Tbay/Jets have the depth to cover a hurt top 2 C

If the Jets don't make a major move, or two on their back end all the C depth in the world can't carry them through the playoffs.

What's my point? Outside of Tampa Bay, there is no "complete" squad that I see out there and I don't see any easy fix given who is available and what Toronto's cap situation looks like, to add a top end 3C that could seamlessly play 3C if Matthews or Tavares get hurt. I'm not disagreeing with you that it's a potential weakness post Kadri. I'd simply offer that almost every team has flaws in this flat cap era and it's really hard for many teams to fix their issues / potential issues.

Hall scores pretty much anywhere outside of that armpit organization he's in right now. With Marner and/or Matthews, he's back on a 25+ goal pace at the very least.

He's a first line winger, no question there.

Is he the kind of winger we need to make the top-6 better? I really don't think so. Add him to the mix and I think it just exacerbates the current issue of those lines being less than the sum of their parts.

Here is how I see the Deadline for us.

Top Candidates:

Hall
Granlund
C. Brown

Unlikely, but sought after/rumors:

Ekholm
Forsberg
Jenner
Wood

Ideal but no rumors/my own preference:

Getzlaf
Pavelski
Hamilton
Monahan

Monahan is an interesting name. Would require considerable retention from Calgary even if we added Kerfoot. He's a GTA guy so he'd probably waive to come here. I'd definitely be willing to move picks and prospects to get him. We'd be stacked at center but it would complicate the expansion draft.

To Toronto: Jeff Carter (50% retained) + Alex Iaffalo (50% retained)
To Los Angeles: Alex Kerfoot + Pierre Engvall, 3rd Round Draft Pick

Iaffalo - Matthews - Marner
Nylander - Tavares - Simmonds
Hyman - Carter - Mikheyev
Thornton - Spezza - Galchenyuk

Johnston: “I think the Leafs want someone with a bit of edge” (SN590)

On the Leafs Nation post-game show after the Leafs‘ OT win over Ottawa, Chris Johnston provided his latest insights on why the trade market hasn’t kicked off yet and what needs the Leafs are prioritizing before April 12.

Columbus has won some games in the last few weeks. I think it has changed some of what they might do. Nashville is a little less incentivized to sell, although they still have to stay ahead of Dallas and Dallas has lots of games in hand.

My sense of the trade market:

1) The prices are high. That is one reason a trade hasn’t happened.

2) Some of the teams that have rental-type players who might move before the deadline have started winning games.

3) There are situations like in New Jersey with Kyle Palmieri, who I think the Leafs would very much covet, where I think there is very much an effort to try to get him extended. It is possible if not likely that he is going to sign a new contract in New Jersey rather than be traded.

There are a lot of dynamics at play. I am a little more bullish than some of my colleagues. I do think we are going to see a lot of movement up to April 12th. I do think the Leafs are going to make good on Kyle Dubas’ promises or comments and they are going to get into the action here as soon as it gets started.

On what the Leafs most want to add by the deadline:

I think they want a guy with a bit of edge. I think Palmieri or Nick Foligno — those are the guys they would actually prioritize. I just don’t know if those players will be traded. I think the Leafs recognize that the games are going to be hard in the playoffs. They are going to need someone to push through. Even though they have added Simmonds, Bogosian, and some of those guys, I think they want to get a little tougher to play against.

In what world does this happen? They wouldn't accept that for Iafollo alone, nevermind with 50% retention and Carter.

Unless we trade Kerfoot, who I assume nobody really wants, are we not limited to your usual depth deadline day trades that we hated previous regime's for?

Carter a few years might have been a nice addition, but we already have two former all-star centers, not sure what the point of another would be.

Johnston says the Leafs are looking for Players with an Edge. Thank god. I don't want Taylor Hall on this team.

Hoping Dubas comes out of left field with a Miles Wood type of Acquisiton

Namestnikov is currently playing 2nd line C for the Red-Wings. Wouldn't be a bad fall-back target. He's got some feistiness/edge to him
