I know this maybe an unpopular proposal, but is it possible Nylander could be used in a trade. Not because he's playing bad. He's had a good year, and a good playoff. He would return very good value and Toronto could round out their depth.

The fundamental problem with the Nylander for depth idea is that relatively speaking he doesn't make that much money at an aav of under 7 mil.

If you replace him with a cheaper top 6 talent (say a guy making close to 4.5-5.5 mil) it really doesn't leave you with much to spend elsewhere on depth.

Yes.

Marner at 10.93M though? You can get 2 pretty damned good players

He kills penalties but he could be replaced easily. A leader on the team? He wears the 'A' but I've never seen him as a leader. More like the guys just like him because he's goofy. He puts up points in the regular season

Sure, you can find someone to kill penalties. That's not the point though. The point was, you have all of those things in one player. Matthews and Tavares don't kill penalties on the regular.

I get the criticism for Marner. I truly do. But I guess it's be careful what you wish for.

1. I don’t buy the CJ stuff, I think it is just something to get Leafs fans interested in the next months
2. I do like reading about Kane and Toews coming to the Leafs. Which I don’t think will happen at all.

I don’t see Kane coming to Canada and the Leafs but who knows.
If Kane did move, I could see him reuniting with Panarin in NY, or depending on relationship, joining coach Q in Florida.

If Eichel-for-Marner is possible, Dubas should make it happen. But even with the hints that Eichel may indeed be on the move, I'm still doubtful the Sabres (and the Pegulas) will swallow their pride and trade him here.

They probably won't get a better player than Marner if that's a potential deal.

Hands down no one is trading a top 5 winger like Marner. His value is off the charts with the intangibles he brings on offense and PK. He'll make the Sabres better and Toronto gets the best C depth on paper.

I would have thought Buffalo for a few years with Eichel but with him going, very possible he just stays in Chicago.

Oh, I know/agree. But the thought of Eichel coming here, thousands of fans wearing Eichel emblazoned Leafs sweaters pouring into Buffalo for every Sabres 'home' game, etc... that's not something that will go down easy for them. Hence the doubt about them being able to swallow their pride.

Yes. Nobody is going to offer anything better except possibly the Flyers. Provorov for Eichel, for example.

Honestly, the stars are aligning here. This is the summer for s superstar/superstar trade.

If I hear that the Leafs didn't even consider Eichel/Marner, I will be furious.

Good point. On the other hand, if Mitch goes there, it would kind of even things out. It would also make for an absolutely awesome rivalry.

I think they'll make a significant add mainly because they understand that unless they can change the narrative a bit around the team and reignite some hope, Marner might get the Carlyle treatment from fans in the stands.

As much as I love Marner...Getting a healthy Eichel would be amazing. We dont know about his health though so no chance we make that deal.

I don’t know if going after Eichel isn’t just more if the same issue.

I mean I can’t defend saying we can’t keep having 3 double digit salaries to trade Marner for another.

The point is balance. I would rather a young D like Sergechev/Provorov and a 5 million winger. Then be able to afford a quality 3rd line for 8-10 million. Back when we had Kadri and Kap or Brown. Personally anyway. It’s not always about the biggest names but form, fit and function. Covered at both forward, D and depth.

Do what TB did with Kuch. Use that extra cap while he's on LTIR and sit him out for the year until playoffs haha.
