He's been brutal, I'm just happy we got out of that noose of a contract

So I'm looking at it as dodged a bullet rather than we failed to get full value

I suppose.

F*** Lou for signing that noose of a contract.

With Rielly becoming a UFA at the end of the season, the Leafs need to find out what they have in Sandin and Lily. Can they replace Rielly? That means giving Lily a legit chance to play. Min 30 games. I personally believe they can. Then sign a tough D for 4 million in the off season.

Johnsson was a good player, who unfortunately was severely hampered by injuries, the team was then able to move the contract for a gamble of an asset (who unfortunately hasnt worked out yet, but there's still time for him) and cleared cap space as a result.

I don't really see this as something worth lamenting over.

Only thing I would have changed about the whole Andreas Johnsson story arc (with the benefit of hindsight) is package him off to Ottawa in place of Connor Brown as part of the Zaitsev dump when he was still an 'asset.' Kill two birds with one stone.

Ritchie - Mathews - Marner
Bunting - Tavares - Nylander
Mikheyev - Kerfoot - Kase
Simmonds - Kampf - Spezza

Probably how this is gonna shape out is my guess. Kampf will replace Kerfoot as the game progresses more defensive purposes

I agree with this but I’d swap Kampf and Kerfoot.

Kerfoot sucks on the draw, but is good at C. Spezza is better on the RW and one of the top face off men in the league, so he’ll help out there. Also like the Kampf-Kase duo

I’m good with either Brooks/Engvall as the extra forward. Rather lose Engvall personally

You must admit Dubas has a history of letting players walk for nothing and calls them “own rentals”………a total nonsense term

Ever since we got in the playoffs we’ve stopped selling at the deadline. Hell Lou held onto Bozak and JVR, and it’s likely why we make the playoffs the first season Matthews was a rookie.

It’s hardly a Dubas thing.

So we lost Johnsson for nothing then?

Cap space is gold to the boy Wonder.

What a stud of a season he had with NJ. I would have much rather kept Johnsson over getting the cap space. Definitely. For sure.

Broken brains need love too.

Anderson and Johnsson both suck. Anderson is 4 years younger and makes $750k. Johnsson makes $3.4 million.

It was reported at the time that a 2nd round pick was on the table. That should have been taken instead. Anderson doesn't look like he'll ever be more than a potential injury call-up for a short period of time.

Losing him on waivers wouldn't be the end of the world. We can do much better in free agency with $750k.

I think Anderson can still be a very good 4th line player who can play an energy role while chipping in 10 goals. He definitely has some value, especially signed to 2 more years at league min.

I would be pleased if that happens.

With what I've seen of him so far (in both the NHL and AHL), I just don't see it. I hope you're right though.

I'd still take Anderson over a 2nd round pick if I had to do it over (assuming he clears). Anderson has a better chance of turning into a quality player than a 2nd round pick.

He had some injuries, and more so than anything, he was a guy on a team with very few bright spots. He had some ups and downs, like Woll and Brooks did as well, but that is still better than half of the roster last year, which was just bad throughout.

I will also put this out there:
Joey Anderson last year had 7 goals and 11 points in 20 games (or pacing for 21 goals and 33 points in 60 games) as a 23 year old on one of the worst teams in the league.
Zach Hyman had 15 goals and 37 points in 59 games as a 24 year old back in 2015-2016 on an amazing team with Keefe as head coach. Made the NHL at 25.
Blake Coleman had 19 goals and 39 points in 52 games as a 25 year old in 2016-2017 on a fringe playoff team. Made the NHL at 25; full time at 26.

Three very similar players. Anderson is still well on track. I just hope we can give him that extra year in the AHL.

Not a chance. These 3 studs + Andersen are why we finally saw consistent playoffs. Matthews rookie year was actually Nylander putting the team on his back in March.
