If Leafs management had better talent evaluation skills, and understood a top pairing Dman has far more value then a small skilled non physical winger they could just have drafted Provorov back in 2015 themselves where Marner went #4 and Provorov #7 to Philly and Zach Werenski #8.

If Leafs director of Amateur Scouting Mark Hunter wasn't also owner of the London Knights, the outcome could have been different.

The best time to get these elite top pairing Dmen is to draft them, as trying to trade for them later becomes far more difficult.

PS. At time of draft I suggested if the Leafs want a Dman take Provorov, and if they want a centre take Barzal, but don't draft Marner as he is not a primary building block player you want to build around particularly come playoff time :wg:

I take Marner all day long over the other guys. Just wish he came with a 9 million cap hit. I knew the day he held out for publicly with his demands starting with Dreger being the puppet master for his Dad, this fan base would never forgive him if they didn’t win a cup. Bad advice. Kid will never spend a fraction of his money if handled correctly.

For similar money who would most fans prefer? Hyman or Konecny? I choose Konecny

Need more size to be honest. He's a fine player but we need some size and someone who will help our PK. I'd endorse Like Glendening and Brock McGinn.

We just need to have more size if this playoffs have taught us anything.
I don't know how effective he is, I've never really cared to look, but Ryan can PK

If you want to help our PK, keep Andersen off of it. Our PK was excellent when he was not in net.

Our problem is that Hyman and Kerfoot are likely gone this year. We should still have Mikheyev and Marner, plus Semyonov joining, but we are going to be adding 3rd liners who should be PKers as well. McGinn would be nice if he comes cheap, but Glendening is not good at anything except winning draws.

I disagree. Glendening is a good penalty killer and strong defensively.

Someone said that CJ may have meant we were in on ekblad. What would that cost? Is he still good especially with all his injuries?

He was very good before the injury and is entering his defensive prime.

Although I don't see why they would trade him. Florida is trending upwards and he's their best defenseman.

Carolina seems ambivalent about keeping Dougie Hamilton as they move into their offseason.

That was speculation on this message board. I'm more inclined to think its someone on Philadelphia since Friedman reported their only untouchable is Joel Farabee and they are coming off a very disappointing season. Provorov, Myers, Konecny, Patrick and even Hart could be persons of interest.

As someone who hasn't watched Garland play very much, what is special about him? He looks to be trending toward a 20-goal, 50-point type of player or is his ceiling higher? I know he was good offensively in the Q. Is he physical? Does he have a good point shot? PKer?

Hasn’t he had concussion problems in the past?
He’s dealt with injury prone criticisms since junior. His lack of production in the post-season actually stems from similar issues that Marner has (lack of straight line speed and shooting ability from distance).

A player of Konecny’s caliber would only be feasible to add if Hyman walks. Otherwise it’s only possible if Rielly’s cap is moved without buying a replacement in FA (terrible idea).

So, unlikely.

I think (myself included) we will regret trading Marner if we do.

I also don’t think the caps gonna be flat for 5 years esp with the ESPN/TNT deal.

If he pulls another playoff no-show next year, they'll have to trade him for the team's good and for his own.

I think after all the emotion and dust settles from the playoff loss this is where I stand. I could see him going this summer, but I think it's unlikely. IMO they have 1 more year with this core before they blow it up and that means trading Marner.

Ambivalence often means the player is asking for a lot.

Of course is they do sign him, won't be till after expansion draft.

Well, they're talking about looking at Tyson Barrie as a replacement... so let the defenseman carousel commence if that means we can get Hamilton and restructure the D. That point shot threat, skating and wingspan could give us a real different look.

Morgan Reilly for Seth jones trade
Sign dougie Hamilton
Move Brodie to left side and if Muzzin has to go then so be it

up front stop with these old guys, if they wanted to be leafs they should Waite till their 40

bring in nick ritchie Sam Bennett and Lawson crouse

if Marner has to go then so be it
Anderson is gone though

I feel like I might never watch hockey again if Montreal makes it to the Cup Final.

I think you move him if you can either attract 2 FAs to come here like Hamilton and Hall for example or if you get an offer you just can't refuse. I see some trade proposals that just look like cap dumps and that'd be a mistake.

Johnton said an American team that's out of playoffs and a player with multiple years left on his deal...Also said it is someone that would excite leafs fans and that we would be keeping the big 4 and Rielly. To me that means it cant be a guy whos too expensive because we wouldn't be able to afford that. And it likely has to be a forward because in this scenario we would be letting Hyman walk to afford this kind of player. I broke it down to Dvorak, Konecny and Meier.
