Agreed they should be able sign a good UFA with Allen's money.

Exactly. Plus there is plenty of goalie options. I couldn't care less about the Habs... it was more about Seattle's crazy ask... but definitely they can turn that money into something good without losing any assets.

For the Leafs I figure it's probably Kerfoot or Dermott gone.

I feel it'll probably be Dermott but I guess it depends on what C Seattle goes for.

I've been seeing blues in a few tweets now as frontrunner. Makes sense.

For the Leafs I don't believe for one second he's coming here. Again unless Dubas has the guts to trade one of the big 4... its slim pickings most likely to round out the forward group.

Those rumoured numbers for that Hyman contract.... Yikes. Why did we get stuck with all the kids that wanted to be paid an insane amount?!?

Its not about how much cap space we have, its how can we allocate it effectively. While we clearly are limited, its still possible to make an effective lineup. Last season we had some cap inefficiencies like Simmonds at 1.8, Kerfoot at 3.5 mill and Andersen at 5 mill. The limitations set by the big 4 arent about inability to fill a roster but rather a tighter margin for error.

Realistically we are coming back with this:

XXXX - Matthews - Marner
XXXX - Tavares - Nylander

Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Holl/Dermott

Campbell

Nothing else is set in stone.

That leaves a minimum of 6 forwards, 2 D and 1 backup goalie with about 21.5 mill to spend.

Now we are all pretty confident that Spezza, Sandin and Robertson are getting 3 of those spots so ~ 19 mill for 4 forwards, 1 D and a backup goalie. Assuming Kerfoot is selected, Dermott rounds out the D and we have 17.5 for the rest. EDIT: Almost forgot about Kessel's 1.2 mill. Remaining cap: 15.3

Forwards:
5.5 mill - Matthews - Marner
Robertson - Tavares - Nylander
1.5 mill - 2 mill - 1.5 mill
1 mill - 1 mill - Spezza
900k sub

Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Holl
Sandin - Dermott
900k sub

Campbell
2 mill

Alternative possibility, Tavares is LTIRd (Kucherov style), David Krejci is signed as a UFA 2C and the Leafs gain about 6-8 mill of cap space.

I think it's funny that if Zach Hyman signs that long term deal with the Oilers as has been speculated by the Athletic (5.8M over 7 years) and if it doesn't work, It could be the very reason McDavid might one day become a Leaf.

So if that happens, thanks in advance Zach!

I'm very curious to see what someone like Saad is going to sign for. Think he could be a good fit on our first line for the money we thought Hyman would've gotten from us.

I would definitely avoid committing to many contracts that extend beyond McDavid's UFA date unless age appropriate and a great player.

Toffoli got 4.25M x4

I would go 4.25-4.75M on Saad

I really don't want to trade good assets for a goaltender with a low supply of picks and work to be done at forward.

I'm comfortable trying next year with Campbell as the #1 with a good FA backup like Raanta or Mrazek. If they stumble they can look to trade at the deadline. They don't need to go all in on a goalie right yet.

I agree.

I think one of the very few ways their top heavy forward group works is to get cheap help elsewhere in the line up and Campbell is one of the best deals in the league. Grabbing someone like Raanta, Mrazek etc at 1.5-2M for a year would be the most I would want to sink into that position.

Doubt a goalie will cost all that much

A) because they never do
B) because the expansion draft making more goalies available than normal

I bet Keumper 50% --> Vegas (ED protection) --> 3rd team happens and will cost a 3rd to Ari and 3rd to Vegas or equivalent in prospects.

Allows Arizona to protect Hill

I'm just hoping after this off-season that the Leafs give the young players a real chance to make the team for next season and not sit out for long periods of time. I'm talking about Sandin, Liljegren, Robertson and potentially other "under the radar" players like Anderson, Hallander, etc. I think they just need to play, sink or swim, and I'm hoping we don't clog the roster with too many veterans again.

With that said, we definitely need at least one big LW addition. This has been our weakness for a very long time. Landeskog fits that bill I think but the price seems rather questionable. Another good addition would be Schwartz if he makes it to UFA, but his recent injuries and average production might be scary with what is likely to be a hefty contract.

Saad is the perfect fit, they want killer instinct...he's got 2 cups and pretty good history of playoff production.
