Oilers' potential long-term deal with Zach Hyman not pretty, but necessary - Sportsnet.ca

Hyman spent the day in Edmonton with his wife Alannah on Wednesday, checking out a city that may become home to them and son Theo — who is not yet a year old — should Hyman decide to become McDavid’s left-winger for the rest of his hockey life.

So, what are you going to hate about this deal? The term, that’s what.

In an effort to keep the Annual Average Value as low as possible, Holland is planning to offer Hyman maximum term. That move defines trying to win a Stanley Cup in the nearer future, as the lower AAV will leave Holland more cap space with which to build.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have given the Oilers permission to host Hyman and speak with agent Todd Reynolds. As a free agent suitor, Edmonton can sign Hyman to a maximum seven-year deal, which would come in with an AAV of around $5.5 million.

But if the Leafs — who can not afford to sign Hyman — trade him to Edmonton, then Holland can offer an eight-year deal with an AAV of closer to $5.125 million — exactly the deal signed by Ryan Nugent-Hopkins on June 29.

So you can hate the term, which is truly excessive for a player who turned 29 on June 9. But if you are someone who expects Holland to go for it at every opportunity — someone who is constantly reminded of the wasted seasons of McDavid and Leon Draisaitl — then these are the kinds of things you had better come to accept.

So, why Hyman?

As UFA left wingers go, Hyman is in the Top 3 this summer along with Taylor Hall and Gabriel Landeskog, should the latter get to free agency in Colorado. Landeskog will command a much higher AAV, however, while Hall is happy and set to re-sign in Boston. He and Edmonton are two ships in the night that simply will not pass again.

Hyman, meanwhile, represents exactly what is required on McDavid’s left flank. A right shot left-winger, Hyman has played more than 60 per cent of his NHL minutes next to Toronto superstar (and McDavid friend) Auston Matthews, where he has thrived.

Hyman is a cerebral player who knows what his role is and how to maximize it. His points per game average has gone up in each of the past four seasons, and he was a leading penalty killer and first-unit powerplay player in Toronto.

While McDavid has become as adept at scoring as he is at feeding his wingers, Hyman has made a reputation as a guy who can do whatever is needed as well. The biggest addition to Edmonton’s Top 6 — and to McDavid’s line — is his ability to score down low. Garbage goals, rebounds, tap-ins…

Edmonton lacks that player. McDavid lacks that player.

Local kid, fits well on a skill line, will be cheap, and has the Soo connection. Bunting went undrafted in the OHL twice and was selected by Dubas in the 9th round as an 18 year old when he did well in the GTHL. Worked out pretty well for him and Keefe then, should work well for the Leafs now.

I wanted him years ago, and I brought him up months ago. Seems like a perfect fit for what we want out of our top 6 LW this year.

Galchenyuk would be a perfect fit for the other. He wants to be here, he made some tough choices (going to the AHL, waiting for his opportunity, etc.) to develop properly, he puts his body on the line, and he has skill. There is also still room for him to grow even more and turn into at least a 20 goal scorer again, especially if he is playing with the Big 4 over a full season... And he too will be extremely cheap.

That should leave around 7 mill to add a quality backup, a 3rd liner, and a #7 to the group. And that is without moving Kerfoot or Engvall if we choose to go that route (of course keeping in mind that we'd need to replace them).

If we go into next season with both Bunting and Galchenyuk pencilled into our top-6, that's a bad look. Gamble on one of them? Sure. Both? Our cap situation must be a damn mess....

I am curious to see the reaction if the Leafs somehow manage to get #20 and perhaps a B prospect out of trading Hyman by paying his signing bonus and giving EDM that extra year.

Hall for 6 million...Carle for 4.... pastrnak for 7.... credit to Boston. Meanwhile in Toronto...

I guess one way to look at it is Hall did not want to bet on himself again, as a guy who will be 30 this upcoming year, and while he did have a productive 16 games with Boston, he was under 0.5 PPG for them in the playoffs. Never mind his subpar play in BUF.

He would have a market, but I think he knew teams were not lining up to pay a soon-to-be 30 year old scoring forward coming off of a down year a retirement deal... At least not the type of teams that would be competitive.

On the other hand, if he can sustain his near PPG production with BOS, they are getting a nice deal... If he is getting 6 mill a year.

That's just not going to happen. I'd be happy if our comp is a 4th.

I'd be shocked if the Leafs are paying a dollar of that contract.

Leafs need a top 6 power forward type of player in the worst way. Intrigued to see who they get.

Really hoping Tyler Bertuzzi

That is the going rate for just his rights.

If we are giving them that extra year, and paying any signing bonus he has, we should be receiving an inflated price. IDK if it is #20, but it sure as heck should be more than what his rights alone are worth.

Hyman, bozak, JVR lost for nothing
Brown traded for a cap dump
Johnsson cap dump
13th overall with a cap dump
Broken Foligno for a 1st and 3rd

Next up Rielly?

Think Dubas "went for it" too soon and now has jeopardized the ability to get it done at the right time.

Zach Hyman chats with the Oilers, while the Leafs lose Jared McCann to the expansion Kraken | The Star

Meanwhile, the Star confirmed Hyman was in Edmonton on Wednesday, chatting with Oilers general manager Ken Holland about the possibility of a long-term deal.

Hyman’s preference is to remain a Leaf, but the veteran forward’s asking price — believed to be $5 million (U.S.) a year for eight seasons — might be too much for the cap-strapped club to squeeze in.

The Oilers have the space and need a forward like Hyman on Connor McDavid’s wing. If Hyman agrees to terms with the Oilers, the Leafs can trade his rights to Edmonton before July 28, the date those with expiring contracts become free agents.

It’s believed the Leafs would be interested in draft picks, and maybe the contract of Oilers defenceman Oscar Klefbom, whose career may be over because of an arthritic shoulder. If he was truly unable to play, the Leafs could use his cap hit — $4.167 million for the next two years – to create space by putting him on long-term injured reserve. The Leafs did something similar in recent years with forwards David Clarkson and Nathan Horton.

The news on the Leafs’ front will come in waves over the next few days after the roster freeze thaws at 1 p.m. Thursday. Leafs GM Kyle Dubas will address the media Thursday and is sure to account for his thinking regarding the expansion draft, the two-day entry draft starting Friday (in which Toronto has only three picks) and the Hyman situation.

If they get compensated well, I can see it.

It is not the first time the Leafs have "bought" picks.

This is a team that had to do with this their front office

I highly doubt they're going to be paying a big SB for a guy who isnt going to play here.

That doesn't sound legal, to be honest. Maybe I'm wrong.

They wanted to promote Wickenheiser and hire Goyette. Can't do that with Pellerin and Robidas taking their jobs.

Technically they haven't even restructured player development yet. They dumped two and added two in the exact same positions. One would assume they are paying Wickenheiser and Goyette the same they paid Pellerin and Robidas.

Who knows what the motivation was, but I imagine it has a lot more to do with performance than they are letting on.

This team also added Ryan Hardy in a brand new role without firing anyone, and I know they posted a few other new positions on their Job Board for their front office. It does not really sound like a team strapped for cash.

Friedman said it was financial reasons, so who knows.

Just doubt MLSE is as open to just spending all willy nilly now.

Regardless, isnt happening. Leafs will probably just take 4th rounder or something.
