Yes it absolutely was. Justin Holl, Muzzin, Dermott, Rielly.

Brodie and Bogosian were the only ones from time to time willing to play the body and clear people out in front of the net. And now Bogosian is gone
Muzzin Holl and Rielly aren't at all soft, and Dermott is great defensively he just got turnstilled at a really inconvenient time

Well they clearly didn't play like it in the Montreal series. Soft as butter.

Especially Justin holl. How are you 6'3 and still get constantly ragdolled on the ice. Embarrasing

So the only option was for Keefe to not make any changes games 5-7 when we were flat AF until the 3rd period or final 10 minutes of the 3rd? You could give things a spin for a period or 2 because at that point Matthews/Marner had been trash.

He made a ton of changes in Games 5-7. He just did not touch Hyman-Matthews-Marner, because once again, there were no better options outside of neutering the one line that actually produced something for us.

Holl was extremely bad in that series I whole heartedly agree

Just screams small and soft.

Another 1st rd exit here we come
Lilly is very far from soft, Muzzin big, Brodie solid, Rielly is a gamer and none of the bottom pair shy away from contact

The defense is less of an issue than the forward group when it comes to physicality but it’s still not enough.

Holl’s never been a hard nosed defender by nature. He was always pretty soft with the Marlies but he’s definitely added a bit of snarl. You can still tell it’s not in his nature and when you go deep in the playoffs you can’t have a group who are inconsistent in that regard.

Rielly is somewhat aggressive with his stick work but overall very easy to play against.

I want our forwards to add snarl mostly

Huh? If anything, I thought it could be low.

Mike Reilly is a legitimate top-four defenseman. His underlying numbers the past two seasons have been very good. And he fit in extremely well when moved to Boston at the TDL this year.

I watched every single one of Boston's playoff games (unfortunately I bet too much on them...lol). With McAvoy injured, he was quite visibly their best defenseman. Similar player to Grezlyck, and their underlying profiles this year were very similar.

He's okay-very good depending on the night. Boston plays a good system. I don't think his next contract begins much higher than 3M

He made a ton of changes in Games 5-7. He just did not touch Hyman-Matthews-Marner, because once again, there were no better options outside of neutering the one line that actually produced something for us.

His change was basically putting Foligno at C between Galchenyuk-88 for...reasons.

I think given how little Hyman was doing at LW on that line, other options were worth exploring, we disagree.

We are talking about at most 2 new defensemen in the lineup, and at least one of them will be Liljegren who has already been in the organization for a long time. Sandin should not be here next year, but he will be in the 7/8 slot.

Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Holl/Dermott
UFA - Liljegren
RD UFA

Sandin as the primary LD callup from the AHL. RD UFA can be a guy like Tucker Poolman or Hakanpaa. 3rd pairing UFA can be Nemeth, Suter, Hjalmarsson, Cole, Goligoski, etc.

OR

Rielly - Brodie
Muzzin - Liljegren
Dermott - RD UFA
RD UFA

Sandin as primary LD callup. Poolman or Hakanpaa once again for the 7th position; Hjalmarsson (can play RD), Cole (can play RD), Ceci, Goligoski (can play RD), Hamonic, Savard, Bogosian, etc. for the 3RD spot.

I would not be against moving one of Holl/Dermott regardless of what happens with expansion. It would probably be easier to acclimate Liljegren into the lineup if we do, and I think our defense will still be very strong even with those changes.

Rielly is an interesting one - we can't let him walk after next year, so ideally he's moved now. But given our situation on D.......

Because our D was the reason why we were eliminated in the first round this year and last year..? I take it you don't watch the games? Toronto scored six goals in the last 3 games against MTL, I don't think you are gonna win many games if the scores have to be 2-1.

Our D was the lone bright spot this past season as it was significantly better then years before. I don't know where you get "small and soft D" as the reason why we were eliminated.

I think other options were worth exploring, but none of them were good. You are pretty much throwing darts up against the dart board, which he did (he did more than switch up the 2nd line; he was constantly switching up the bottom 6), except with his top line. He probably knew Marner was not going to get anything done away from Matthews + Tavares and at least the top line was generating opportunities.

No, I take it you don't watch the game's hotshot.

Never said our defense being soft was the sole reason we lost. But it played a huge factor. Sure we didn't score enough goals, but how about the softies we let in in front of our net because we couldn't clear people away from in front of our net or the board battles we lost in the defensive end before giving up our goals? All because we were scared to crosscheck people down to the ice?

Hockey ain't about just goals. This team is too easy too play against.

If you think he'd come in that cheap, that's even better for the Leafs. They reduce their cap liability for very little drop-off in on-ice value, and get a top-four defenseman locked in cheap.

If anything, I think Reilly would benefit more from a possession-oriented team, rather than a forecheck-based system like Boston. He also shoots a lot less than Morgan, which is honestly a benefit when Morgan would just be cannibalizing opportunities from 34/88/91. Both of their transition microdata are pretty similar, with Morgan being a little more dynamic on zone exits (likely because of his elite skating ability).

The benefit of the Rielly trade I proposed is that the Leafs get more cap flexibility this year, cost certainty going forward (vs. a big raise for Rielly), and they replenish their prospect/pick capital.

This team badly needs a Jamie Oleksiak or Josh Mason on the back end
Big mean D men wouldn’t hurt, but you’ll get Sandin and some Barrie 2.0 or god forbid Doug “scared of my own shadow” Hamilton.

I'm just growing tired man. How the hell did we become the softest team on planet earth

Speeds up the change in management, that’s the bright side.

I vividly remember other coaches saying Leafs were tough to play against last year

we were not "the softest team on the planet"

we lost because we couldn't score goals and the guys who we pay stupid money to decided they didn't want to show up to work that week
