This is what people need to realize.

I bet Dubas would sign Hyman if he was willing to take a 1 year sub 1 mill contract

I think he would sign him to Kerfoot's contract.

Problem is that Hyman probably wants over 4 mill and he is simply not worth that. There are a lot of hard working two-way types on the market this year, and I would rather get two or 3 solid but maybe slightly worse two-way guys instead of 1 Hyman.

I will be very surprised if Hyman leafs Toronto. I think he is smart enough to know he will not have the same opportunity in other cities that he has here. In Toronto he plays on the 1st line despite being a 3rd line player. Outside Toronto I think GMs value him as a 3rd liner and not a 1st line player and his contract will reflect this. Especially in a flat cap year.

I can see Dubas giving him $4 million x 4 years or maybe a touch less if term is added. Almost certainly he will want a full NMC as well. In my opinion, for $4 million it is worth paying $500,000 more and having a piece you know works rather than rolling the dice on an unknown that might not fit.

It's not about not wanting Zack anymore because he is too old and run down, the money he is asking for and the type of player he is, doesn't make sense to sign him for that number and term.

If Hyman looked at Toronto and said ill take a 4 year deal at 4m, I am sure Toronto would sign him. Even if Toronto wasn't in a cap crunch and had the money to sign him to lets say 6x6 which is what he's looking to get apparently, you have to walk away from bad contracts and decisions like that. Toronto made that same mistake with Clarkson.
same mistake with Clarkson?

Maybe he wants to win and is tired of being one of the only guys who is willing to fight for this team

same mistake with Clarkson?

As soon as Clarkson put the pen to paper, it was a mistake. Paying 5.25m for 7 years for a power forward looking to cash in during UFA after ONE 30 goal season and the rest were mediocre.

I like Hyman, I was on the Hyman hype train when he was riding shotgun and everyone hated him because he had "no finish" -- But paying him anything more then 4m is a mistake waiting to happen.

I love what Hyman brings to the team, but it's probable his production falls off a cliff if he goes elsewhere. As a Free Agent signing, some team signing him to $5 million +, with term, is going to look terrible pretty quick.

First post in a while.... too much toxicity in this place for now.

He's also had a couple subpar playoff performances in back to back years. His body just gets worn out by the regular season. Not exactly a welcoming sign to invest 5 mil a year in.

I like the guy, and would sign him at the right price. But he's not irreplaceable: getting a guy to ride shotgun to one of the top two lines shouldn't be difficult

Weird how everyone says Hyman is the type of guy you need in the playoffs when he has largely underperformed in the postseason throughout his career.
Hyman's been worth every penny he's been paid thus far. Elitist kids not so much.

That is true, although he was coming back from injury the last two years I believe. Regardless, as someone else said, he plays hard all year, and then when other teams ramp up for, and in the playoffs, his motor doesn't seem to stand out much

Hyman has struggled just as much in the playoffs as anyone else on this roster. 2 of the last 3 years, he has been held to 1 point in 7 games. That is not good given the role he played, even if he was only making 2.25 mill. Considering his main value is from being a hard worker on a skill line, he is not getting praised for working hard either. It's one of the few reasons he will get a nice contract on his next deal rather than a string of one or two year prove-it deals like a lot of other guys with his skill level.

Yup he has struggled in the playoffs for sure. Especially this year. But then Keefe just rolling things out there..... just like the PP

Bruins Sign Brandon Carlo To Six-Year Contract Extension

In another news; Kyle Dubas was found disgusted by this. He think Carlo is worth at least 8M x 6years

hmmm... divisional rivals getting great deals to bolster their roster and have good balance. meanwhile in the Leafs land......

It's a fair contract, but it is hardly a steal. Carlo brings zero offensive value and has stalled in his progression. He should be happy he is receiving a long term deal starting with a 4, because that is already pushing the boundaries of what is fair value for what he provides, especially in this climate.

Mirtle/Siegel seem to think a Kuemper trade (with retention) likely makes the most sense of the available goalies, if Kuemper makes it through expansion. Thinks the cost will be much lower than ARI's ask last season (a 1st), due to the injuries he had, and the fact that he's only got a year left now.

Mirtle said it's believed Rielly will take a cap hit below his market value. Mirtle says based on comps, Rielly's open market is in the 7-7.2M range, but if Rielly is willing to do something in the low 6's, it is very appealing.

you lost me at Mirtle/Siegel

Maybe 25/32 GMs realize Hyman’s a 3rd line player, but you know that there’s at least a couple ready to fall in love with the hard work & grit image he has and will pay 5-6M for it

What is Keefe going to do? Tavares injured. Foligno sucked. Hyman sucked. Marner sucked. Thornton sucked. Simmonds sucked. Mikheyev, Nash, and Engvall were not providing offense. He did not separate the top line, but is not like anyone outside of Spezza and the 2nd line of Galchenyuk-Kerfoot-Nylander should have received a bump in ice time. So when it comes down to trusting a bunch of struggling depth guys who could not even handle a bottom 6 role or a struggling Marner/Hyman, pick your poison. He picked the lesser of two evils. At least they were generating chances.

However at the same time, it is not like Hyman has been a bright spot. If anything, he has been an issue.

Anyone paying Hyman 5-6 mill should be fired. He's not getting more than RNH.

If the Leafs were paying Hyman north of 4 mill, he would have signed with us already. As long as Dubas does not budge from that stance, we will be fine. Let him hit the open market and either take money from a bad team or sit out and come crawling back to us for a cheaper deal later on in UFA.

Galchenyuk-Kerfoot-88
Soup-Engvall-Hyman
Thornton-Spezza-Simmonds
Foligno-Matthews-Marner

(no order)

Just thought maybe getting Hyman to RW on a lesser line could have yielded better results, if you broke up that Kerfoot line for 88/Marner swap...okay.

Foligno if he wasn't healthy...might have made sense to just throw someone like Brooks there for all Hyman was contributing if Foligno was truly unhealthy.
