Oilers fan coming in peace. I wanted to ask about Zach Hyman. How would you guys describe him and his game?
vacuum cleaner ...he sucks in the puck and doesnt give it back (not even to his teammates) ...but, i'm in the minority and dont like Hyman at all (on the top line) he's a great 3rd liner, but, not where we use him.

Liked what I saw of Reilly with the little I saw of him with the Bruins but Oleksiak would be my first choice. Doubt we are moving Morgs but if they could Oleksiak and Reilly should come in cheaper.

At the end of the day we need a more stable lineup. Changing too many players on a yearly basis can't be a good recipe for winning the SC.

The best recipe for the Stanley Cup is having the best team possible.

I like Oleksiak too, but some team will overpay him because "big". Reilly is a guy I think will be undervalued. And in my hypothetical scenario where Morgan is traded, Reilly fills the PMD need.

Probably because they didn’t want to pay him 3.5x3 years when they’re already tied into Bob for 10 sheets annually

And maybe Seattle doesn’t want to pay him what he wants either. There’s no reason to say he’s a shoe-in to sign there… even if it looks like it’s headed in that direction.

Think poor man's Landeskog. Excellent tertiary forward. Arguably the best forechecker in the league with an extremely high compete level. Puck skills aren't great, but they have developed tremendously at the NHL level. He went from a guy who would make unforced turnovers stickhandling, to a guy who could make plays with his back to the net, to a guy who can now make powermoves facing the net. I'm not sure I've ever seen him beat a goalie clean with a wrist shot, but he scores garbage goals well. Solid PK'er, good but not great speed, not much of a playmaker, but can cycle well. Every season he's been better than the last and each season whatever line he played on was our best line. The bad news is he's had a torn ACL and a sprained MCL on the same knee, and it is unclear to what extent he has or will recover. You'll never complain that Hyman isn't working hard, but he'll also never be worth the contract he gets.

I cant tell if you think a career 4th liner making 1/3rd of Marner is a compliment or a criticism

This coming from someone who thinks Marner is overpaid by 1.5 mill and 2 years too short.

When I watched the Lightning, Goodrow was on the 3rd line with Gourde and Coleman. 3.6 is rich for a 2 time SC champ 3rd liner but he is a UFA and if somebody is willing to pay it, that is his market value. Same goes for Hyman. Any non apologist knows #16 is overpaid.

On the main trade board
It looks like the Rangers are going to sign goodrow for
6 yrs @ 3.5 mil
That is crazy

Hyman and Coleman licking there chops .

That's pretty bad for someone who has only scored 6 goals in his 63 games with TB and only 3 goals in his 43 playoff games. If that's true that's not a good sign for the FA market.

They always find random guys to hype. Brandon Tanev received the same sort of contract a few years ago as a similar type of player and the rest of the market was still fairly tame... And that was not in the middle of a pandemic either.

Nah Allen is legit, but it's the loss of Weber that would really hurt them. But Biceps-Bergy is pretty good with trades and I expect them to try for Jones to replace Weber. I think they'll be pretty legit.
Allen is no Price, esp if Price gets on a roll in the playoffs. He is pretty much how Andersen used to bail the Leafs out a few years back except being better and more clutch

jeeze

jeez! I the Leafs to target Goodrow but not at that price! This free agent class is going to be comparable to the Lucic one with how many boat anchors are gonna be signed IMO

I probably give him 3 years max before he starts to fall apart. Plays with too much tact to be productive into his 30s plus produces offense like a 4th liner. They need to target guys like Goodrow in the draft.

If you are sad that David Clarkson didn't accept your offer, and are happy with that Lucic deal, you'll love the Hyman contract.

He's a two-way power-forward with a high motor and bad hands.
Meh bad hands is a bit extreme. I think those have improved from when he was first up. Not saying the contract will be good, that will be awful, and I'm glad we have moved on. Love the guy but at closer to 3-4 million.

Hyman played his best games of the season in the 3 game sweep of the Oilers in Edmonton. Perfect player to play along side McDavid IMO.

If he scored 20 here he will score 30 with McDavid.

That said, he's not worth what he's going to get and the Leafs need to learn to move on from players who don't get the job done. He might get it done in Edmonton, but he didn't here. The end of that contract will be ugly though.

Unfortunately it looks like Dubas is going to once again slow play himself into a corner by holding onto Marner and his almost 11M caphit, who is a much bigger issue than Hyman.

Just wondering. Can teams call Seattle and ask who they plan to pick? Is that what stems a “side deal”?

He has improved quite a bit in the last few years. Every line he played on this year, lines 1-3, he did a good job. He’s relentless on the forecheck, good on the PK, does okay as a net front presence on the PP. When he played on line 3, he was able to drive that line.
I’d be weary of giving him anything more than 4 years, and no more than 4-5 million per, only because injuries may be starting to catch up to him due to his style of play.
We will certainly miss him.

GM's never learn.
The Rangers will be in cap hell .
3 yrs from now they will have to give up a first to get rid of goodrow.
To funny

He's a very useful player. But the biggest problem with his game is wear and tear on his body.

Two years in a row he's looked well below average in the post season beacuse he wasn't 100% healthy. If the Oilers do sign him they will be smart to load manage him,.but coaches seemingly don't like to do that with him

Tbh, the Goodrow deal isn't that much different than the deal we gave to Martin. Lou will probably take on that deal once the Rangers want to move him.

Everybody want player depth throughout the line up, nobody wants to pay for it.
