I don't think coaches hate goalies because of PetersonPeterson is why HCs hate goalies, looked like shit a couple games ago, then looked like Vezina material last night.
Who the hell is Furry?
It simply means Torts doesn't care about players who are years away from the NHL. He leaves that to Briere. His focus is on the players he'll be potentially coaching this year, not two or three years from now. Why should he care about Bonk until he goes pro? Bonk's game may be very different in 3 years as he fills out, improves his skating and maybe plays a bigger offensive role in the CHL. Torts will worry about Bonk at 21, fighting for a NHL job.
He is assessing the youthful partnership of Staal and Walker tonightAgain, how does he know who he will be coaching this year? If Don Granato took Tortorella approach, Zach Benson would already be back in the CHL because he is 2-3 years from getting a job. Instead, he's getting a chance to win a job.
If Tortorella is supposedly a coach who gives youth a chance, as you espouse that he is, wouldn't part and parcel of that mean taking an interest in how they play outside of the small sample size that is training camp so that he can accurately assess them?
an 18 year old still has to outplay the 21 or 22 year old youth thats been fighting for a spot for a few camps. our zach benson is in russia, and barkey was just sent back to junior after earning a game but it was clear he wasnt ready so this isnt a great comparison to make. none of our 18 year olds looked better than the other youth and from a coaches perspective the difference between 18 and 22 doesnt mean anything, those are all babies stillAgain, how does he know who he will be coaching this year? for sure i get all that i dont put it on torts as much as I put it on Danny, torts doesnt handle the contracts even if he told us he wanted Brink and Tuomaala both to start the season, but we're still sending rosters that are mostly kids and thats a good sign decisions havent been made yetI'm using Benson as an example - it doesn't have to be an 18 year old. But just for argument's sake, you have to look at the context of the teams and not just the player. Benson is trying to crack a deeper offensive roster that is further along in their rebuild so he has a higher mountain to climb and yet he's there. The Flyers should be trying to bring along youth as part of the rebuild and have done as much as possible to block the route to open jobs for them as possible.
But back to the original point, Tuomaala is 20 and Tortorella knew nothing about him before this camp. Can a 20 year old not earn a job? This shouldn't be about who is older, but about who is a better overall player and it's a damn sight harder to know that when your knowledge of them is limited to a 1-2 weeks of camp. Hell, maybe Tuomaala does earn a job based on this camp and I'd say that is a bad choice as well when you look at the larger sample of his work.
At a bare minimum, this assessment approach certainly doesn't do much to support the claim that deadhead has made that Tortorella highly values youth.

My dude can’t even be bothered to coach a game and then watch the tape after. He instead watches it on TV in the locker room during the games that he doesn’t coach. The team goes out of its way to claim that Tortorella is part of a “triumvirate” with a big say on personnel decisions. He’s more than just a coach — that’s what they say (we could argue he’s less than a coach but I digress). So, yes, it would stand to reason that he would be familiar with more than just the NHL roster. And he would be doing more prep work than training camp.

Can we really expect him to put in any type of effort?
He’s sitting in the press box at least. If you thought he’d coach their first home game, I have news.
Maybe I’m off here but I’d expect my coaching staff to be up to date with every player on the TC roster when camp begins. What else did the coaching staff have to do during the offseason? Is it too much to ask them to look at tape; review exit interviews as well as scouting reports to see what these players can/can’t do? I’m beginning to think that laziness has permeated this organization. Why would Torts know anything about Tuomaala? He played in a Finnish minor league that's below Allsvenskan. I'm sure they're pleasantly surprised by his performance in camp, but no one considers him NHL ready right now?

Brink's a different matter, the question was whether he was able to get back to 100% and improve his skating after the hip surgery last year. No one questions his talent, just his skating.
