Think conditional pick(s) may be key here

I'd like to see the Leafs pull off something like this for Hall:

Toronto:
Hall @2.24m (72% retained: 4m by Buffalo; 1.76m by Chicago)

Buffalo:
* Conditional 2nd round pick 2022 (TOR) *Becomes 1st round pick 2021 (TOR) if Leafs win Stanley Cup.
* Conditional 3rd round pick 2022 (TOR) *Becomes 2nd round pick 2021 (TOR) if either A) the Leafs make the Stanley Cup Finals with Hall playing at least 50% of the games, or B) Leafs make the 3rd round with Hall finishing top 4 in either of Leafs goals or points scored.

Chicago:
3rd round pick

I was preaching earlier this month how Eric Staal would of been a good fit for us to play 3c and use him as depth up and down the lineup... Because he was cheap option and wouldn't hinder any extra moves......

.... Habs got him for a f***in 3rd and a 5th... How do we not beat that offer? That's peanuts for play off depth/experience.

Hope that move doesn't come back and bite us.. I think he could of made our line up more lethal and versatile.. and again, cheap enough that it wouldn't stop us from making any other deals... And no matter how far he is away from his prime.... He's Eric f***in Staal.. going on a cup run.. we would have seen an extra gear coming out of him the same way spezza is shining right now.

Habs had cap space. We don't. Pretty cut and dry.

isn’t there a rule where only 50% of a contract total (no matter how many teams split) can be retained? I think hall can only get brought down to a 4 million hit

Not exactly, I used to think this as well. A team can retain no more than 50% of a player's cap hit & player's cap hit can be retained a maximum of 2 times (by seperate teams; Toronto could not retain on Phil Kessel again, but a different team could).

Check out the Lehner deal for instance, his initial cap hit was 5m but was brought down to 1.4m. Robin Lehner Trades - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps

So I've just kinda skimmed through these 11 pages to catch up. By the looks of it all we need to compete is

A top line LW, pushing Simmonds to the 4th

A 2nd line LW, pushing Galchenyuk to the 13th F

A backup 2C in case of injury (playing 3C)

2 Hyman clones

Upgrade on Dermott but keeping him as a 7th D in case of injury

A goalie to platoon with Campbell

Magically shed Kerfoot and Andersen salaries

Did I miss anything?

I am going to post general predictions about the up-coming trade deadline.

I do believe there will be significant moves, but my takes seem to be very different then most.

1. The key to unlocking salary cap comes from moving Andersen NOT Kerfoot.

As you know, Andy has not played well and is UFA. They key to moving his real dollars. His cap is 5 million, but in real cash is only owed approx 400k - which is attractive to budget teams. Essentially they can move the same cap dollars back to us, but save REAL dollars to their bottom line.

This is why moving Kerfoot is harder. He has term and high real dollars remaining. If the Leafs want to move Kerfoot - I predict it’s after his next bonus paid in the summer.

2. Andersen is either LTIR or moved in a multi player deal. With a goalie coming back to Toronto.

3. Toronto acquires a legit top 6 LW.

4. Toronto acquires a 3rd or 4th line centre

5. Toronto acquires a dman

6. It will either be a high end LW with depth D or Strong D man with a Granlund type LW.

As a final haul, I’m guessing
Hall, 50% Retention + Chicago retention

This is... something. Sounds like they are preparing some form of LTIR for the season to me.

Unless his injury becomes a lot worse than expected or suddenly worsens, it does not seem to me they could LTIR him for 7+ weeks, at least not without breaking any rules. 7-10+ days is a very different timeline than 7+ weeks.

If he does though that opens up a lot of opportunity to add ahead of the deadline.

As a UFA it may be in his best interests to rest his injuries.

I stand by my prediction he’s traded or LTIR’ed. He won’t play again this year for the Leafs.

I agree Freddy may go on LTIR. this will be a courtesy for his future contract as it won’t show leafs don’t want him anymore and can blame injury, still stays with team as he’s friends with most including Matthews and will not disrupt dressing room and he’s extra insurance for the playoffs.
Either way another goalie is coming in.

To Toronto:
D Mattias Ekholm - 50% retained by NSH
W Mikael Granlund - 50% retained by CHI
G Jusse Saros

To Nashville:
D Timothy Liljegren
C Semyon Der-Arguchintsev
G Joseph Woll
2021 1st Round Pick
2022 2nd Round Pick

To Chicago:
2021 4th/5th Round Pick

With Freddy on LTIR, and a roster of the below, Leafs would still have 1.85M in cap space, to carry extra skaters (or perhaps lower the retention on Granlund to reduce the pick we give Chicago)

Simmonds - Matthews - Marner
Granlund - Tavares - Nylander
Mikheyev - Engvall - Hyman
Thornton - Kerfoot - Spezza

Muzzin - Ekholm/Holl
Rielly - Brodie
Dermott - Holl/Ekholm
Bogosian

i dont think thats enough for all 3. 1st+Liljegren + Ekholm and 2nd+SDA = Granlund but not enough value for Saros. i would pay the price though. Saros would be a great goalie target

I'd be shocked if he missed the rest of the regular season, but the wording on Keefe made it feel like it could very well happen after reassessing.

If Kucherov can take 9+ weeks to skate and rehabilitate, I think the Leafs can probably spin a lower body injury in that fashion.

Why would Nashville trade Saros when Rinne is very likely done or at least very close to retirement? Seems unlikely?
