Seems like the big debate around here is whether or not Holl was worth protection.

The fact that the big argument to the contrary is "well he sucks away from Muzzin" is a moot point considering he will continue to be paired with Muzzin.

However, I do understand that outrage moreso than the ones crying about the loss of McCann when 90% of people clearly have never seen him play.

Just an FYI to everyone involved, McCann isnt some offensively gifted big bodied winger, he is a defensive specialist who took advantage of PP time with Sid. He is actually a worse offensively, better defensively version of Kerfoot who is due for a raise next offseason and would actually be more expensive as early as 2022-2023 than Kerfoot.

I personally would have preferred McCann, mostly as a shakeup, but it definitely isnt some insurmountable loss.

I think he was considering he's our second best RHD and there is literally no one who can replace his spot.

Leafs will have 9.85m at the end of the day to fill,

3 left wingers (maybe two depending if roberston starts on the team)
7th D (maybe none, depending if they decide to put Lilly as 7th dman and swap him with Sandin constantly to get them mins)
1b goalie

Yeah. Still not worth losing McCann for Holl.
man...
I dont even like Holl, and i'd like to see 1/2 our defense traded, but,
Holl has 18 and 19 points the last 2 seasons playing a shutdown role as a dman
McCann had the 2 best seasons of his career at 35 and 32 points with full #1 PP time.

Its a good thing raw point totals arent the only way to evaluate players

I don’t personally love holl. I wanted him upgraded.

maybe that can still happen.

But we lost hallander and a 7th instead of holl. Dermott. Kerfoot.

all of those are worth more in trade

At the end of the day, I dont think its as hard as some think to replace Holl, but I get the appeal because he is cheap and we know already that he does work well with Muzzin.

Oh well. Curious to see how the rest of the offseason plays out.

What is easier to acquire? Middle pairing RD making $2 million for the next 2 seasons in this cap environment, or a middle 6 forward making $3 million who is arbitration eligible and due for a significant raise at season's end?

Nothing at all wrong with protecting Holl, a cheap contract for a decent 3rd pairing guy. I don't get half the posts in here. He was on the 2nd pairing due to available assets to fill, but one upgrade that pushes him to 3rd pair, and injury insurance, makes way more sense. I don't see how anyone can compare say Holl and Kerfoot, one or the other. 2 totally different positions with their own problems in replacing them. Nothing at all wrong with Kerf as a player, decent for what he does and what he makes, and not necessarily "easy to replace with a ufa plug-in". Same with Holl... if anyone can call out another dman making 2 million a year that is better and capable of top 4, please enlighten me.

The Leafs have a guy that could step right in making 1.5 right now.

Who hasn't show a consistent ability to play up the lineup yet. Muzzin missing significant time has given Dermott a lot of opportunity, and had he shown better, the Leafs may have made different decisions.

Alright now that I've calmed myself down...We have way too many defensemen.

Still hoping for a Dermott ++ trade for Bertuzzi.
Sign Jani Hankanpaa?

Was really hoping for Justin Holl to be gone but looks like he's coming back.

The ducks just lost Hayden Fleury to Seattle....I think they would be in the market for a Puck Moving defenseman.

We have a lot of small and soft puck-moving defensemen. Wonder if the Ducks would be interested in either Liljegren or Sandin? Or maybe even dermott?

Idk who we would target, however.

Dermott for Max Jones?

Comtois would be amazing but don't think he's moving.

Correct me if I'm wrong but Max Jones is one of their better young players no?

Yeah, Dermott is a bottom pair guy at best. But the bar isnt very high.

Now is the time to look for trades....Kerfoot was just exposed, so they aren't wedded to him. Plus rumours of Mikheyev and Engvall being available....Kerfoot only has $750k salary this year, and is only owed $3.45 million over the next 2 seasons in real dollars. That will be a very big incentive to cash poor teams in this climate.

I think the bulk of the new players will come from trades, and that UFA will only be players who sign at the last minute with Canadian teams when they run out of US options. Just my feeling that they won't want their families to deal with potential border issues in the fall.
