Losing Kerfoot would have left a #3C hole on the roster, and the free agency crop isn't too appealing.. There was some risk here and the grass may not have been greener on the other side
Just the other day and people are going to roast him If we lost McCain in though expansion lottery Now you’re trying to say it was a wise move holy cow people flop
all over the place on this board

I think it's going to be higher.

At least 8 x 5M cause looking at the reports I think Hyman has had 40M as a minimum in his mind.

Might get a full NTC too.

given what RNH just got; I dont think Holland does that deal in the flat cap world. if he did then it is probably front loaded heavily and structuerd such that it is easily movable or bought out. If hyman wants NMC that cap hit has to come even lower

Klefbom's cap hit is 4.17 million which we could use with him on LTIR. That would be a nice return for losing Hyman.
Those idiot reporters who keep saying those things know less than nothing.

If the Leafs take him on, this is what happens. Their money to spend in UFA goes from $9.4 million to $5.2 million because his cap hit counts against the cap.

Then they have the option of putting him on LTIR to give them up to $9.4 million in cap space, but probably less depending on how close they can come to their ACSL limit.

It is the single worst idea ever.

Hyman has all the leverage since he can easily go to the open market

For the Oilers' sake I hope you are right.

8 x 4M will be a lot easier to stomach cause 8 x 5M or anything in that range is outrageously bad.

if I was Dubas and the oilers want to sign Hyman and need his rights for the 8th year I would try to pry their 1st away. I would see if the Oilers would trade Neal at 50% retained which would be about 2.8 million. They were looking at buying him out so instead of paying four years on his contract they only pay 2.

Neal caught covid right before camp last year and had a rough go. He put up 19 goals the year before that and take away that Calgary fiasco had some solid numbers in Vegas and Pit.

2 years at 2.85 million for a guy who if over covid could play top 6 at worse case 3rd line and light it up on the PP.

Dubas holds out for their 1st or doesn't do it.

Bunting is a really good choice. Hes a hard worker has some untapped skill, and has a great family.

Local kid, fits well on a skill line, will be cheap, and has the Soo connection. Bunting went undrafted in the OHL twice and was selected by Dubas in the 9th round as an 18 year old when he did well in the GTHL. Worked out pretty well for him and Keefe then, should work well for the Leafs now.

I wanted him years ago, and I brought him up months ago. Seems like a perfect fit for what we want out of our top 6 LW this year.

Galchenyuk would be a perfect fit for the other. He wants to be here, he made some tough choices (going to the AHL, waiting for his opportunity, etc.) to develop properly, he puts his body on the line, and he has skill. There is also still room for him to grow even more and turn into at least a 20 goal scorer again, especially if he is playing with the Big 4 over a full season... And he too will be extremely cheap.

That should leave around 7 mill to add a quality backup, a 3rd liner, and a #7 to the group. And that is without moving Kerfoot or Engvall if we choose to go that route (of course keeping in mind that we'd need to replace them).

I don't think that happens unless we are paying out serious signing bonus money in that first year.

Although if we max front load it, pay all of the first year in signing bonuses, we could be talking about some big money...

That could be worth a 1st. We'd effectively buy a 1st round pick.

Rights alone though, we are likely talking about their 4th round pick this year. I'd be fine with that for a guy we were losing anyways.

Just seems like a shit situation outside of McDavid.
Edmonton wouldn't be my ideal spot as a location, but getting to play with the best player in modern history would be a big draw. Plus I'm sure he's going to cash in

Yea. Plus Edmonton's not so bad as a place. These guys are athletes traveling most of the year anyways, and he'll probably spend summers in Toronto.

I really hope he comes here, our fathers are good friends.

Zach Hyman in Edmonton, Oilers talking possible sign-and-trade deal with Leafs -- NHL insiders | Edmonton Journal

UPDATE 8pm: Elliotte Freidman on Sportsnet Central: “Thursday the freeze ends at 1pm Eastern. I think you could potentially see a Zack Hyman deal in Edmonton, and we’ll see if Toronto makes a trade with them so Hyman can get the eighth year and Toronto can get a draft pick out of it. The Maple Leafs are a little short on draft picks.”

Not only the Leafs are short on draft picks. The Buds have just three selections in each of the next two years, but the Oilers aren’t exactly flush with only five in each year. At a guess, the compensation for an early negotiating window with Hyman might be one of the two sixth-rounders Edmonton has on Saturday, either their own at #180 or Pittsburgh Penguins’ at #186 (acquired for the rights to John Marino).

Can’t lie, the prospect of an eighth year for Zack Hyman — who will be 36 by 2028-29 — leaves me cold. So too does the shedding of ever-shrinking draft capital for the privilege. Presumably the objective would be to lower the Annual Average Value, as was done with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins recently.

Should Hyman come to terms on a long-term deal as now expected, he and RNH would project to fill top six spots on the left side for the foreseeable future.
What opportunity that leaves for up-and-comers on the port side like Dylan Holloway, Raphael Lavoie and Tyler Benson is an open question.

Dylan Holloway, Raphael Lavoie and Tyler Benson.... any of them good? At all?
