This off-season, if it comes for these defenders, could get extremely ugly.

Trading for under contract defenders might end up being more beneficial.
Skjei and Tanev should be our targets this off season. Tanev should be able to come in below 5 million aav and Skjei will probably fetch between 7-8 million aav. With Klingberg and Brodie off the books, that's 9.15 million which means you need roughly 3 mil more for Skjei.

Rielly-Tanev
Skjei-Liljegren
Benoit-McCabe

Forsling in UFA and Roy in trade are my top two targets. Forsling can log massive minutes the same as Reilly and Roy can really help Reilly on the top pair. Forsling could easily carry MCcabe or Liljegren on the 2nd pair and if we need to move either, Forsling would be a great partner for Niemela eventually.

I'd be interested in getting Adam Henrique in maybe a 3 team deal and moving on from Bertuzzi, who's been a MAJOR disappointment both on a production level as well as a physical/pest level.

To Toronto - Henrique
To St. Louis - Bertuzzi
To Anaheim - St. Louis 1st rounder

St. Louis is just an example, could be any wild card playoff bubble team.

Then we can put Domi with Tavares and Marner and have a true 3rd line that has speed and kills penalties.

Knies - Matthews - Marner
Domi - Tavares - Nylander
Robertson - Henrique - Jarnkrok
Holmberg - Kampf - Gregor/McMann

Why is someone trading a 1st for a major disappointment?

Which top pairing defenders are potentially available? Colton Parayko has a ling contract, so he’s apparently not an option. Ivan Provorov isn’t woke enough, so he’s off the table too. Anyone else? Adam Larsson is borderline #2 and he fits well, but he may or may not be available. Connor Murphy isn’t a real top pairing guy.

Perhaps one acquisition from each route? Having to trade for more than one defenceman could get ugly in its own right (in terms of parting with valuable and inexpensive assets).

A lot of proposals with Bertuzzi in them, but he has a no movement clause. He’s not going anywhere this season, he’s with us for the playoff run this year

I think he'd potentially wave to a team he'd get better usage, particularly time on the 1st unit pp. He's on a contract hear and hasn't exactly had great prediction so far

That said I also don't mind just keeping him for the playoffs

While the Ottawa Senators have genuine interest in the 34-year-old Tanev with the deadline set for March 8 at 3 p.m., league sources say as many as 10 teams have reached out to Calgary Flames general manager Craig Conroy, including the Toronto Maple Leafs.

There aren’t many right-shot defencemen on the market, and that’s why several teams covet Tanev. The Los Angeles Kings and Vancouver Canucks are also looking for help on the back end, and talk is they’ve dipped their toe into the water on the cagey veteran as well.

Tanev, an unrestricted free agent on July 1 who is making $4.5 million U.S. this season, has been on the market all season and the only other top-end, right-shot defenceman available is Brett Pesce of the Carolina Hurricanes.

By all accounts, Tanev is a great pro, a leader in the Calgary room, and he has been able to carve out a 14-year career because he’s strong defensively and he makes the simple plays to get the job done.

Would Tanev be a fit for the Senators and help to take some of the pressure off the young players? Of course he would.

But Tanev’s a coveted player at this year’s deadline with a 10-team no trade list. It’s not known if the Senators are on that list, but if Ottawa wants to acquire him, then the club would have to sign him to an extension.

League executives say the asking price for Tanev is at least a first-round pick, plus a prospect. We’re led to believe Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving, who signed Tanev while with the Flames, had made him the club’s No. 1 target and will pay a higher price in a trade.

“Treliving loves the player,” a league executive said Tuesday.

I sure hope we don’t overpay for Tanev… If Tre really wants him, wait till the off-season when you can just sign him.

If we trade for a defenceman, Andersson would be my top pick but I doubt Calgary is looking to move him. My second option would be Parayko.

I’d definitely overpay for Andersson though. 1st, Niemela and Minten.

I hope the market for Tanev is driven up substantially, he’s a good D man, but his hi of injury cannot be ignored, big pass imo…….

The Leafs probably shouldn't trade a 1st unless they're looking unstoppable at the deadline. Nylander and Matthews are flying, if you could support them you never know. But, they could probably fill the hole with a band aid solution like Lyubushkin for a 3rd, save the 1st and sign Tanev in the off-season. They should be smart with the assets they have, Tanev isn't as important as ROR and McCabe was with his contract and moving those two 1sts makes keeping this one more important.

Styles has fallen off since signing his inflated contract, I doubt he continues to put in the effort that got him that contract……….

Any top pairing defender on the UFA market will cost at least Rielly's cap.

Someone already under contract might leave some space for depth signings.

But if they can find one 1st. pairing defender, they could back-fill with lessor defenders and play the poop out of their top 2.

Ya I don't think the Leafs would ever sell. Especially since the Metro is brutal this year, so the Leafs could probably make it playing .500 hockey the rest of the way. As long as nothing important goes out for a quick bandaid fix....

Also funny how things worked for Tampa. They were 7 points out when they started to sell off and then went on a heater and ended up missing the playoffs by 1 point behind the Leafs.

They transitioned well from a team in 2011 that made the conference finals with players from the 90s, to a Cup in 2020 with players who wouldn't remember the 90s. All with 2 constants, Stamkos and Hedman. Amazing what good drafting and development can do. Hopefully the Leafs have found enough gems the last couple year to be able to support the core and a 2nd window in this era.

The 1st, if they're thinking about moving it , could make more sense at the draft than the tdl.

A better chance to pickup a guy with a couple years of term
At the draft you can trade back in the first rd pick up an extra pick.
It's dumb to trade a first at the deadline.

Just a consideration - replacing Domi and Bert with 1M players gets us whole up front on the Matty and Willy raises.

The ~4M cap increase plus Brodie 5M would give us the space to resign Lily and Benoit and one top UFA D target, if we go that route. But that means our fifth highest paid forward is Kampf.

If we strip the roster down to 20 players we have an extra few milly, but things are pretty tight next year for some of these shopping lists.

Picking up one top D and one middle class player for the future, while losing a lot in the process, is probably the best we can do until the following year.

To put it bluntly, I will be surprised if the Leafs don't give up a first round pick for Tanev. Ottawa certainly won't trade its first round pick.
