i'm a bit surprised at Dermy, tbh.

The top-4 are legit high-end burners though, and if the drop-off comes AFTER dermy than he must just be faster than i thought.
Yeah it was a little surprising to me too .. but as a kid outside McJesus no one else in 97 age group in GTA had his wheels .. he was like a centre playing right defense

Yea, Kivihalme being among the oldest Marlies options and the first cut to hit waivers signals he's probably headed out the door.

Biega/Dahlstrom are vet additions; I wouldnt doubt that one of Sandin/Liljegren are down at a time for most of the year; and then Menell/Kral/Hollowell/Duszak/Rubins will all be vying for playing time, are younger than Kivihalme, and are still in camp. This doesn't even factor in AHL contract options like Hellickson, Kapcheck, Finkelstein, Hoefenmayer, and McCourt

Interesting note from my buddy in sports science at MLSE, 5 fastest Leafs speed times goal line to goal line camp 2021 testing
1. Mik
2. Kerfoot
3. Rielly
4. Willy
5. Dermy
After that team has a pretty big drop off in speed department

Keefe has been playing 1,2, and 4 on the same line.
I guess he wants a fast line too.

3 more preseason games and a week left to make decisions. Seems like a long time compared to the last year. Should give players time to show if they are for real/healthy/or pretenders.

I was wondering if we were going to see this....er....KKK line.....

I’m not sure what to read into Liljegren not being included in this lineup. Feels strange to me given all the other likely depth guys are here

Not being in this half-lineup doesn't mean anything....but yeah that Sandin-Dermott pairing does look like the first choice 3rd pairing.

the only other legit depth option that doesn’t appear to be included is Menell I guess. Maybe they’ll be paired in group 2. Probably doesn’t bode well though for Liljegren.

it’s sad that despite being better than sandin through camp, Liljegren seems destined to return to the Marlies

I only see 4 guys there that are in contention. The other team I think will actually have the more interesting depth options (I think kral/Rubins/menell are ahead of the likes of dahlstrom/Biega).

The other lineup will likely look like:

Rielly - Brodie
Kral - Liljegren
Rubins - Menell
Hellickson - Holowell

Liljegren not being paired with Dermott is his ticket back to the AHL.
Liljegren has done everything he can to make the team, but this team clearly thinks differently. You may as well trade him at this point. If Liljegren wants to have an NHL career, it's going to be on another team as all this team has done is favor Sandin despite him not earning it.
My biggest criticism of Dubas is he favors his own players to an unhealthy degree.

Yea the fact that Dermott hasn't played on the left side at all this camp made me pretty worried that Sandin was going to get the spot over Liljegren regardless of how they played.

Looks like that will be the case anyways.

I understand why Sandin is on the team, but I don't understand why Liljegren wouldn't be. It's annoying to see the Leafs throw every shitty winger they get into the top 6 to give them a chance to succeed, but have a completely different idea of how to handle the defense. Obviously there is more of a learning curve and a bigger chance of it hurting the team if a defenseman can't hack it, but they might want to consider changing their approach. They should be giving Liljegren a chance to learn and develop from Muzzin and show what he can do with a meaningful role

Yeah there was never any competition. Sandin was already penned in over Liljegren as he is their boy.
Lilly's days are numbered here, and it's going to look pretty bad on this management group.

Its unfortunate, I get the offensive upside of Sandin is tantalizing but he's a worse defender than Lily, combined with Dermott being worse as a RD the 3rd pair is going to need to be heavily sheltered.

Instead of a strong defensive 3rd pair with modest offense we're going to run a 3rd pair that's a train wreck defensively to get a PP QB into the lineup.

The Leafs 3rd pairing tends to be pretty sheltered even by 3rd pairing standards and the time is nigh to see what we really have in Sandin. Sandin needs more NHL time to answer this question and if he doesnt hold up, Liljegren is waiting in the wings to get his shot (he's jumping right in to get his shot in case of injury as well).

How do we know that Sandin and Liljregren (both not having to go through waivers), won't be yo'yo'd back and forth all season, replacing one another on that pair with Dermott?
bringing them up and down all season at this stage in their careers isn't exactly good development either. Young defensemen typically need stability and familiarity
