THEY were already in LTIR then because of the Horton contract. They needed to maximize their ACSL, so they took on Clarkson's to get as close a possible to the cap ceiling before placing the players onn LTIR.

But no matter what, they were using LTIR.

I'll explain it again in easy terms for the unenlightened (not you, the writers).

The Leafs have $9.4 million in cap room. The Leafs acquire Klefbom, the available space goes down to $5.2 million. They get no player. They now have all the same holes to fill.

The end.

I don't agree with it because of the way it would limit our ability to accrue space, but if
-Klefbom were un insured and the Oilers were offering Marleau/Malakhov/Bickell/Ladd compensation
-we knew that we could get within a stone's throw of the cap and use the SOIR mechanism and only lose 20 or 30 grand in cap space

It would be atleast worth considering

Tough spot for leafs fans.....Edmonton gm are idiots for offering hyman 8 years....leafs gm offers hyman 8 years lol

Good player but thank f***. Shouldn't of even offered him 8. Jeez.

If EDM is offering 5x8 and TOR offers 4.5x8, I’d say there’s some comparison to be done

So that make me think it’s 4M or lower on the AAV if we did make an offer.

(Mirtle said on his podcast he heard there wasn’t much talk with Hyman and the Leafs and no real offer)

I read that it was under 4M with their 8 year offer from the Leafs.

8 is only okay if that AAV was really down. Dubas didn't go all out which is good.

With the cap rising later... maybe at 2.5m or 3 over 8 years... but in about 4 or 5 years... you're probably burying the contract or trying to peddle it somewhere.

Sorry just my opinion... I like the player and good for Hyman. .. only guy I hand 8 years to forsure at this moment on their next contract is Matthews.

He’s 29. College took some NHL years off his career, but he made up for it playing like a warrior. He’s not going to play for another 8 years. Thanks Zach but time to move on.

Good point.

Good move on Dubas on the Hyaman front. Good luck in Edmonton.

Now we need to sign 3 LW

Robertson, Mikheyev and Engvall are still signed and are capable LWers, especially the first 2.

We really only need a top 6 LW, a 3rd line center (probably) and a goaltender. Then depth players for competition.

I thought Kerfoot was our 3rd line center

He is mediocre offensively, but he was playing with bum wingers. He is also excellent defensive player and can pk

Under different circumstances I would agree with this. But now is not the time for worrying about picks or prospects who won't have any effect for quite awhile.

The other thing about doing this is that it leaves only one option at the trade deadline.

Dollars in -> dollars out trades at the deadline.

Incredibly hard to make adds of any kind with that restriction.
