Yup just saw everyone on the Leafs cleared. Good news. Nice to have an extra half decent goalie around for once.

Johnston - Kampf - Reaves?

Would never happen (probably for the best) but:

Bertuzzi - Matthews - Marner
Domi - Tavares - Nylander
Knies - Minten - Jarnkrok
Johnson - Kampf - Reaves

Would be incredibly entertaining. similar to having the McLaren & Orr 4th line with a real team.

If you had a choice between signing Ryan Reaves or claiming Ross Johnston off of waivers, which one would you choose?

But you cant just bury him. If you chose to select him on waivers he must be on your NHL roster or waived again.

Yes - but in this scenario, Reaves was never signed.

Treliving wanted size / snarl on the roster...you could claim but you could get so far into the season and waive him yourself to bury him...usually once the real hockey begins, Johnston / Reaves play less or not at all.

So you go into the training camp hoping somebody else gets waived, makes it through to our waiver position and then know that youre gonna have to waive him again anyways and hope that nobody takes him again?

Doesn't sound like a very solid plan to me.

It's more along the lines of, you want the element on your roster but it's also the first thing you likely dump towards the end of the season if you need the cap space to bolster centre or defense.

Probably a poor / pointless hypothetical anyway, we're here now lol.

Surprised no one picked up Jones off waivers. Glad we can keep him around for some extra insurance policy given Samsonov and Woll’s health records.

Classic top of your prime contracts from the Jets… not terrible overpays IMO but the type of contracts that likely start to age poorly in 3 years.

Seemed like at least 1.5M too much but I understand because of pending UFA + lack of city appeal they had to pay up.

I don't get why the Jets didnt go 8 year term for their two UFAs?

Its the biggest advantage that teams have and they didnt use.

Could have gotten both at 8m x 8

Its 1M total savings between the two

If your fine with 38 Schiefele/Helleybuck on your team then I don't see any worries with 39 year old them as well

Was kind of hoping the Kings would pick up Clifford. @KingsHockey24 deserves it!

Happy to have you around here still, brother.
I really thought I manifested hard enough this time.

Does this contract impact the William Nylander negotiations?

Over the last three seasons, Scheifele has put up 201 points in 203 games. Nylander has 209 points in 214 games.

He's also 3+ years older. Scheifele's contract is a retirement contract until he's 38.

That’s a factor to consider, but do you think that means this contract doesn’t diminish Nylander’s strength asking for 10? A comparable player just signed for much less… again…

Nylander signing an 8 year deal takes him to 36.

Option 3: sign Nathan Bastian as a UFA this summer for the same cap hit as Reaves.
Option 4: put a waiver claim on Wade Allison.
Option 5: put a waiver claim on A.J. Greer.

All three of those players are better hockey players than Reaves today and provide a physical presence.

Scheifele plays a more premium position and Winnipeg isn't nearly as appealing as Toronto.

I haven't watched Allison play (but there was some hype about him over the last few days while he was on waivers).

At this point in time, I would probably prefer Greer over Reaves (in terms of play and AAV) but I guess we will have to wait and see what Reaves brings. He brought a lot of energy to Minnesota last season. Hoping he does the same here.
