Florida and Tampa are after the big dogs it seems
Tarasenko is a very physical player. FLorida already a physical team. That's a good mix

Hanifin with Tampa can be deadly.

Depends who the leafs are going after. If they are going after anyone big at all
Most will want that 1st. Then a prospect that's NHL ready or playing in NHL

Again if we are going after someone big. I dont' think we are going after anyone big

Leafs Cap isn't conducive for going after anyone big.

NTC/NMC for any contract greater than 1.5mm.

At least they're top 3rd. in the league, so some value for all that money.

...

Florida has less cap space than us. All of the good teams are strapped except for LTIR-Vegas

Tarasenko has 15 even strength goals thru 57 games.

That's pretty decent and better than I thought he was doing.

There are plenty of 3rd pair defensemen around the league taken all throughout the draft.
There are a grand total of 13 defensemen in the league that:
-are 6'2" 200 lbs or taller/heavier
-were drafted 20th overall or later since 2015
-have played at least half of the games this season for the team that drafted them

Occasionally, big body projects work out. Usually they don't, or they take so long that the drafting team doesn't benefit anyway. The big bodied projects we drafted didn't work out, but it's not for a lack of trying. And in the end, we've still had big bodied 3rd pairing defensemen pretty much every year, so I'm not really sure why it's a big deal.

A 3rd and a 4th for a good middle-six winger with 50% retention?

Jeez, we should trade more with Ottawa, those guys are lost. No wonder the highlight of their season was an empty-net clapper.

We need a defender who can play top 4. Florida just got better. The only way this team gets past 2 rounds is if everything goes their way.

I look at it the other way around. The fact that it took so little to acquire Tarasenko, even with 50% retention, tells me that he was not a valued commodity.

Tarasenko had full NTC and had some control right?

He's a defensive liability but can still shoot the puck and Florida has the defensive forwards to cover his weaknesses. Good pickup for them.

Ottawa fans (yes, I'm as surprised as you are that they still have some) are saying that he's played a very responsible defensive game this year.

Maybe so slow hes always behind the play and it looks like he's back on D?

I havnt watched all that much of him outside of Leafs games TBH but those that track his numbers say he's awful.
