THEY were already in LTIR then because of the Horton contract. They needed to maximize their ACSL, so they took on Clarkson's to get as close a possible to the cap ceiling before placing the players onn LTIR.
But no matter what, they were using LTIR.
I'll explain it again in easy terms for the unenlightened (not you, the writers).
The Leafs have $9.4 million in cap room. The Leafs acquire Klefbom, the available space goes down to $5.2 million. They get no player. They now have all the same holes to fill.

I don't agree with it because of the way it would limit our ability to accrue space, but if
-Klefbom were un insured and the Oilers were offering Marleau/Malakhov/Bickell/Ladd compensation
-we knew that we could get within a stone's throw of the cap and use the SOIR mechanism and only lose 20 or 30 grand in cap space
It would be atleast worth considering
