to fill in.
