show me how that 8 million dollar cap hit fits
50% brings it down to $4m?
we have $500k space atm
we have 500k right now
3.5m + 500k covers it
geezus,,,,, we know this
just like losing Kerf does not clear us 3.5m cap space.
This should clear up the confusion.
43 days/116 days remaining in the season means that the leafs on this day can add cap hit equivalent to: their cap space x (116/43), because contract are pro-rated.
Cap space can be added to this amount by demoting some players simultaneously to a trade, as long as they still have a 20-man roster as a result.
Today Leafs have $282,805 in cap space with a 21-man roster (not including Hutchinson as he is an emergency exemption call-up with no effect on the cap).
If they were to trade for 1 player they may simultaneously send down 2 players (Hollowell & Sabourin);
this would create an additional (($799,766 x (43/116)) + ($700,000 x (43/116))) $555,946 cap space to the $282,805 they currently have = $838,751.
This $838,751 cap space could take on a max cap hit of ($838,751 x (116/43))
$2,262,677.12 today.
If a deal were to happen for Hall today, he could be retained 50% by Buffalo and another 44% by a third party team, bringing his cap hit to $2,240,000 which pro-rated is = $830,344.83.
The closer the Leafs wait to the TDL the higher that number can become.
The maximum a team can retain is 50%. Hall's AAV is 8 million. We are up against the cap.
It's impossible unless we move out 4 million in salary or a 3rd team is involved in the trade to take on salary.
Correct, but a player's contract may be retained twice (by different teams); so a third party team can bring the cap hit down to 2m.
Problem is more retention means more cost
Definetly, don't think it'll be too bad though for a third party team to retain 2m at the point in the season, probably costs a 3rd at most.
Do we have the space to add Hall @50%?
No but we have enough to get him retained twice to 2m or a little more.
